Twitter has already purged a bunch of alt-right and conservative accounts not that long ago.

Youtube has been demonetizing vids that aren't even conservative - but if you don't march lockstep with ideologies, you're a target. They've also been unsubscribing people., I've actually been unsubscribed from Dave Rubin and another sub.

These companies have the right to do so, it is their property. But it's really not a wise choice in the long term. A lot of content publishers have simply been publishing on other sites such as Minds and Patreon.

Also, James Damore has a class action lawsuit against Google right now.

Steemit is another option I've seen pop up recently for content creators.

Meanwhile, Google and others (along with numerous tech bloggers) are busy shaming the Trump admin on net neutrality. Blocking viewpoints I disagree with is cool, but don't you fucking dare throttle me illegally downloading movies!

Yet another example that freedom and tolerance is real only to the extent it aligns with a specific ideology.

Twitter doesn't want to provide a platform to people of an opposing political view.

Masterpiece Cakeshop didn't want to bake a cake for the weddings of opposing sexual preferences.

Free market allows both.  You can say what you want, but the powers that be at Twitter have a right to keep you from saying it on their platform.

Am I missing something? Wasn’t the cake shop fined for not making a cake, which isn’t a free market?

No one is saying the playforms can’t do it, but I don’t see how it’s good for their business.

Huge difference.  And I still believe in the free market.  However, if you're wiping out conservative views and news then most people aren't even going to know it.  But just imagine the shitstorm if they were censoring liberal views, or GLBA (that would REALLY cause an uproar).

Case study we did in grad school - I think it was Amazon - talked about in some markets there is a size/scale/first mover advantage that effectively is a barrier to all other competition.  Basically the market can have one and only one Amazon.  I don't remember the logic or reasoning.  Point being, if Amazon is doing something shitty you can't expect the free market to fix it.  I think most people would agree Amazon (just an example here) needs to be broken-up to create competition.  But you could also argue the Amazon is a "good" monopoly, and even creates net consumer surplus....so breaking it up would actually be a bad thing to do.

Again, I just wish the net neutrality trolls would recognize THIS is what they are concerned about and it's actually happening.  Google, Facebook and Twitter are a far greater threat to the "free and open" internet than the cable companies everyone rages against.  Unfortunately, in their warped world these views they disagree with are bigoted, anti-science fake news and Google is doing the world a service blocking them.

"The thought police cracking down ..." in the OP.

Nobody is policing thought.  Nor are they ultimately policing speech.  They're just not allowing it on their platform.

The cake shop was indeed (wrongfully) fined.  It was indeed not free market.

Everything is defined by ideology.  You have states humping the 10th that would have no problem shoveling shit down the throats of other states.  The federal judiciary is a total joke who cultivates the law to fit their ideological beliefs.  How can an executive order by a duly elected president be ok but the reversal of such an order by a duly elected president be blocked?  Judge shop.

Yeah, I just don't know.  It sure seems like 20-30 years ago many things were far less political, even apolitical.  Science and economics, certainly.

For lack of a better place, Tim Cook just took Zuckerberg to the woodshed.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/mar/28/facebook-apple-tim-cook-zuckerberg-business-model

But here's something to think about QO:

Cook also said that it is past time to regulate Facebook. “I think the best regulation is no regulation, is self-regulation,” he said. “However, I think we’re beyond that here.”

The comment echoed remarks Cook made in Beijing last week, when he said: “I think that this certain situation is so dire and has become so large that probably some well-crafted regulation is necessary.”

More government regulation? How "crafty" should this government regulation be? How many other businesses will it effect, even if they aren't doing this sort of shenanigans? There's lots and lots of questions that can be asked about that issue.

I still can't get over how hardly anyone said squat when the Obama campaign did the same thing in 2012.

The regulatory question is an interesting one.  It does seem like the market should be able to handle this - I don't even know how, which is probably why regulation isn't going to help much here.

If I was Facebook, what I'd do is offer a solution via premium service that costs $10 a month.  And hardly anyone will pay them, so would be business as usual.  It's like crack - people can't live without it.  I think there was a 60 Minutes story about how various apps and platforms like Facebook are actually designed to get you addicted.

#deletefacebook, though I have my reservations that many people will leave (I'm close to pulling the plug). That said, there are alternatives on the market people can hop on. Or you could just not use social media at all.

I was with Cook when he said the best regulation is no regulation, then he lost me.

Facebook drives you right back in when you quit.  I chose to reactivate this past February (I was gone for about 2 years) to help push a fundraiser I was putting on. I found myself on there a lot to pass the time.  I loathe the place.

Is it just me, or is there a lot more of "govt please fix this!" because people refuse to take their business elsewhere and let the market do its thing?

I guess this is what you get from the generation raised in "safe spaces" - they're not going to change or adapt, ever....they're going to demand the govt make people and companies accomodate them.  In otherwords, snowflakes want to be a protected class.  Really does seem like a generation indoctrinated that govt is the solution to everything.

Actually they did; they spoke of their brilliance in using social media for campaign purposes and how it made them identifiable with the hipsters and millennials, yada, yada, yada ..........        but when Donald does it, its criminal.  :)

It started before then.  Health insurance is a prime example.

You used to pay for doctor visits out of pocket.  Many prescriptions, as well.  Insurance was purely for crises.  As such, insurance was cheaper, and doctors and pharmaceutical companies needed to find ways to be competitive in such a world, because they couldn't just lazily bill the insurance company who, of course, then passes on the cost to consumers.

But enough people liked the idea of just paying their insurance premiums and having the insurance company take care of the rest for them, somehow not connecting the dots that it would increase the cost of providing insurance and lessen the disincentive of upping cost of routine care, as well as increasing the cost of providing care, because of the additional infrastructure needed to deal with insurance companies.

People wonder why healthcare and insurance are expensive.  It's because of shit like this.  People wanting someone else to take care of anything they don't like.

Similar case can be made for loans of any variety (student, CC, auto, etc).  People agree to the terms and then bitch that someone needs to fix the financing industry because they don't like the fact that they have to fulfill their end of the agreement.
