Rich PerrineThe record for points in a game is actually by Medina when they beat Spencer 165-0! Check out the O.H.S.A.A record book I also have some games that are not in the record book in which a team scored over 100 points in a game.

Rich PerrineNot all schools that shutout all of their opponents in a season won every game, some had one or more ties. One example was the Marion Harding team of 1941. The Presidents went 6-0-2 and outscored their opponents 176-0. Bill Williams coached the team during this season and in consecutive weeks the Presidents tied Mount Vernon and Lima Central 0-0. From 1939-1942 Marion Harding went 29-1-3 including a 27 game unbeaten streak, they also shutout 21 of their 33 opponents. The Presidents beat Cleveland John Marshall (35-0), Toledo Woodward (6-0) then tied Mount Vernon (0-0) and Lima Central (0-0) then beat Ashland (12-0), Bucyrus (38-0), Shelby (19-0) and Galion (66-0)

Rich PerrineHere is my seventh school that went through at least an eight game season without allowing a point, Steubenville High School 1930. According to the O.H.S.A.A record book Steubenville hols the record for consecutive shutouts with 17. The streak began in 1929 and ran through the 1931 season. The 1930 season brought 3 huge challenges in consecutive weeks. First came Canton McKinley, followed by Dayton Stivers and then a first ever meeting with Massillon Washington. Coach Charlie Cartledge thought they might "take one on the chin" from Dayton Stivers, but Steubenville managed a 6-0 win. They finished the season with a 63-0 win over Ashtabula. Here are the results for the season, Big Red beat Pittsburgh (Pa.) Oliver (39-0), Allegheny (Pa.) (58-0), Columbus Central (45-0), Canton McKinley (7-0), Dayton Stivers (6-0), Massillon Washington (19-0), Youngstown Chaney (7-0), Columbus Aquinas (33-0) and Ashtabula (63-0)

Rich PerrineThe eighth school that went through a season without allowing a point for a minimum of eight games was Bexley High School. Between 1940 and 1942 Coach Carlton Smith led the Lions to a record of 22-2-1. In 1940 Bexley shutout all nine of their opponents and then shutout Worthington High School 25-0 to begin the 1941 season. The only blemishes on their record came at the hands of Washington Court House (0-2-1). During the 1940 season Bexley outscored their opponents 199-0. Here are the results of the season,Worthington (19-0), Logan (6-0), Columbus Holy Rosary (20-0), Grandview (14-0), Delaware (44-0), Upper Arlington (27-0), Columbus Academy (24-0), Westerville (39-0), Washington Court House (0-0),

After a first week 6-0 win over Circleville, Columbus Holy Rosary ran off six consecutive victories of over 50 points. In the final week they faced an undefeated Columbus University School and won handily 20-0. Here are the results Columbus Holy Rosary beat Circleville (6-0), Reynoldsburg (52-0), Columbus Academy (50-0), Columbus Hamilton Township (64-0), New Albany (52-0), Dublin (61-0), Columbus St. Mary (50-0) and Columbus University School (20-0).

Rich PerrineI guess I cannot count, this is school number nine in the schools that went through the season without allowing a point. I would like to thank the staff at the Bradford Library for their help with this information. I found reference to this season on line and the staff at the library gave me this information out of one of the books there. Under Coach Mr. Morrissey, the Railroaders went through the 1927 season 9-0 and outscored their opponents 274-0. Bradford beat West Milton 68-0 and Versailles 59-0 in the final two weeks. Here are the results for the season. Bradford beat Versailles (20-0), Greeenville (18-0), Celina (36-0), Tipp City (13-0), Dayton Fairmont (27-0), Arcanum (20-0), Sidney (13-0), West Milton (68-0) and Versailles (59-0). They did play Versailles twice that year and back the two games with one team were not uncommon.

Rich PerrineThe tenth school that went through the season without a point was Forest High School. I would like to thank Ronald Marvin at the Hardin County Historical Society for this information. In 1932 Forest High School had nine games scheduled, but bad weather forced the cancellation of the last game with Ada. The second game was supposed to be with Waynesfield, but they dropped football and The Ohio School for the Deaf was scheduled instead. Forest was led by Coach D. Ray Baum to a 7-0-1 record, the only tie was with The Ohio School for the Deaf. Here are the results for the season. Forest shutout Kenton (6-0), The Ohio School for the Deaf (0-0), Richwood (32-0), Woodstock (71-0), Mount Gilead (13-0), LaRue (19-0), Plain City (0-0), Mechanicsburg (32-0)

Rich PerrineI mentioned that Cincinnati Wyoming went through two seasons without allowing a point. Cory-Rawson has also turned the trick twice. The first being in 1952 and the second being in 1968. In 1952 under the direction of Coach Miller Fink the Hornets outscored their opponents 284-0. Cory-Rawson scored over 30 points in 6 of their 8 games. Here are the teams they beat, Paulding (49-0), Liberty (52-0), Vanlue (39-0), Mt. Blanchard (34-0), Van Buren (49-0), Arlington (14-0), McComb (6-0), and Arcadia (41-0). I will put the 1968 team in next week.

Rich PerrineNot to be outdone by the 1952 team the 1968 Cory-Rawson squad went 9-0 and outscored their opponents 338-0. This group of Hornets was led by Coach Jim Berry. Rich PerrineIn 1939 Maumee High School went through an eight game schedule without allowing a point. Maumee High School actually had a string of thirteen consecutive shutouts from 1938-1940. The streak began with a 25-0 win over Toledo Whitmer in game six of the 1938 season and continued through week two of the 1940 season after an 18-0 win over Holland High School. The coach of this team was Earl Davidson. Maumee went 6-0-2 this season including back-to-back 0-0 ties with Wayne High School and Delta High School. Under the direction of Coach Paul Ponzuric the Bulldogs outscored their opponents 377-0. This broke the record for points in a season which Bluffton had set in 1930 when they scored 346 points. Elida scored over 60 points three times including an 81-0 win over Paulding. Here are the scores for the season, Elida beat Forest (13-0), Lima Shawnee (20-0), Maria Stein (47-0), Rockford (13-0), Arcadia (77-0), Delphos Jefferson (25-0), Columbus Grove (60-0), Paulding (81-0) and Coldwater (41-0).

Rich PerrineIn my original list of teams that did not allow a point during a season, I left off one team that I have information on. The team I left off was the Mentor High School team of 1940. It started off simply enough with a 6-0 win over Fairport. Over the following seven weeks the Cardinals shutout all of their opponents, for an 8-0 record and outscoring their opponents by a total of 195-0. Mentor was led by Coach Edward Masonbrink. Here are the results for the year,Mentor beat Fairport (6-0), Orange (20-0), Chagrin Falls (26-0), Perry (28-0), Madison (19-0), Chardon (40-0), East Cleveland Shaw Reserves (33-0) and Willoughby (13-0).

Rich PerrineThe last school on my list of teams that went through the season without allowing a point is Portsmouth Notre Dame. As far as I know, this is the last team to go through the regular season without allowing any points. In 1987 the Titans, led by Coach Randy Martin, out scored their 318-0 in their ten regular season games. Their closest game was a 7-0 win over Minford in week 2. Unfortunately they lost their first round playoff game to Grandview. Here are the results of the season. Portsmouth Notre Dame beat Chesapeake (27-0), Minford (7-0), Fort Gay (W.Va.) (32-0), MacArthur Vinton County (28-0), Franklin Furnace Green (34-0), Portsmouth East (14-0), Lucasville Valley (29-0), Ironton St. Joseph (39-0), McDermott Northwest (39-0) and South Point (59-0). If I find any more schools I will add them at a later date.

Rich PerrineI have focused on teams that did not allow a point during the season, however I did find one team that played 8 games that did not SCORE a point during a season. This team did not have any forfeits and they had a coach in his fourteenth and final season with the school. Again there may be other schools that have don this, but so far I have found one. The East Cleveland Shaw Cardinals failed to score a single point during the 1935 season. Coach John Snavely stepped down after this season. East Cleveland Shaw lost to Cleveland East (29-0), Massillon (66-0), Cleveland Collinwood (33-0), Elyria (32-0), Youngstown Rayen (25-0), Lorain (70-0), Lakewood (33-0) and Cleveland Heights (14-0)
