Only the top five score in XC.

Please don't take this as any sort of shot, jab or being a smart ass reply. Pointing something out which you may not have ever considered.

Wrestling has weight classes. Lets say you're an above average wrestler. Most likely if you're not thee alpha and get to choose your selective best weight you still have options. Many go up a weight class or three, a few tough it out and go down to make varsity.
My post isn't taking anything away from wrestling but only trying to compare the two sports. Since in XC only the top five score some large schools you'll see damn good runners who can't even make varsity.

No weight classes in distance running.

that's not my point. My point is CC #'s are a bit skewed since anyone who wants to join the team can join the team (as long as they are eligible). In sports like soccer, there are only a certain amount of roster spots, thus their "participant" numbers are not as high as sports that allow anyone to join.

Why are we now comparing wrestling to long distance running?

Just offering a response to your "everyone is part of the CC team" comment above.

How many HS sports actually cut athletes?

I guess those other sports like soccer with only a certain amount of roster spots, the "bench warmers" quit more often than those who try cross country.

Theirs actually fewer varsity roster spots available in cross country than any other sport. Just pointing out (if anyone was unaware) only the top five runners score in XC.
  • Tiernan
How come whenever somebody says "soccer sucks" (me for instance...) all the soccer dweebs wanna start comparing it to other sports by saying its better than hockey, running, swimming...etc? Can't soccer just suck on its own?
  • TedSheckler
    Nice LOLFAIL. Butthurt, lulz.

Because as a soccer fans, we are called to defend its honor to the death. Comparing the greatest sport, soccer, to everything else is just the easiest argument we can make.

But no one is talking about how many are varsity/how many score. It's about how many can be on a team. You can be outside the top 7 (and "only top 5 score" is inaccurate, as the sixth runner is used as the tiebreaker for team placement, if necessary) and still be able to compete in every meet until sectionals, due to JV/open races at invitationals, where you can run in, regardless of how many runners your school has that aren't varsity (one guy in the open race or 20).

With other sports, though, when numbers get high enough, cuts get made. Some sports let anyone stick on the team all year as long as they're a warm body and willing to put in work -- others require a person to be good enough to be in the top whatever if they want any spot, whether it be varsity, JV or whatever.

lulz Anyone check the TV ratings from this past weekend for the World Cup? Even with the USA out, they beat the pants off every hockey game that aired this week. LOLFAIL!

You are such a moron it makes my brain hurt. Cross Country combines girls and boys as 1 team according to your link. Soccer is divided into 2. Do you know what the fuck that means when talking # of participants or do I have to explain it to your dumb ass?

LOLFAIL. No fella. As much as I love soccer and will go to the grave defending it, his link shows more schools have CC than soccer. 641 schools have CC. 556 schools have boys soccer. 508 have girls soccer. That doesn't mean 1064 schools have soccer. All that says is basically 556 schools have soccer and 50 or so of them don't have girls soccer. lulz

    World Cup Fever!!!!

There is one boys soccer team in our HS league and that is of a school too small to have football. I think there is one girls team in the league as well, but I am not sure. All the athletes are too busy playing football in our league to even entertain the thought of soccer! Sure..it is great for those little rugrats to run around and play soccer when they are young but then they get to Junior High and join the football teams!

And I already explained why, jim teecher. Try to keep up.

Small towns are all about high school football and look at a newer, growing sport (as far as the OHSAA goes) like soccer as the enemy because, as another fall sport, it will detract from football numbers.

Shouldn't people be allowed to play whatever they want? Why do we "have" to play football? Or any sport for that matter

    Uh.

    Yeah.

Never said they couldnt. Just said in our area the boys play football and not soccer.

I'm so tired of all of the "this sport" or "that sport" conversations/debates.

Soccer is really the only sport that is bashed continuously by certain crowds. It's annoying. It's old. It just needs to go away -- the bashing and such. Let people enjoy what they want to enjoy and support them either way they may choose.

I don't need to defend my sport anymore, that's what I've tried to get my mindset to. Soccer can defend itself with being basically the "world's game" and definitely the most popular sport on earth. I could care less if anyone doesn't like it anymore...there's plenty of others that do.

Your bashing of soccer says differently. I hate nascar and baseball but I don't say they are gay and shouldn't be around.
  • TedSheckler
I wish every sport wouldn't be around except for futbol. (That's what all us huge fans call it.)

Not that I watched but of course you can't help but hear about the biggest massacre since Little Bighorn yesterday. Did the Nazis score more goals in one game than was scored by every single other team in the entire tournament? I understand the Amazon's best player (oxymoron in soccer) was injured, but is this sport so bad that missing one individual causes your team to crap down its leg like a dysentery outbreak? How many Brazilian whores were killed in the Rio ghettos last night by upset fans?...probably not as many as Adolph rained goals down on them.

Maybe true for the old farts or yahoo dad's who were from the good ol' days. My small towns school and a few in Auglaize county are no longer as fanatic for high school football.

Cross country and soccer numbers are up. Football is down.
