Columbus City League Championships

80babySince the CCL Championship Tournament is 26 days away what are everyone’s thoughts about the tournament. Who’s your favorite team and top wrestlers at each weight class.
Just based from the CCL Team Duals one would say:
Mifflin
West
WR
W-stone.
But not so fast my friends! Final eligibility comes out Thursday and who knows what’s going to happen. Which teams might lose kids and who will pick up some kids that can make them a contender. I won’t say which team it is but I think there’s a huge sleeper that’s being overlooked that can make some real noise this year. Stay tuned for updates I’ll get with some of the other coaches and try to post some rankings soon. -
Westie101Assuming Bonner of Bhaven doesnt drop, Abdi of favorite at 106. Then Bonner and Ali of east set up what would be a very interesting rematch between two dq's. Em from West and Silverhorn from South were both DQ's and that should be a good final. Tate Mifflin the fav at 160 and Bobo Whetstone at 170. Ju Monroe Marion Franklin 182, and then Souths 195 or Marion Franklins Stepp.
-
80babyWhat weight will Em and Silverhorn be at for the tournament? I haven't heard anything about Silverhorn all season.
-
Fatmanroll>Peterson
Em will be at 132, that is his minimum. Silverthorn is a returning district qualifier from Worthington Kilbourne who transfered to South. He is a junior, and has not wrestled yet this season, so who knows? He will be at 138 or 132 if he is wrestling. South's Melvin McGlown will make some noise at 195.80baby;1566616 wrote:What weight will Em and Silverhorn be at for the tournament? I haven't heard anything about Silverhorn all season.
The sleeper you speak of I think is Marion Franklin. They got a late start because football did so well again this year. Coach Eagle and Coach Elmer are doing a great job. They had like 9 placers at Grandview Heights. Beware of the Red Devil Return!
Overall, this is who I think makes some noise:
106 Abdi West
113 Bonner Brookhaven, Ali East
120 ?
126 Tate Mifflin
132 Em West, Silverthorn South
138 ? (Silverthorn South ?)
145 ?
152 ?
160 Tate Mifflin
170 Mifflin Kid (can't remember his name), Independence Kid (Can't remember his name) and Bobo Whetstone
182 Monroe Marion Franklin
195 McGlown South, Wellborne Marion Franklin
220 ?
285 ?
Would really love to see H. Tate and Bobo go at it at 160 or 170. Would be MVP match of the City Tournament IMO. -

sackerdragHas Bashir been down at 113 yet?
-
Fatmanroll>Peterson
he was ill the first half of the season so he has not wrestled much but I am pretty sure he wrestled last week at 113. I saw Bonnar wrestled 120 a few weeks back?sackerdrag;1566934 wrote:Has Bashir been down at 113 yet? -
Westie101Have Frazier and NOrth wrestled yet? North is pretty tough!
-
It is what it isFrazier and Tate are wrestling partners in the room and get after it pretty good. Both have certified 160 and have been flip flopping between 160/170 for meets (Frazier will drop to 152 for sectionals).
North and Frazier haven't wrestled and it could go either way (I'm a lil biased, lol)...North is tough and technically sound and Frazier is very strong and explosive...the mystery will be solved in a few weeks! -
Tjones85Whetstone has two heavyweights that go back and forth in the room both with no losses in the city. IMO i take north over tate or fraizer at 160. bobo over frazier and toss up vs. Tate rematches are always interesting. North only weight 155 last year when he won 170, now he is at his actual weight and his 5 losses last year came when he was at 170 currently he only has 4 losses but all vs. D1 dist qualifiers or placers.

coachchuckIf i may i agree with the dual results but i think the haven is capable of scoring big at cities got a few dogs that i saw this weekend at licking heights. I myself with my new squad at I high am having a ball got a few guys that can bang but overall just so green. If i was going to forcast the finish this is how i see it
Mifflin: seems to be the deepest but grades are coming.
west: some solid light weights but can the top of the line up score enought
whetstone: got guys sprinkled thru the line up
walnut ridge: good core but not sure about their strenght of schedule but their a full team
Marion Franklin: three finalist i see and some guys that can win matchs
brookhaven: lead by bonner and powell also like their 220 and 126
cennt: havent seen them but know they always have guys that are tough in this tourney
Indy:have to say we can finish in the top half but we are super young
northland:wouldn't be suprised if indy and northland flip flop here
Eastmoor/east/linden/afro/beechcroft/briggs/south: low numbers not sure how they will shake out the rest of the team placement. -
playground legendI think ITC is gonna cover this tourney this year.

It is what it is
I can't see any way North or Bobo beats Tate (depending where coach T puts him ), but Frazier not quite at his level.Tjones85;1567055 wrote:IMO i take north over tate or fraizer at 160. bobo over frazier and toss up vs. Tate rematches are always interesting. Tate has 1 loss this year....to a DII SQ at 170.
Get at me, bra! LOL -

Tjones85Bobo and Tate was a good match last year. Im sure both have improved . Was a interesting clash of styles Tate good on his feet bobo a mat wrestler hence toss up. North is just a different wrestler different styles make different match ups. Now Bobo only has 2 losses 1 at the first Tournament of season and then another D1 Sq . But has beat 1 D1 SQ and 3 D1 Dist Dis Qualifiers. North has also wins over D1 Dist Qualifiers. We can go back and forth all day on criteria, but ill give my dues Tate is a SQ and a good wrestler
One must show bias only the right thing to do in my opinion.
Like i said ill give kidos where they are due Coach T has done a good job has had SQ for the last 3 years the 220 a few years ago mills was always close tate robinson.
Coach T success shows the work that he put in at the youth level. Much respect for that, but it will be interesting to see how things go in the future. -
CPSpride87As a former graduate of back then Columbus Public Schools and now a parent with a son who is now wrestling I've starting to pay attention to wrestling in Columbus City Schools. Very interesting to see all the reply's to this topic I did not know the City was such a popular topic. Tjones or It is what it is, What was the score last year between Bobo and Tate? Sounds like it was a barn burner.
-
80babyCPSpride87 the final score was 11-2MD Tate over Bobo in the finals at 152 last year.
-
It is what it is
Bobo is a good wrestler and so is North, no disrespect whatsoever! But...Hannibal, when focused and motivated is on a different level, imo. I think there are 3 elite guys in the city that just separate themselves from everyone else... Tate, Monroe & Abdi. Then there are a bunch of guys who are really good (too many to name) and several that have potential. It's those potential guys that win a team the city title, especially when 2-3 teams are very closely matched, again, imho.80baby;1567414 wrote:CPSpride87 the final score was 11-2MD Tate over Bobo in the finals at 152 last year.
I agree, one has to be biased towards their team, their guys, I wouldn't have it any other way! We, or at least I, have respect for every city team and coach because I know what "we" deal with each and every day!!
Good luck to all teams! : thumbup: -
sackerdragNow that I am no longer coaching in the city league I feel like I can weigh in on some of these debates. Ultimately you have to first look at past post season success to get an idea of the truly elite guys in the city. That being said, Jhulyis Monroe and Hannible Tate are easily the two guys with the best resumes coming into the season. Next would have to be guys like Abdi, Bonner, Ali, Wellborn, and anyone else with experience at the district tournament. After these guys are guys who we knew were good but seem to have stepped it up this year and have results against established competition, like Bobo. Lucky for everyone this stuff gets decided on the mat not the message boards. Personally a match I am looking forward to is a rematch of last year's 106 final between Bonner and Ali. Both guys won matches at districts last year and seem poised to make a run at the Schott at 113. Bonner is super explosive on his feet and by all accounts is bigger and badder this year. I think the time off may actually help Bashir return to form. He is a super talented wrestler who trained his butt off for a 18 months straight and I believe that and the weight cut affected his performance late last year. I like the contrast of styles and think both guys will be up for the match given the history.
