isadoregosh a ruddies, surprise, surprise a program to give many poorer young Americans a real chance at a living wage and upward social mobility is opposed by so many on this site.

Why don't you help a poor young American and pay their tuition? No one is stopping you. Why does it have to be everyone else's money you are so generous with?isadore;1694790 wrote:gosh a ruddies, surprise, surprise a program to give many poorer young Americans a real chance at a living wage and upward social mobility is opposed by so many on this site. -

The truly poor Americans can already get what they are in need of tuition wise. This program is for everyone, whether they are able to pay or not. It's ridiculous.isadore;1694790 wrote:gosh a ruddies, surprise, surprise a program to give many poorer young Americans a real chance at a living wage and upward social mobility is opposed by so many on this site. -

Did they go to community college for the first two years?rydawg5;1694767 wrote:Justin u are right and my internal ideology mirrors that. However investing in people is at least better than investing in shady foreign leaders I dunno it's the first time that a social party wants to waste money and I'm thinking okay.
I know so many people who owe over 50K in loans and while they manage it, it severely lowers their discretionary income which hugely impacts the economy.

I agree with that.rmolin73;1694654 wrote:I see this as more of a tool for the middle class because more than likely poor people already get the majority of the grant money. -
gutCommunity college is a good option to save money and transfer credits to a 4-yr degree. Otherwise, a waste of $80B.
Here's my issue: there is NO PROBLEM financing college if you get a degree that pays - the ROI is still very good despite the massive tuition inflation. So the question becomes if the taxpayer should subsidize worthless degrees like Art History and other bullshit.
Subsidies are usually bad in most cases and don't generally create superior outcomes, much less optimal ones. Viewed correctly, this deal is mostly just a massive wealth transfer from the taxpayer to the colleges (and in particular, mediocre ones). -
Pick6Good thinking gut. I don't think I'd have a problem with it if there are stipulations. Require students to major in in-demand fields, require that they have to graduate and transfer to a 4 year college or the money has to be repaid. I might be able to get behind something like that.
The student loan debt situation is a serious issue.
FWIW Con_Alma, I went to CC a year for free and then transferred to a 4 yr college. I did not work during school because I had a job where I made enough (more than I do now) in 3 months that I did not need to. I could have worked during school, but 20hrs a week with minimum wage, were talking pennies in the grand scheme of things. I graduated with around 52k in debt. The cost of college relative has multiplied quite a few times compared to increase in income since your day. -

Because it benefits to nation to have true social mobility. This is of course opposed by the selfish and greedy.Cleveland Buck;1694792 wrote:Why don't you help a poor young American and pay their tuition? No one is stopping you. I know exactly what the expenses of college are today. I have one there and one on the way.Pick6;1694819 wrote:Good thinking gut. I don't think I'd have a problem with it if there are stipulations. Would your debt have been lower if you stayed another year at Community College?
Do you think everyone should be given 2 free years even if they are able to pay? -

No millions in the fourth and fifth quintiles of income and wealth can not. But of course you are indifferent to the lack of opportunity for these folks.Con_Alma;1694793 wrote:The truly poor Americans can already get what they are in need of tuition wise. Bingo. Just as the cost of attending a 4 year university skyrocket when loan dollars became easily accessed, the once affordable community college costs will rise significantly as people who wouldn't normally take such a route decide to waffle for a year or two and take free services.gut;1694817 wrote:...Subsidies are usually bad in most cases and don't generally create superior outcomes, much less optimal ones. Why not increase the tuition rate when the expenses are guaranteed to be paid then recruit anybody and everybody to sign up?
I can see some States saying no thanks to the deal when they are tasked with finding a way to come up with their additional 25% or States may lower the amount they are already putting into the eduction system to meet the required portion of community college tuition costs. -

I disagree. Any income level can get a loan for a 4 year school and have that loan paid by the school if the individual doesn't get a job within 6 months of graduation paying at least $37,000 per year. The tuition charged is based on the familes income and the truly poor can come out with smaller loans guaranteed to be paid if they don't find work.
This deal affords even those able to pay and willing to pay, free services. It's crazy. -
Con_AlmaIt's really irrelevant until the House decides if they want to have it any way.

Tell you what I would do....get the govt out of the tuition subsidy business. Further, public universities receiving taxpayer funds should have tuition increases capped to pace inflation. THAT would make college more affordable for everyone.Con_Alma;1694835 wrote:It's really irrelevant until the House decides if they want to have it any way. -

no, it makes things better for the haves, but not the have nots.gut;1694840 wrote:Tell you what I would do....get the govt out of the tuition subsidy business. gosh a ruddies, Obviously you want to deny any chance at social mobility for those in need. A Republican Congress will grant you your wish and prolong the suffering of those in need.Cleveland Buck;1694843 wrote:So why don't know want to give some poor American social mobility? Is it any less selfish for the "have nots" to want such subsidies?isadore;1694844 wrote:no, it makes things better for the haves, but not the have nots.
