I could save up $50k over the course of a couple years without the need for a loan. I'm not saying I would do it to travel into space, but it's very achievable if you know how to prioritize your spending. My wife and I are currently paying off our truck loan, go figure, and we're paying $2k per month (loan is like $500/mo) so we can get it off the books within the next 12 months.

It sounds like You Need A Budget. Every single dollar we earn is tracked and has a job.

You’re not wrong … most people don’t need a vehicle that expensive. But they do need a vehicle. And they end up getting one that expensive bc the want you speak of takes over and the relative ease of access to money to get for said vehicle.  That’s not the case with vacations and excursions though is my only point.  No bank and giving you loans to take those like a car loan bc there’s no collateral like said car to get back when you default.

That’s why it’s a bad comparison to say “well people spend that much on cars”.

1/3 of My town has them and 1/15th of the need it…..but they are all over the place

I’m pretty sure most people would look at me and say that dude doesn’t need a truck. And I don’t have one anymore. But when I did I had a 5th wheel camper we took everywhere. Now with the kids sports we never use it so I sold it.  But I guess I’m saying … a lot of people look like they don’t need a truck but maybe have a purpose like that for one. I know I personally always had people asking me why I needed a truck.

If you would pay $50k to go to space, you’re an idiot. Less dumb than spending $250k to go look at a stupid sunk boat in a tin can, but still dumb. Spending $60k on a truck, much less dumb. Can barely buy a 3rd row SUV for that.

Yeah. Cheapest Suburban you can find is around $60k with nothing in it.

Or maybe it’s weird you’ve always had people questioning you. I can’t imagine giving a shit who drives what. As long as you can afford it do whatever you want.

In my past, I’ve had “friends” ask me that.  Of course, I’m “nunya and stfu”.  I don’t have friends anymore….just acquaintances.

I’d imagine bc it was a truck that was overkill for normal use  it was a diesel  superduty with a 8 ft bed. Since I just have a normal job, not one that requires a truck, I’m sure that’s why they asked. Definitely not something I enjoyed filling up bc diesel was $5 a gallon at that time, but with the 5th wheel camper I didn’t have much choice.

People don’t hate billionaires out of pure jealousy.

None of these things they’re funding for their enjoyment will ever be affordable for regular people. What has ever been funded by rich people for their enjoyment that has ever become affordable?

Cruises, air travel, cell phones, should I keep going?

All of them were originally only for the rich and exploited heavily to/for rich people

All are now affordable for the average Joe.

Did you really think that comment through?

I cannot get through to some people on this point (irl). They act like this was the first manned exploration down to see it.

Yeah… my point is shit like this and space travel won’t ever become slightly affordable until it’s necessary. And I can’t think of an instance where going to see the ruins of wreckage is necessary. And never in our lifetime will recreational space travel neither. It will always be a high cost luxury in the foreseeable future no matter how many billionaires want to do it.

We went from riding horses to commercial air travel in 1 generation.

We will see upper middle class able to afford travel out of our atmosphere in my kids lifetimes (they are late teens early 20s)

Only a fool buys a 60k truck if it’s not going to generate profit.  I got a single cab 8ft bed 2w drive 2009 Dodge 1500.  Got a little north of 15k in her.  Had her for years and likely many more.  Serves me well.

Damn, guess I am a fool then buying a Raptor just because I wanted one.

Just drove that thing to Florida from Ohio for vacation and will be heading back Friday. What a great ride it was down

1290. For some reason that is engrained in my mind. Couldn’t tell you my ACT if I was reading it.

I never took the SAT and as one of the dumber guys on here just eeked out a 24 ACT back in the day.

My son took the PSAT and scored a 1490 (1520 is perfect score)….converts to a 1560 SAT lol

Off topic but it’s cool that 2 barely above average people can have super smart kids.

as you were…. 😁

I was focusing on a different demographic wanting to spending that kind of cash.  The 60k truck example was brought up.  It was intended to make a point (envy of the rich).  I just spent nearly 30k on a tractor and chainsaw.  Not going to make a profit off of it.  But I wanted it and enjoy it.  Your about my age so you get it.

Can't take it with you!

Seriously, I often kick myself over even owning a car when I drive 5000 miles per year.  You can almost see the money burning in the garage.  But, when I do drive, I want to drive something nice.  LOL, if you do the math it's probably $1 per mile I'm paying.

I at least bided my time - waited like 6 months to finally pull the trigger on a CPO that checked all the boxes.  Saved about $12k....5500 miles when I got it.  Yeah, you can do a little better looking for a clean used vehicle that's 1-2 years old, but the CPO warranty adds extra piece-of-mind.  And I keep it for 8-10 years, so I come out a good ways ahead of leasing.

That's definitely not entry-level, but I'd also argue it's not the high-end luxury market.  Just about any decent new vehicle without a lot of options now run close to $40k.

Cars are also probably the biggest purchase most people spend well beyond their means, because they don't save up $60k, they just stretch to come up with $500 per month.  Which really goes to the point I was making earlier that $50k is within reach for a lot of people if that's their lifetime dream purchase.  Someone ready to retire could decide "you know what, I'll work one more year so I can take that space trip".
