Huh, guess I'd forgotten to start one earlier. Having a shit team playing for a future that will probably never come does that to you. In short: Some good potential with the offensive youth, but a pitching staff that could wind up with an "IS THIS FOR REAL!?!?!" bad season, especially with how top prospect Mitch Keller still seems to be in "doesn't get it" form and the team has to use fucking Chad Kuhl as their opening-day starter. Kuhl might be a decent #5 starter for a team hoping to luck into the second wild card if everything falls their way, but guys whom your happy for when they go 5IP, 2ER don't inspire too much confidence.

Regardless of the incoming 55-107 season, things opened with a win over the Cubs. Heh, fuck those guys. Had a solid day with the bats and used the "if the other team never gets comfortable with a pitcher, how much will they struggle?" strategy to perfection with Kuhl going 3 and six other guys going 1 each. And, to repeat myself: It's the Cubs, fuck those guys.

If we're being honest, I'd guess half or more of the teams in MLB can say that.

From 1-0 to 1-2 AND with Ke'Bryan Hayes moved to the DL in order to remove one of the very few reasons to be excited from the picture.

Oh well, they were above .500 for one day this year and that's one more than I was expecting, so there's that!

So, you're saying that murdering your fucking AD should be considered justifiable homicide? Because Chad Kuhl fucking sucks and anyone associated with him being a major league player deserves to feel my fucking pain. Three walks and five runs (four earned) just to get three damn players out -- goddamn piece of shit...

Pros and Cons of Today's Loss

PRO:

Getting a grand slam off Garrett's bitch ass.

CONS:

Everything else, with special focus on how the team has inserted Polanco into the starting line-up in every game so far, to my knowledge. I don't know if it's all the injuries he's had throughout his career or what, but he hasn't even been close to a major league-caliber hitter in a couple years. Looks like a punch-drunk toddler at the plate now.

I was joking with a co-worker that it's probably for the best they have fan limitations this year. Outside of today's opening day, it's going to be hard enough to find 7500 who want to be there to endure the current product. I understand and agree that they need to blow things up and start from scratch because Huntington's last couple years were BRUTAL as far as his trading record went...but that doesn't make things any more fun to watch.

They're fortunate they have the best ballpark in the majors and good beer.

Yep, it's just too bad that an old Onion headline about the team is true again. Can't remember the exact phrasing, but it was about how the ballpark was demanding a trade to a better franchise. It was true in the years before the Cutch Revival Years and it's true again now.

Joe Musgrove pitched a no-hitter for San Diego last night. I'll remember that today while watching Mitch Keller walk 5 and give up 4 runs in 3 innings.

I mean, what is up with the franchise just utterly failing to develop great young pitching prospects? The only one they get a pass on is Taillon, because of his injuries and cancer issues. Other than that, Cole started out good, but stagnated until he was traded, upon which he became great; Glasnow totally sucked until he went to Tampa, where injury issues have been the only thing keeping him from Cy Young status and now Keller went from completely dominant in the minors to not being able to find the plate when he pitches in the majors.

When your ownership is cheap as hell, you simply can't afford to have that sort of track record with ace-caliber pitching prospects.

If there's one good thing about the Cubs, it's that they're actually capable of making the Pirates look like a good team.

Maybe they need  Kevin Koch to don the mascot outfit and lift the team up a bit?

Chad Kuhl gave up a home run to the first batter he faced. Which probably means he'll be a little bitch tonight and walk half the batters he faces because he's afraid to get beat up again. Joy.

And he walked two and gave up another run in the first. I'd be upset, but when something is so easy to predict, what's the point of caring?

They walked 13 and won 8-4. How is that even possible?

Well, looks like asking Mitch Keller for two straight respectable outings was a bit too much to ask. Which means it likely will be too much to ask for a three-game winning streak, too.

Ah well, for a team where the overall payroll can be counted out in pennies, getting 2/4 over one of the SPEND BIG TO WIN teams is something. Probably wind up as one of their greatest achievements this year.

Huh, the Pittsburgh Pirates: superior to the Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees. Suck it, bitches!

Have chance to reach .500 despite not being a good team AND have your best pitcher (so far) on the mound. Promptly get nearly no-hit by a team that had been in a four-game losing streak. Bonus points for the opposing pitcher being J.A. Happ, whom the Pirates picked up during the summer during one of their playoff years. And he was awesome down the stretch and then they didn't try to be competitive in attempting to sign him during the off-season. Which is when I learned that ownership wasn't serious in doing their part to keep the team in contention with the top ones in the league.

Oh, and Todd Frazier is 0-7 in two games. Looks like an over-the-hill guy who needs taken out and shot.

Huh, .500 on April 25. Wouldn't have expected that this year. Kudos on them for trying harder than Nutting ever will to pick up wins.

Above .500 now. And without Hayes for most of the season so far. While there is a good chance of a 10-50 slump at some point, it is a nice surprise to see them doing better than the teams most on here cheer for at any point after, say, the first two days of the season.
