Asking father for daughters hand in marriage?
-
KR1245What do you guys think about this? Did you do it? Would/will you do it? I plan on getting engaged this summer and just curious to see what you guys think.
-
j_crazyI did. But When it comes to things like this, I'm old fashioned. One of the most nervous times in my life.
-
Fab1bNegative it isn't up to him or anyone else but you and her!! I don't live in 1950!
-
Glory Dayshaha so what happens if the father says "no"? do people still do it?
-
I Wear PantsDepends on the daughters relationship with her dad and your relationship with the dude.
-
LJI am gonna have to do this hre in a few months.... FML
-
THE4RINGZI suppose it is the proper thing to do. I didn't do it however
Kind of an awkward conversation. "I've been fucking your daughter for a couple of years now and want to make it legit. You down with that ?" -
captain_obviousDid it, but my wife was 21 and the first of 3 daughters to be engaged. It was important to her and to him. It was funny since it was the 3rd time I tried. The first 2 times were foiled by my wife ruining it.
-
UA5straightin2008i plan on doing it
-
Fab1bI didn't the first time and I won't the next time!! I had/have (engaged now) good relationships with both dads however I just don't believe in that. She is a grown woman he has no say, like someone above asked what if he says no??
-
KR1245Good question. I'm not sure what I would do if he said no. I've got a pretty good relationship with the guy, maybe I'll take him a bottle of liquor or some cigars to help my cause
-
LJI am pretty nervous about asking my gf's dad. I think he likes me, but he is a biker who's nickname was "Mountain" and he is best known around his area for beating the shit out of a cop back in the 70's.
-
WebsurfinbirdMy fiance asked my father, which he appreciated. But when my mom found out, she was upset he didn't ask her too!

Agreed. Unless she's underage, parents have absolutely no say.Fab1b wrote: Negative it isn't up to him or anyone else but you and her!! I don't live in 1950! -
LJMy sister got engaged at the age of 28 and when someone asked my dad if my brother in law asked him first he said "hell no, she's 28, I was about to ask him if he would marry her for me" LOL

THE4RINGZMy wife's father is an Italian "business owner". I figured if he didn't like the idea I would have gotten a message before the wedding.
-
Fab4RunnerI wouldn't care either way. I have a good relationship with my dad and stepdad but it isn't really important to any of us. I'd he'd like to let my family know his plans fine. If not...also fine. I just hope if he does that they can keep their mouths shut. I want it to be a total surprise.

"he's such a lucky man, which is exactly what I told him when we talked last week" -

I agree. I've always thought that if the girl has a decent relationship with her father, then yes you should ask. It's also depends on their age. If she's like 35-40 years old then there probably no need to ask lol.
But I would really appreciate if my (future) daughters boyfriend would respect my family enough to have my blessings. -
Gblocki did it but it was set up by the wife....it was a must tho. no getting around it. it only lasted like 4 minutes.

And there is a good chance the girl's father grew up in the 50's, at least part of it.tk421 wrote:
