The obvious answer to lowering costs of education is to fire up the printing press and just give out more money because creating money out of thin air is a great way to lower costs. Also all the money we have spent on education has paid off well obviously.
A couple years ago Obama actually mentioned (albeit on a side note) the inexplicable rising costs of college and how it needed to be controlled by the providers. I gave him credit for it then. I guess he's going all in with our "academics" charging $60,000/year to major in "protest studies." Follow the money.

No that's exactly what it means. We're all a part of it, not its property.

A republic is an association of independent states. Ohio is part of it. You are not.

Great generalized term. I am Ohio. You are Ohio. The land of Ohio is not a republic. What makes up Ohio is.

"When it comes to giving our kids the education they deserve, Barack knows that like me and like so many of you, he never could’ve attended college without financial aid.

And believe it or not, when we were first married, our combined monthly student loan bills were actually higher than our mortgage.

We were so young, so in love, and so in debt.
That’s why Barack has fought so hard to increase student aid and keep interest rates down, because he wants every young person to fulfill their promise and be able to attend college without a mountain of debt."

Isn't the size of the debt(mountain - the amount owed) un-related to the interest rates? Do the democrats understand economics?
Let's see... I go to college and have $50,000 in student loan debt. I could be wrong, but if my interest rate is 7% I would expect to pay a lower amount per month than if it were 14%.

No one is arguing that college is expensive, but compounding the problem with higher interest rates makes it more expensive.

Soooo....that $50k in student debt didn't go toward any economics classes, huh?

No. You folks trotted out an 80-something actor who bordered on incoherent. Of course, the R's have always had a thing for 80-something actors who border on the incoherent.

Don't worry, the Dems were trying to get Betty White. She could tell us how much better her cookies are with a little uncle sugar in it.

That's true but largely irrelevant, college costs increased because interest rates were lowered. You still have to pay back the principal. And the spread in interest rates are covered by the taxpayers. We have effectively subsidized a bubble, that IMO is going to burst. Do you not get this?

To further the educational funding debate, I just got the following e-mail. Notice how it blames the lack of funding on the state and federal government, and not a lack of spending on the University's end? There are professors making over $350,000/year (putting them in the 1% to my more progressive friends here) living in a relatively low cost area, and to my knowledge there has been a pay freeze but no cuts. That isn't the reality in the private sector, most businesses don't have taxpayer subsidies to maintain that type of spendthrift business model.

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends in the University Community:

At the end of August, students and their families traveled from their homes in Virginia and 40 states around the nation, as well as from 65 countries, converging on Charlottesville for the opening weekend of the fall semester. Welcoming a new first-year class and our returning undergraduate and graduate students is always an occasion of great joy and optimism.

As we saw in dramatic fashion this past summer, we face some difficult challenges here, including the erosion of state and federal funding, the need to adequately support our outstanding faculty, and the integration of new technologies to enhance teaching and learning. All institutions of higher education are facing these challenges. I am confident that U.Va.'s distinctive qualities and our strength as a University community will position us to emerge as a leader in this era of change.

As we start this academic year, I am grateful for your support of the University.

When will Republicans stop pretending like all of the Founding Fathers would agreed with them? If John Marshall would have written his opinions in this day and age they would have been burning him in effigy.
Marshall was not all that popular in his day either....the first true elitist who greatly expanded Supreme Court powers in the early republic. He was not actually a 'founding father' at least not without a few degrees of seperation. Not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, nor an original framer of the Constitution, he was in fact, a political appointee of Governeur Morris...a man who felt that the people needed to be saved from themselves.
Certainly an approprite pick of a modern day Democrat.

that is not the definition of a republic but of a confederation, a recipe for failed government.

Dana Milbank with an interesting take on the festivities.

Kinda reminds me of the "Winner's Circle" trips that companies throw for their top salespeople. I'm sure that's just a coincidence though.

If kids truly deserve a good education, where is the support for dismantling the failed union-controlled monopoly that is public sector education.

    Hypocrites!

How funny would it be if Obama's telemprompter got hacked and he had a Ron Burgundy moment? Romney could probably outsource that to the Chinese.

    Jerusalem: Pro-Israel Language Removed...
    Endorse taxpayer-funded abortions...
DNC Video: 'The Government Is The Only Thing We All Belong To'...

Throw all that stuff on top of the horrific economic performance and it is rather unfathomable how anyone in America could vote for this regime.
