Ohio High School Football History

  • Rich Perrine
I have been researching high school football on my own for about nine years. My idea is to have one giant database for all of the schools currently playing. I currently have over 100,000 scores in my database. I would like to do this to preserve the history of our schools. I have found some facts I would like to share with everyone that I have uncovered in my research. I have found 19 teams that went through at least an eight game season without allowing a point. I found one team that has a 40+ game unbeaten streak that is not in the O.H.S.A.A record book. I found one team that did not score a point during a season and they did not have any forfeits. If anyone is interested please let me know

    Good for you.

As far as records go..........especially many, many years ago if it was never presented to the OHSAA it very well could not be in their record books.

Some records have been really hard to find. There are a few schools that did not print yearbooks during the first world war and some towns did not have newspapers and reported to other towns newspapers

Sounds like you know your ancient HS football history pretty well.

So you must be well versed from the time Massillon can claim their championships.....

Did you know that in 1939 we had at least 3 future hall-of-fame coaches leading high school teams? Paul Brown was at Massillon Washington, Woody Hayes was at New Philadelphia and Wilbur "Weeb" Ewbank was at Oxford McGuffey Foundation High School. I am still learning about all of the high schools and their championship years. There were the great Fostoria teams during the first quarter of the 20th century,Massillons' great teams from the Paul Brown era through the early 1970's, the rise of the Cincinnati teams during the 70's and 80's and the dominance of Cleveland St. Ignatius during the 90's and 2000's. Those are just the big schools I am still learning about all of the other schools as well.

I would like to post my file. Right now my file is big. It includes wins, losses, ties, coaches name(if available) points for, points allowed and shutouts. I also have a file for 60+ point games, playoff games, coaches results by year, game by game results, and results against each school.

I read somewhere that a 1920's Massillon team had gone unscored upon and actually beat kent St one year? Thought that was pretty funny.

I am not trying to leave anyone out. I am still learning about everyone. My alma mater has won four state titles and I know other schools have been really good over different stretches. Newark Catholic, Coldwater, Clarksville Clinton-Massie, Cincinnati Wyoming, Germantown Valley View, Canton McKinley and the list goes on. I just keep finding out things I did not know. I really like finding out information about everyone.

During the early days of football high schools played local college teams. The college teams were generally the second team or the freshmen team. I have found Ashland College, Massillon Business College, Mount Union and other colleges that played high school teams.

Here is an example of one the schools that went through a season without allowing a point. I found a reference to this season on line, then I found the results in the 1941 Cincinnati Enquirer. Cincinnati Wyoming High School 1941. Cincinnati Wyoming has had two seasons in which they did not allow a point. The first coming in 1941 and then again in 1962. During the 1941 season the Cowboys were led by head coach William Jurkovic to an 8-0 record outscoring their opponents 181-0. The closest game was a second week showdown with Cincinnati Walnut Hills. Following the close of the season Cincinnati Wyoming tried to secure a post season game, but did not find a willing opponent. Here are the results of the season. They beat the Middletown Reserves (34-0), Cincinnati Walnut Hills (6-0), Lockland (14-0), Oxford McGuffey (20-0), Reading (26-0), Dayton Oakwood (30-0), Hartwell (38-0) and Cincinnati North College Hill (13-)

Thanks. Here is another example of a school that did not allow a point in a season. I previously mentioned The 1941 Cincinnati Wyoming season here is their 1962 season. In 1962 the Cincinnati Wyoming Cowboys had their second season without allowing a point. Under coach Bob Lewis the Cowboys outscored their opponents 446-0, including a 78-0 win over Cincinnati Deer Park and a 68-0 win over Cincinnati Lockland in consecutive weeks. The Cowboys had a 43 game unbeaten streak from 1961-1965 including three consecutive 10-0 seasons. I found the reference to this season in the O.H.S.A.A. record book and then the seasons results in the 1962 Cincinnati Enquirer. In 1962 The Cowboys beat Cincinnati Norwood (44-0), Cincinnati Woodward (18-0), Cincinnati Mariemont (28-0), DePorres (51-0), Cincinnati Mt. Healthy (35-0), Cincinnati Greenhills (44-0), Reading (34-0), Cincinnati Deer Park (78-0), Cincinnati Lockland (68-0) and Cincinnati North College Hill (46-0)

I would like to congratulate Millersport on their victory and I would like to remind people of how good Millersport was at one time. Millersport High School had a four year run from 1963-1966 in which they went 39-1. During this span they had a 19 game winning streak and a 20 game winning streak and they shutout 22 of their 40 opponents. During the 1965 season, under Coach George Murphy, the Lakers outscored their opponents 278-0. Their closest games were a 6-0 win over Zanesville Rosecrans and a 14-0 win over an undefeated Lancaster Fenwick (now Fisher Catholic) in the last game of the season. Leading 6-0 in the fourth quarter and Lancaster Fenwick driving, Millersport forced a turnover and the drove for the final touchdown. The Lakers beat Thornville Sheridan (42-0), Newark Catholic (30-0), Zanesville Rosecrans (6-0), Amanda Clearcreek (42-0), Fairport (36-0), Fairfield Union (22-0), Bloom Carroll (34-0), Liberty Union (24-0), Berne Union (28-0) and Lancaster Fenwick (14-0)

I could see how a good HS team could beat a JV college team from a small college team especially early in a season.

I am looking for scores for a couple of schools who went through at least an eight game season without allowing a point. The two schools are Salem High School (1899) and Cleveland Heights (1929). Both of these teams had at least one tie. I believe Salem tied Mount Union College. probably their second team. If anyone has these scores let me know. Right now the earliest school I know of is the 1912 Fostoria team who outscored their opponents 596-0. This team still has the highest scoring average in a season with a 74.5 points per game average. They scored over 100 points in a game twice that season.

I stated that I have information on 19 schools that went through at least an eight game season without allowing a point. So far I have posted Cincinnati Wyoming (1941,1962), Millersport (1965) and Fostoria (1912). This time I am going to tell you about a school that no longer is playing. Oxford McGuffey Foundation High School. From 1936-1940 Oxford McGuffey Foundation went 44-5 with 31 Shutouts. The Green Devils had a streak of 21 consecutive wins from the last game of 1935 to the first game of 1938. During this streak they shutout 14 consecutive opponents, eight during the 1936 season and the first six games of 1937. The head coach was Wilbur "Weeb" Ewbank. Coach Ewbank went on to coach in the N.F.L. and led the New York Jets to victory over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl 3
