  Shouldn't Mitt being a businessman understand the concept of economies of scale and therefore know why the Red Cross and even most other charities/food banks prefer monetary donations to physical goods?
  
  Logistic reasons for that preference aside, charities can oftentimes get a much better price for the same product as someone else could due to agreements they have with suppliers and simple bulk savings. The Red Cross can probably get two cans of beans for the same amount I pay for one which is why it makes sense to give them money rather than buy them goods.This is precisely why the Red Cross asks for monetary donations or blood donations after events like the recent hurricane.
  
  So why wouldn't Romney base his hurricane assistance rally type events on that sort of goal? Probably because writing a check or collecting money doesn't make as good of a photo-op as seeing Mitt standing at a table sorting canned goods.
  
  Also, Christie deserves reps for how he's been with this whole thing. He's very critical of the President (obviously being a Republican and all) but he gives him praise in this situation because he's handled it well. That's the type of thing where if Christie does more of that he'll be in a very good position to do well on the national seen in the future.
  
  And Romney needs to answer the FEMA question. Does he still want to get rid of it or has he changed his position to whatever is politically expedient at the time on that one too?

  Did you miss the part where there were two giant TV's giving the Red Cross information if people would like to donate? It amazes me that people are hating on Romney because people brought non-perishable items.

  Funny thing is, after Katrina, Dems were all for disbanding FEMA. Now that Obama has dispatched them, it's a great organization.

  That hasn't been Mitt's stance on FEMA. It hasn't been that he wants Federal funding for emergencies just not FEMA, he wants to get rid of Federal funding for emergencies.

  IWP is obviously scared of a small government. There is no reason why states can't handle disaster relief for themselves.

  I'm saying the campaign bought the goods then had attendees pick them up from a table so they could take it to another table where Romney was so it appeared they were bringing in the goods themselves.
  
  The problem isn't that goods are being donated, that's a good thing (even though cash or blood is far preferable and the charities really don't want this kind of thing), the problem is that they claimed they were suspending the campaign and then turned this into nothing but a campaign ploy.
