cruiser_96I think the first round and MAYBE the first two rounds will have light crowds. I hope schools (students, administrators, families, etc.) would rally behind "their" school.
It would be cool if an AD would step up and offer like a package deal for students... $5 will get a bus, a bagged lunch/dinner, a ticket into the event, and maybe something else. Maybe even do a theme. Can you imagine getting two bu-loads of students following the team's bus!?!?!?! The possibilities would be - not endless - but many! Balloons, streamers, headbands, noise makers!!! AAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!
Whatever, dude. -
huntergreen26I personally love this state dual format. I think last night was awesome, aside from my squad losing. The kids from both schools were into each and every match, the crowd was loud and enthusiastic from both sides, and it was a great atmosphere. I think the next few rounds will be awesome! Bravo OHSAA!!!

lion69I thought this format was sponsored by the coaches association so they would reap any benefits?
-
cruiser_96
No. The dual meet championship is now hosted by the OHSAA. The individual tournament is now hosted by the Coaches Association.lion69;1373646 wrote:I thought this format was sponsored by the coaches association so they would reap any benefits? -

I figured the first rd would suck just because of all the mismatches.Jmar25;1373603 wrote:I was at University School last night and there was supposed to be 5 teams, 1 team was a no show- no call. The other 4 teams brought in around 50-60 people I'd say. Maybe things will change next week but I'm sorry guys, I don't think there is such a thing as "casual" wrestling fans. If your school is traditionally strong like an Ed's/Graham/Wadsworth/Waynedale then you'll bring in a crowd. There were many factors (distance, time of day, time of night, weather) but I didn't see this event in its current form adding much more of anything than money in OHSAA's pocket. Judging from the many I've talked to and what I witnessed first hand, I don't even think that any money was made by OHSAA. It just seems this will be business as usual. I'll save final judgement for next week but I fear by then it will be mostly your hardcore wrestling schools that already bring crowds by then.
Next week SHOULD be great with better match ups and potentially 2 matches.
I hope our students will come next week.
It will be a shame if they dont! -
HilliardDadLooking at Baumspage, at all the other regions in Div 1. Some highlights
Multiple #6 over #3 upsets.
Gahanna Lincoln over Teays Valley
Central Crossing over Cols. West
Findlay over Fremont Ross
One #7 Hudson over #2 No Royalton, which looks like it was one exciting match.
Moeller with a perfect 84-0 score, may have been one of the fastest duals this year. 5 forfeits, 7 pins in first rd. 2 pins in 2nd rd. -
CthelitesMaybe instead of calling it sub regions, they can call it sectional or district.
That has a lot more bite trying to get the students out to root for their school when they are "going for the district championship" then to the "regional final"
Next weeks announcements will be:
"come out and support your wrestling team Wed night going for the Sub Regional finals."
Instead of:
"come out and support your wrestling team Wed night going for the District finals."
We just won the District and are going to the Regional Final! Instead of We just won our Sub Regional and are going to the Regional Final!
Just some food for thought for next yr.
I think the students could embrace it a little more being more familiar with those terms...Sectional, District, Regional.
This week could have been called the Sectionals, next week the Districts and then the Regionals.
Sometimes you got to dumb it down for the masses. -
maddog140So how did the seedings work for this? Do they rank them all the way down or just say top ten and then random placement?
-
HilliardDad
coaches in each sub region ranked the teams in that sub regionmaddog140;1373668 wrote:So how did the rankings work for this? Do they rank them all the way down or just say top ten and them random placement? -

It was first broken down geographically. Not sure what map they used tho???maddog140;1373668 wrote:So how did the rankings work for this? Do they rank them all the way down or just say top ten and them random placement?
Then once the sub regions were set, the coaches voted seeding within their own sub region. -
nykcOne thing that irritates me about the first round - The matchups Thomas and Kilbourne wrestle in Duals, Pick North and Lancaster do as well. Lets mix it up a little and have sectionals consist of duals like OCC Central vs OCC Capital or Cardinal etc, that way you get exposed to kids you haven't seen already.
and Cthelites I agree (we should call it Sectionals, Districts, Regionals etc...) -
cruiser_96
I thought about utilizing the conferences as a precurser to the State Duals. And while the OCC would NEVER go for it, it would take breaking down the 32-team MEGA conference (which really, what IS it good for?) into smaller, regionally based conferences that the OHSAA could piggy-back onto for conference, regional, and state supremecy!nykc;1373682 wrote:One thing that irritates me about the first round - The matchups Thomas and Kilbourne wrestle in Duals, Pick North and Lancaster do as well. I still do not see the benefit in winning your conference. In NCAA football I do, and I still sort of do in NFL football - same as MLB baseball - and perhaps soccer and hockey, and guess what they all do??? they tie post season play into the conference standings!!!!!!!!!
Just saying. -
USMCdevil2005All good ideas fellas!
Why didn't Akutsu and Walker of Marysville wrestle? Walker sick or hurt? Would liked to have seen that. -
huntergreen26Tying it into conference standings would only work in certain situations. For example, Big Walnut is the only D2 school in the OCC. How would their results fit into the D2 state tourney?
-
USMCdevil2005
That was the same thought I had. Teays and Canal are the only D1 schools in the Mid State League. There are d2 teams and 2 d3 teams in the MSL. So i don't think that would work. Also teams like DeSales and St. Charles and Hartley who are all 3 different divisions, and are in the Catholic league. Where they only have a tournament every year. It would be hard to make it into the league duals play a part into it.huntergreen26;1373714 wrote:Tying it into conference standings would only work in certain situations. cruiser_96
Which is why the OCC would have to breakdown. The MSL would have to morph as well. Hence... NEVER going to happen.huntergreen26;1373714 wrote:Tying it into conference standings would only work in certain situations. For example, Big Walnut is the only D2 school in the OCC. But still... what have I really gained as a conference champ??? A $200 bill for a banner in my gym!? (Don't get me wrong... as a man who has spent over a thousand dollars putting up traditino in our room, I understand the importance of visual stimulants, but...) -
thevikingone way to do it is seed all team like they do in BB and break it down and pick a line just like you would at a seeding tourn
you still have two Regions. -
nykcFor central ohio purposes - why not a Super 32 bracket. Seed the top 8 teams and a lottery draw for the rest of the matchups.
-
cruiser_96Because by region makes sense on a Wednesday night. Lancaster was supposed to travel to Mount Vernon. MOUNT VERNON!!!!!!!!!!!! That's a ways away.
Use I-70 and I-71 and call it a day. NW, NE, SE, and SW. More teams in one region than another? Oh well, or grab the clasest to the border and bring him across. Ensure a central location.
Whatever, dude. -
rassler
Mt Vernon is an hour from Lancaster- Route 37 to Route 661 - hardly the other side of the moon. They just wrestled a weekday OCC 2 x 4 at Grove City which is roughly an hour from Lancaster.cruiser_96;1373754 wrote:Because by region makes sense on a Wednesday night. Quit this nonsense of waiting for your sectional assignment until Febuary. OHSAA needs to
TELL each school in October what sectional they will be in for both the individual and team tournaments. Run your team brackets as you would the individual tournaments- Section Champ qualifies for Districts and District Champs meet in 4 team bracket for the title. Three dates and you have your champion. Each region of the state would have representation. Why make it complicated? -
nykcDo a Super 32 and bang it out in the Schott! -or- a Central location to all schools in the area.
I mean Darby isn't necessarily next door for New Albany or the Worthington's.
Do a Super 32 with a North and South where NW/NE meet and SW/SE meet using your 70/71 theory.
But to have school dualing out after they already met in OCC for whatever reason, it kinda takes away the excitement. I mean I was not ecstatic we were facing a cross town rival that we rolled in a Dual a few weeks prior. I would much rather have seen a different matchup. -
Cthelites
Why did they switch Mt Vernon then? Werent they in 5A originally? I get why they did it but...thats what you run into when they flopped them in with the SE teams...travel.cruiser_96;1373754 wrote:Because by region makes sense on a Wednesday night. If you seed, you could still chose where to go tho right? Pick the line.
Top seed has to pick first or do they go last???
The first rd is really the biggest issue/concern imo.
I think it could be done a little differently but as said before, its the first yr and kinks will have to be ironed out.
I hope they actually try to make the changes for the betterment of this tho and not turn a blind eye.
