So, those dudes trapped under water in a cheap sub while looking for the Titanic...

Yeah, I would be stunned if it wasn't some sort of malfunction and they were all crushed 5 days ago or whatever. I honestly hope thats the case. I cannot fathom floating in darkness for this long knowing it was ending at any time. This is my irrational fear of floating out into space realized in a potential circumstance.

So you good during flying?

Can't believe all the jokes being made about this. How do you sink that low?

Definitely some Darwin Award winners here. Can't fathom the stupidity of wanting to do this. If I want to see the Titanic I Google "Titanic" and see the pics online.

As mentioned, hopefully this ended fairly quick for them so they didn't have to suffer.

Yeah, never had an issue flying. Probably cause I started at like 4 years old. My fear of space is completely irrational. I will never be in position to float out into the ether.

Apparently a debris field has been located near the Titanic.  Could be the imploded remnants.

Seems they are confirming debris is from the sub.

Would it sound cheesy if I said that if they found da Brie,  they had a Gouda search?

Found 1600 feet from the bow....probably just on the horizon and never even got to see the Titanic.

Still a better safety record than the Space Shuttle

Some of the debris near the bow, other parts 1600 feet away.  Glad they didn't have to suffer for 4 days.

We all get the fascination of history.  The wonder of how people lived before us. Over a century later five more people entombed in the deep.  I have visited many historical graves a sign to let this one rest.

So they knew the sub imploded on Sunday?

People allow their jealousy of the rich to say amazingly insensitive things.

I get it, it seems like kind of a dumb thing to spend $250k on, but that's also how technological advancements get funded.  Rich thrill seekers will fund all those early SpaceX missions, and ultimately make "affordable" tourism to Mars possible....some day.

Unfortunately, this just seems like bragging rights.  I can't imagine you get a better view down there than you would from all the video/photos we've seen taken in ideal conditions and enhanced.  Whereas I could see pictures from space never doing that experience justice.

People don’t hate billionaires out of pure jealousy.

None of these things they’re funding for their enjoyment will ever be affordable for regular people. What has ever been funded by rich people for their enjoyment that has ever become affordable?

It’s definitely a component. Exploitation is a little larger component though

I think you’re misunderstanding what was created for profit vs what was funded by their entertainment?  How exactly were cellphones funded by rich people’s enjoyment? Transportation? Yeah that had nothing to do with governmental subsidies, I guess…Definitely rich people enjoyment.  If you’re that loose with definitions, all of the modern world was funded by rich people for their enjoyment.

The more I think about I can see your point you were making. Almost everything wouldn’t come into existence if people with disposable income didn’t buy it first.

This was my point. When people were talking about cell phones, someone had to fund it. And at the time, it was looked at (likely) as something that would never be needed or catch on. But a rich person looked at it as a way to make money, because other rich people would be in the market for it. And so the science and tech kept pushing.

Of course I was being very loose with all the transportation stuff. But the Model T sure as shit wasnt being marketed to the lower class poor. It was definitely a status to own a car vs travelling by horseback. Without the rich wanting to constantly one up each other, I dont think we get to a lot of things because nobody wants to take on the risk of the product being worthless or not wanted. A product needs to be exclusive (for the most part) when its initially launched, as a cost effective way to actually manufacture it. That leads to high prices initially. Rich people HAVE to be interested/invested in the success of new products for them to become mainstream where the rest of the population can enjoy them.

Yeah… my point is shit like this and space travel won’t ever become slightly affordable until it’s necessary. And I can’t think of an instance where going to see the ruins of wreckage is necessary. And never in our lifetime will recreational space travel neither. It will always be a high cost luxury in the foreseeable future no matter how many billionaires want to do it.

That could probably be said of a lot of things, though.  It hardly has to be "necessary" for there to be enough demand to make it affordable.  That's literally the foundation of tourism, and many places are nearly entirely reliant on tourism.

However, when it comes to both space and deep ocean travel, VR will probably be almost indistinguishable.  In both cases you're literally in a capsule looking out a view port, which is pretty much identical to VR...

Necessity has always been the breeder of demand and invention though. All this stuff seems like shit ultra wealthy spend on bc they have done literally everything else

If/when space travel drops to $50k, there will be a very, very high demand for it, imo.
