Explain this one to me. Cancer is the second leading cause of death and lung cancer is the most common. How do you get lung cancer? A small percentage get it environmentally, but by and large it's from smoking.

It's hard to pin down how many deaths are attributable indirectly to diabetes and obesity (i.e. a good number of heart and stroke-related deaths are), but some estimates put DIRECT deaths third behind heart disease and cancer....and so it could quite possibly be number one if we could calculate the indirect contributory causes.

And while lung cancer is maybe 75% of all cancer deaths probably only half of those cases are attributable to tobacco (a lot of people who never smoked get cancer, even lung cancer).

Also, we can argue a good number of people abusing tobacco and alcohol are obese, and also have diabetes.  So the risks are confounded.  However, there's definitely a case that obesity and diabetes cause more deaths than tobacco and alcohol.  And I'm pretty sure without the tobacco and alcohol those people will still be obese and diabetic.

conversely, it's hard to pin down how many people are diabetic and/or overweight due to excessive sugar consumption. there's other factors at hand.

by your logic, we should also tax foods that contain excessive salt because it leads to high blood pressure.

Stop being an ignorant retard and GOOGLE

Granted, this will require multiple google searches and intelligent reading to understand how many deaths should be attributed to tobacco use.  But if you care not to be stupid, you can probably do it.

There is not conclusive research linking dietary sodium and high blood pressure.

Try again.

How is dietary sodium different from regular sodium, which is often used as a preservative in foods?

Taxing a nutrient dense food like gatorade (milk has sugar in it also, they gonna tax that?)  is stupid.

Jesus.  You are a health educator and don't know gatorade is nothing but sugar water?

I agree with this theory.  Not sure how to prove except walk through Walmart and see all the type2 on scooters.

you are an idiot if you dont unerstand that there are electrolytes in it and also the sugar to fluid concetration is at the proper % to allow for absorbtion without a large insulin response.  Not to mention the type of sugars used.

I am not going to explain any further to you or anyone else if you think I am stupid.  Just keep drinking powerade you idiot.

This is awesome.  Liquid absorption of sugar is the worst.  Type of sugar?  I only drink water, black coffee unless I know I am harming my body with alcohol infrequently.  Tell me more.

Good for you.  I am sure with your lack of high intensity exercise.....you don't need to worry about what Gatorade does.  Thanks for playing along.

It is to everyone else who is not retarded.  You've demonstrated you don't understand the concept of dietary sodium.  And many other things.

You literally are too stupid to discuss this because you don't even understand what dietary sodium means.  I imagine you're banging your head against a salt rock.

That really clears it up. Thanks.

All-in on the sodium and sugar tax.

Not a fan.

When are cooking oils going to be taxed like this? Butter?

Will these types of taxes also be applied to carbohydrates in the future? After all, many people don't burn off the carbs they eat, not even close.
There goes the sales of corn and peas!

As much as sugar in general is the worst form of calories (fats and proteins are better), Spock is right. The type of sugar does make a difference.

Powerade and pretty much all pop/soda use high fructose corn syrup which is much worse for you than regular sugar (sucrose).

Gatorade uses sucrose, which while not good for you, it is better for you than High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Gatorade is crap.  Water is life.  99% of workouts just need post water.  No need for anything beyond fruit if you have the pass out/dizzy 1% workout that might rarely occur.

I can never understand the people who drink gatorade casually. Especially the fruit punch. That stuff is garbage.

I'll drink it every once in a while to help with a hangover, but only if I have to be out running errands and can grab a bottle easily. I miss Lemon Ice.

Correct.  I will not subscribe to bro science.  There is not a need for sucrose or dextrose.
