I know a lot of people were against this new format, and when all said and done mt Vernon and marysville come out of region 5 and 6 but I am looking forward to next weeks matches. I think this is great.

Ouch!! lol oh well good showing. lol pastorozzy85 calling "crushed" on the back of 18 freebies and three studs on the bench on top of that haha. take nothing from the pick kids, tho. great job, boys! anyway, good luck to all the teams who made it out of round one!

Maybe "crushes" was a little strong but when you are watching the match and not knowing who starters are or aren't and it ends 55-22, it is easy to say it didn't seem like a close match.

agree for sure. definitely not close. i'm guessing from your comment that no rosters were provided? that's sort of lame for what should be a well run dual. would be interested in knowing what watkins lineup was for this. i know they had some good kids earlier this year, just hope they're not out for the season.

Question...did they not hand out possible lineups?
Did they not announce who was going on the mat?

It just blows me away that hardly anyone does this????
Everyone asks how to grow the sport...make it fan friendly... get students/fans to come out...
well the first thing is to let the people know what the h$ll is going on.
Is it that hard to print up a probable line up and have an announcer say who is stepping on the mat??????????????

Ill give props to Darby's Coach Moody. He has lineups available at EVERY dual/tri meet hosted by Darby.
And almost always has an announcer (the announcer doesnt have to give a play by play either, just say who is on the mat at what weight and then announce the winner).
How many bball or fball games dont have this?
  • Cthelites
And that was by all means not entirely directed at you pastorozz...
MOST places we go to have absolutely NOTHING as far as rosters or anything else.
Lucky to even know what weight class it is most times!
    SAD!
  • Cthelites
And where are all the scores???
Cant we even get on the same page for the playoffs?

    OK end of rant!

The wrestlers were announced before the duel and right as their match began at Pick Central

No lineups on a hand out. But they did announce each match. The biggest problem though is knowing if the person wrestling is a starter or just filling a spot. Not to many sports can you see a starting line up change weekly as you do in wrestling

I've noticed this season that a lot of coaches don't havetheir pre-match weigh in form which would really help the announcer andofficial score keepers with line ups. Pleasedon't take this wrong but from talking to quite a few coaches they have no cluehow to print our the pre-match weigh in form since the procedure haschanged. At some point every coachshould be given detail instructions on how to print the form out. It makes it a lot easier for the table workerand announcer to keep the fans informed of each match. If anyone on this forum doesn't know how toprint our the form just ask and you shall receive. Great job to all the winning teams tonightand I wish you all the best next week.

So what was it scratch +3 or 5 tonight? The big question iswhat's it for teams that have duals tomorrow or maybe wrestling Thursday thru Saturday?
  • Cthelites
+3 tonight and it will top out at +4 tomorrow.

As far as the pre weigh in form...make it mandatory or FF a weight or something like that. IDK it cant be too hard can it?
In baseball you have to give your lineup to the ump/official score keeper.

Tonight at Pick Central they announced the teams and opponents facing each other before the dual started, and then before their match they announced who the wrestlers were. I think a lot of people just don't listen. lol! As far as getting the kids from those schools involved.... They can announce it over the pa everyday for a week and a lot of kids still wouldn't show up on Wednesday night. If it was a friday night then I think you would see alot more of the student body and the community. Teays, Gahanna , and Watkins all had a nice following of parents and spectators as usual.

This is somewhat easier said than done. Lineups change all the time...kids get sick or injured (or become ineligible!), guys drop weight, and coaches move guys around based upon match-ups with the opposing team. We'll often move guys during the match, and not decide who's going out at a particular weight until we see who the OTHER team is sending out.

To make half full nelson's case stronger, take the Coffman vs. Orange match last night. Coffman was hit by the flu pretty hard this week and had to bump some kids and take some unexpected forfeits. The table had the actual weigh in sheet but decided to go by the tenative line-ups the coaches put in to baumspage over a week ago. As a result, the names and results are all out of whack in the Dispatch. It's an honest error but confusing, to say the least.

Good luck to Orange as they move forward. Coach Nicola has himself a nice squad.

I'll throw my 2 cents in.....

I'm not sure how this situation happened? When I work the table, I make sure that I clearly understand each wrestler's name as they check-in before their match. If you have the weigh-in sheet, and are careful to record the correct wrestler in the book, there is no excuse for the scenario you described above.

Can coaches weigh-in an unlimited number of guys? I would think that generally a coach weighs-in a couple extras so that he has lattitude to make a few strategic moves if necessary. But guys can only bump one weight, so if you have the line-up that actually weighed-in (which you do), AND if guys are checking in at the table (which they do), then surely someone can tell the spectators the weight class and who walking onto the mat to compete.

Perhaps for a different thread, but sort of along the same lines ... in how many B-ball games (or pick any other sport) have you seen egregious timing errors (forgetting to stop the clock when the ball goes out of bounds, or start it when play resumes), or scores be given to the wrong team? Yet these ridiculous errors happen in nearly every match in wrestling. Not every Dual ... every MATCH. Even when fans understand the sport, it's tough to follow when the score-keepers are frequently so incompetent. Seems very bush-league, and cannot help the popularity of the sport from the fans' perspective.

    Bingo!
Coach gives possible line ups card(even 2 wrestlers per weight if he wants to try to be sneaky lol), when wrestler checks in with the table you know who is wrestling.
I know that our announcer at Darby sometimes gets it wrong only because he goes straight off the pre made list.
I had to tell him to wait and check with the mat stats as to who is actually wrestling. He has done a much better job.

I get the whole bumping thing. Thats part of what makes the duals exciting to watch.

This happened last night on a scramble situation and the ref gave a questionable 2 that was argued and then the score was wrong and that got argued and the match stopped for a while. One of my friends who is a parent of a football player and strong school supporter that came to watch and support us, but really doesnt know much about wrestling asked me, "why did they stop the match?" I had to explain and he still looked perplexed by my answer so I said its like going under the "hood" for football. Gotta get it right!

I was at University School last night and there was supposed to be 5 teams, 1 team was a no show- no call. The other 4 teams brought in around 50-60 people I'd say. Maybe things will change next week but I'm sorry guys, I don't think there is such a thing as "casual" wrestling fans. If your school is traditionally strong like an Ed's/Graham/Wadsworth/Waynedale then you'll bring in a crowd. There were many factors (distance, time of day, time of night, weather) but I didn't see this event in its current form adding much more of anything than money in OHSAA's pocket. Judging from the many I've talked to and what I witnessed first hand, I don't even think that any money was made by OHSAA. It just seems this will be business as usual. I'll save final judgement for next week but I fear by then it will be mostly your hardcore wrestling schools that already bring crowds by then.
