ps: don't rub your eyes. -
cruiser_96So I'm doing a program for our school's first ever Atheltic Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Our school's first state championship of the team sort was in 1910 in baseball. Our school's first individual state championship was Pat Curto, in 1972, for wrestling, at 185lbs. In an attempt to celebrate Mr. Curto, our wrestling team still uses the mats that he used! YAY!!! for us.
Coach Stoll... expect a call soon. -

I'm pretty dumb a lot of the time. Just wondering is their a sarcastic tone in your comment?cruiser_96;1262771 wrote:In an attempt to celebrate Mr. Curto, our wrestling team still uses the mats that he used! YAY!!! for us.
How many times can a mat be resurfaced?
I'm assuming a mat 40 years old would not be rolled up and moved often. -

You may or may not be dumb a lot of the time. I don't know you personally to know the answer to that. However, the fact that you picked up on my sarcastic tone tells me you get it right more often than not.said_aouita;1262814 wrote:I'm pretty dumb a lot of the time. We can no longer roll either set of mats we practice on. We use mat tape to try to stop the splitting. (ps: I think you can only resurface once. I could be wrong on that.)
In an effort to try to raise money in order to buy a mat, then-head coach Mr. My Brother, walked into the AD's office and said we are going to host tournaments in order to do three things: #1) Enter a tournament that is not poorly run***, 2) run a tournament which benefits the level of competition and 3) raise money to buy mats.
After four years of running AT LEAST 3 tournaments, how much money do we have??? around $500. Hence one reason my brother is no longer the head coach.
*** denotes us deciding to run JV tournaments stemmed from two things... #1) the unorganization we experienced at other's tournament and b) the insistance (insistence???) of using tournament software. After experiencing those two things we said,"That's it. We're running our own."
It started with two JV tournaments, which led to a youth tournament being added, which led to a freshmen tournament being added. Our varsity tournament came from a chain of circumstances that I will type because currently, a) I can, and b) I'm stalling to write a one page paper on "Reinforcing Appropriate Behavior".
Varisty tournament 'X' was cancelled due to snow. In order to get those matches in, we joined another tournament. Realizing this wasn't the best fit for our kids, in the caoches room we bagan talking about tournament options for the following year. As we looked at the landscape of tournaments, we saw a lack of individual, bracket style tournaments. Especially as the season approached the post-season.
Our philosphy was/is in December and early January, get matches. Build up video files of your matches in order to have a database in which to look into. But, as the post-season looms, we need our kids to realize that it's go-time! If you lose, you drop to the consolation bracket and the pressure gets turned on.
We also saw a host of dual meet tournaments, of which (the format), we are not fond of.
So, we devised our 14-team, 12-man bracket tournament. -

said_aouitaOnly reason I ask, I know somebody around these parts who had (maybe still has it?) a piece of the mat which was in the Jordan garage.
Nothing wrong with keeping old mats for a use. Good enough for Dan.

cruiser_96Who is Dan Gable?
Also, what I would LOVE to do is convert the old mats into wall mats. That would be awesome!!! And probably much safer than the cinder blocks that are currently there. -

Pretty sure he became rich as a chicken farmer in Nebraska and later famous for coaching Jimmy "superfly" Snooka.cruiser_96;1263528 wrote:Who is Dan Gable?
Cinder walls don't give too much. Ow. A great sound when bodies hit the metal walls in the old wrestling room. Plenty of give though and all the dents added character.cruiser_96;1263528 wrote:

Also was cool to see somebody tossed out the swinging doors. -
cruiser_96Superfly!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!! That is awesome. He was awesome. Can't tell you how many times I jumped of the top rope most would call my dresser onto my bed!

snugglyhippoHow many of you are old enough to have wrestled on a mat with a square instead of a circle? I did...sad.
-
cruiser_96When I was a kid, our Little Cruiser tournament had one for the kids. It was quite small, but it was square. Also, I have tapes of a 91 or 92 grad of Franklin Heights... He was at a tournament that was using them. Weird...

said_aouitaTrolling a little but I found this link and wanted to share. Taking the way back machine to that 70's show in Wisconsin.
This old timers barn in which may of had a small square mat but mostly was just multiple old layers of carpet. Will confirm about the square mat later.....
