In theory, in order for such an argument to qualify as argumentum ad Hitlerum, it has to be established that what is being compared is not, in fact, a just comparison.HelloAgain;1631227 wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reductio_ad_Hitlerum
I'm making no claim either way on the subject at hand. Just suggesting that, perhaps, you want to add a little snippet as to why this qualifies as argumentum ad Hitlerum. -

I'm probably the most likely here to agree with you....and I have to say that looks like jibberish.O-Trap;1631276 wrote:In theory, in order for such an argument to qualify as argumentum ad Hitlerum, it has to be established that what is being compared is not, in fact, a just comparison.

Let me clarify:gut;1631329 wrote:I'm probably the most likely here to agree with you....and I have to say that looks like jibberish.
Argumentum ad Hitlerum is only fallacious if the comparison is not apt, at least in what is being compared.
My old high school's shop teacher had a moustache that looked like Hitler's. By comparing him to Hitler, am I making the aforementioned fallacy? I'd submit not for two reasons:
1. I can describe/demonstrate the similarity I've drawn, and
2. I am not implying any additional similarity based on the one I can describe.
If someone's ideology is, indeed, similar to Hitler's, then it is not fallacious to draw the comparison any more than it is for me to draw a comparison between my old school's shop teacher's moustache and Hitler's moustache. -

Certainly seems like it...Let me clarify:

I care about being clearly understood, to be sure. However, being clearly understood is not equitable to picking a side on the topic of whether or not a modern political character is aptly compared to Hitler.HelloAgain;1631528 wrote:...

So no, logically, it does not seem as though I care who is compared to who. I merely care to be clear and thorough in my articulation. -

A lot of effort being put forth here. No one can accuse you of not grinding it out.O-Trap;1631530 wrote:I care about being clearly understood, to be sure. Don't worry. It's not really much effort. I tend to be thorough by nature, so it comes naturally, more or less.HelloAgain;1631533 wrote:A lot of effort being put forth here. No one can accuse you of not grinding it out. -
