Fake News

GOONx19A little off topic, but someone mentioned integrity and it made me think of the HBO show Newsroom. If anyone hasn't watched it I really enjoyed it. The first season at least was great.

CenterBHSFanLooks like CNN is gaining notoriety as a news outlet that just isn't what it used to be!

Azubuike24Personally, whether you're right or left, you have to love the expose. The media is run and driven by money, from way above, those sinister enough to not give a shit about your partisan politics. If you're someone who truly believes in the Constitution, and in free speech, it's great to see the media slowly being phased out and in many ways, being reset. That doesn't mean what you want to be the truth, always is, but it's better than only getting one angle on everything.

fish82It's pretty funny that the left and the MSM invented the "fake news" meme as a gotcha, and it ended up blowing up in their face for the most part.

Pretty much.fish82;1838145 wrote:It's pretty funny that the left and the MSM invented the "fake news" meme as a gotcha, and it ended up blowing up in their face for the most part.
I just wish that major news networks would not be political affiliates. The cutting off the mic, the disruption, the exclusion - all happen everywhere. But the real shameful thing, for me, is that CNN used to be pretty neutral. -
BoatShoesAs someone considered on "The Left" the ability of "The Left" to outdue itself with even more extreme feelings fascism continues to amaze me.
Sort of feels like being a Browns fan listening to people say Johnny Manziel is the answer when everyone knows he isn't -

uh oh .........looks like CNN is about to get blasted by Project Veritas.
Get out the popcorn; this should be entertaining. -
Azubuike24Interesting. Better favorite those secondary news sites because you won't see this anywhere on your cable service.

They are sooooo out of touch it is mind boggling. The liberal urban-group think phenomena is downright scary. -
majorsparkTheir job is to inform people so they can decide what to think.

Azubuike24...and regardless what you believe, everyone should be allowed to speak, advertise and report what they want. Let the people decide.

But that MSNBC comment wreaks of an elitist - engrained and unconcious - belief that their job is to shape/present the news in such a way that the unwashed masses will believe what the elitist "knows" to be correct.Azubuike24;1838392 wrote:...and regardless what you believe, everyone should be allowed to speak, advertise and report what they want. Some of these lefties are just as fascist as they accuse Trump of being. At that's why they are both losing their shit over the other. For all his many flaws, Trump is pulling back the magic curtain and that maybe scares the liberal propagandists more than anything.
For 8 years, they collaborated with the Democrats and the Obama Admin to go after conservative media sheltered from any criticism or attacks. Now the shoe is on the other foot and they are in full-blown rage panic. -
Azubuike24Which is why Trump needs to do a better job not to feed the narratives they are continually reporting and using to convince the public otherwise.

I was speaking in the context of pure unbiased journalism. As one of the older posters on this forum that recall the days prior to the birth of the information age, it has been great thing for individual freedom and free speech. I don't fear the individual's easy access to the free expression of ideas. Elitists do. Sure some will gravitate to media outlets that scratch their balls and others that scratch their brain. In the free market of ideas an elitist attitude of control is the polar opposite of that of persuasion.Azubuike24;1838392 wrote:...and regardless what you believe, everyone should be allowed to speak, advertise and report what they want. I'm actually surprised that she said something like that. When you consider the fact that just a handful of months ago she got into some very hot water with the Clinton machine and therefore her employers at MSNBC over something that she had said. Something to the effect that the Clinton campaign should have "gotten off of their high horse". Maybe she should stick with just reading the prompter and letting Joe do most of the talking, like he does most of the time. Perhaps there's a reason for that routine.QuakerOats;1838357 wrote:https://news.grabien.com/story-brzezinski-our-job-control-exactly-what-people-think

My Father was a 50+ year newspaperman....reporter, editor, etc. He, and those of his day, viewed their job to report the news...not to put their spin (read opinion) on the news.
Today's 'news' is what was on the OP/ED pages 30 years ago...and that is where it should stay. -
Azubuike24Today's big stories are all bought with hush money from those actually with the information. Do you think Fox or CNN are the first on the scene at most breaking news events? Heck no, they buy the footage and make the people sign a gag order to not re-produce or re-report the stuff. Then, the MSM cuts whatever they purchased and show what they want or choose not to air it at all. This is why they hate the "fake news" so much...not only do they lose sources, but they are forced to report things as they are because there is obvious evidence elsewhere of what really is going on.

fish82Looks like all of O'Keefe's CNN stuff is from 2009...I'll be surprised if there are any bombshells.

Problem is that the general public is more interested in "news" that fits their personal beliefs than with legit, unbiased news, which leads to three big issues.majorspark;1838435 wrote:I was speaking in the context of pure unbiased journalism. 1. First, ALL the main networks to take a slant one way or the other in order to capture whatever demographics they're interested in because doing so equals more ratings, which equals more $$$.
2. Which leads to an influx of political-themed sites that go even further to the right or left, oftentimes also using a tabloid-style of clickbait writing, in order to regress from "being slanted one way" to "being over-the-top one-sided" (ie: "speaking to the crowd" who wishes the slanted networks would drop any pretense of humoring the other side).
3. And so we wind up with a populace that's becoming more disconnected from actual reality and living in a world where all the nation's ills are because of the other political ideology. Where people on both ends of the spectrum are convinced that mass media is biased against them, and so they go to those fringe sites that preach what they want to hear.
I mean, on one hand, it's kind of hilarious to watch a person who complains about biased media attempting to prove their point with links to extremely biased sites (right-wing or left-wing), but on a serious level, it's worrisome how stupid we're getting as a people, where the "reality" of news is determined more by how closely it aligns with our personal opinions, as opposed to actual reality. -

It wasn't that long ago - well, to me, anyway - that Ted Turner famously trumpeted that any CNN staffer caught using their word "foreign", as in foreign correspondents, foreign citizens, etc., would be fined. Instead, they were immediately to start using "international" instead.Spock;1838465 wrote:I love how the media uses the term "undocumented" immigrant and never call them "illegal"

And it was a CNN interview from just a few short years ago that got my attention. Remember when a woman got in trouble with an Akron area school district because she falsified official resident documents so her child would go to a "better" school district, instead of the one they actually lived in?
The media ignored the woman's forgeries, and instead cast the school district as a huge unfair bully. Mark Gallagos, interviewing the superintendent, said, "Sir, you know how this is playing out, don't you? The woman just wants the best for her kid, and it appears you are preventing her and her child from an education." (A lie - the district was doing no such thing, the mother was free to send her child to their actual resident school district)
Translation: "Sir, you know how we are framing the story, don't you? No, we are not going to talk about the mother forging official documents. No sir, we are not going there, we have already determined how we want our viewers to think. You are our target, not her." -
FatHobbitIt's not really a new trend for news to be biased though. It has been well documented that Ben Franklin used his position as postmaster general to have his newspaper Pennsylvania Gazette delivered by the postal service to increase his distribution. He had many pseudonyms that he used to write letters to influence public opinion. They just do it better now and each side tries to expose the other sides bias when everyone should know that both sides are biased.

I agree with your whole post. On this part in particular can anything be done to change this without infringing on individual liberty? We used have the fairness doctrine. Since it ended in the late 80’s those seeking to revive it in some form over the years have been members of the same political party.Heretic;1838488 wrote:3. IMO this has more to do with the nationalization of every ill, many of which are no business of the federal government. Driven by the federal government’s power to insert itself in these ills.living in a world where all the nation's ills are because of the other political ideology -
Azubuike24The big outlets are losing viewership. There are tons of resources that are independent and delivering information. Both the right and the left, and many of these are biased themselves, but they are competition and competition that aren't funded by the political and corporate elite.
