Merry Christmas ….say it!

  • BuckeyeBlue
So you're saying that being tolerant of others and their beliefs is in contrast to the spirit of the holiday? I don't get it.

If I know someone's religion, I will greet them accordingly during this time of the year. I don't feel bad about it at all either.

Kwanza isn't a real holiday. Some guy made it up in 1966. HE said that Kwanza "was meant to be an alternative to Christmas, that "Jesus was psychotic", and that Christianity was a white religion that blacks should shun." Umm ok? Don't worry, in 1997 he changed it and said it was OK to be Christian. Sorry, that holiday just pisses me off.

anyone kind of disturbed about how this country went from being really conservative when it was begun to getting really open and now going back to getting real conservative when you can't say Merry Christmas because its not PC and offends people?
  • Upper90
Who and where are these people that it's offending? I mean, seriously. I'm sure there's about the same amount of nutjobs that are offended by someone saying "Merry Christmas" as the OTHER nutjobs that are offended that they feel like they CAN'T say "Merry Christmas".

I have never once, at any point in my life, seen someone get offended by the greeting "Merry Christmas". I don't celebrate Christmas, but if someone wishes me a merry Christmas, I'll wish them one right back. I've been around Muslims, Jews, people that don't give a shit either way....when they get wished a Merry Christmas, they're not shocked, offended, or upset. They nod, smile, and go on with their lives, because it's not that big of a deal.

The people offended are the people that think that there's some kind of war on their holiday, when that's not the case. The case is, not everyone celebrates it, and businesses/etc. have the NERVE to attempt to cater to all. It's not really difficult to ignore, but when you get mindsets of blatant ignorance/bigotry, such a Belly's....then you're not helping any cause, in any form.

I wouldn't consider someone being offended by the words 'Merry Christmas' a trait of the conservative movement. I also wouldn't consider Political Correctness a trait of conservatives as many take any available time to shun PC when they can.

This isn't about being PC, though. This is about being polite and respectful of those that celebrate a Holiday that you don't. I guess I'm just not seeing how saying Happy Holidays on the 1st night of Hanukkah is considered 'dissing' Christmas?

I'll always say Merry Christmas but I won't act like a douche bag like the creator of the thread if someone says something else.

    Happy Holidays to everyone!

I say both. Its not that I'm not worried about offending anyone I've always said both. But OP if your a Christian you need to pick up your Bible and read it because you really have no idea what your talking about.

I am a Christian, and I celebrate Christmas for Christ's birth. I really don't care what anyone else chooses to celebrate. It is a FREE country.

Belly... you give Christians a bad name with thinking like that. Sad thing is, you are not the only one out there with those same idiotic thought processes.

I say Happy Holidays to cover all base between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Without getting too political, the country is not as homogeneous as before. Christmas dominates, but it is not the only holiday out there. I celebrate Christmas, but mainly for the family and traditional value, not religious. But, that is just me.

“No human beings, black, yellow or white, could be quite as untruthful, as insincere, as arrogant — in short, as untrustworthy in every way — as the Russians,”-Teddy Roosevelt

Hey, that's why Hitler hated the Russians..........just a thought.

And a very merry Christmas to all.

Why is it that Christmas or Christ was an ordinary word for a couple thousand of years, but now all of a sudden (the past 5 years) people try not to say it, quote quote "it might offend someone's religion". I didnt know our country just started allowing people from other countries to come over here. There have always been different ethniticities and beliefs and it never hurt peoples feelings before. If you dont like the word Christmas, then quit decorating and buying presents to impress family members. There wouldnt be this joyous time of the year if it wasnt for Christs' birth. And to the one who started this topic, I like some of your points, but other things were pretty stupid.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to every person, race, color, religion on this site.............Im sure that didnt make somone cry, or did it?

As a Pastafarian, I will and do say Happy Holiday, but I don't take offense to those who celebrate otherwise.

This is the post on this thread I most agree with. Depending on your beliefs, you can say "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas" to anyone who says either to you. But when you start complaining about another person's right to give their particular seasonal greeting, you're simply showing your lack of tolerance to other viewpoints.

I don't care if you wish me a Merry Christmas or Happy Holiday, Kwanzaa, whatever --- I care that you're wishing me a HAPPY something.

Lots of things change in culture over time. Words that are considered "vulgar" change each generation. People still throw the term "gay" around as an insult, but within a generation that is probably going to change. Just because people are becoming less closed minded doesn't mean they're becoming pussies.

Things change. It just happened to take until 2005 for people to realize that maybe we should actually recognize that there are people other than Christians out there, and if you are in a position that reaches out to a huge number of people (namely large business and government, where we see this being the largest issue) it is simply easier, more effective, and SMARTER BUSINESS to use a blanket term for the masses.

Personally, you can say whatever you wish, but don't be a dick about it. If someone tells you Happy Holidays, don't "correct" them like an asshole, because they said nothing wrong for you to be "righting"; last time I checked, Christmas is in fact a holiday encapsulated in said term. For all you know they aren't Christian either. If you say "Merry Christmas" to someone and they politely explain to you they don't celebrate it, ask them what, if anything they do celebrate and wish them a happy whatever, and go on with your day.

The only problem I have with people saying happy holidays, is everyone is so careful not to offend anyone, yet no one seems to care that it might offend some people if you don't say Merry Christmas. I just shrug it off and say Merry Christmas back though. :)
