Rozum and the 2014 Campbell Memorial Red Devils.

there are almost always exceptions to the rule. I feel as if this could be one. A language barrier isnt going to really affect you until say.. the third grade anyways?
and no, if he were at mooney i wouldnt care since they have 5 witzowskis on the roster.

    I try...

Is he talented? Yes. 1st team All District, 3rd team All State. 1500+ yards combined rushing and recieving last year (1383 on the ground, and I think 178 receiving on 17 catches) and 11 touchdowns. In 12 games. You can chalk a lot of that up to the offensive line last year (one of the best offensive lines in the last 25-30 years). Plus a 3 year starter at fullback.

Is he D1 calibur? Probably not... D3 or D2, if he even goes on to play in college.

Would he be expected to carry the team on his back like Stewart did a couple years ago? Absolutely not. Probably around 15 carries a game, would be my guess. He's tough, but he's not going to carry 3 guys on his back right up the gut 20-25 times a game for 7 yards a pop. They'd probably still play at least 3 different running backs, just like they did last year (when he was the starter). He is a play maker, but there's 2 or 3 other backs that I believe could get the job done, too.

So why do I care if he's eligible? Because he's a good kid and he deserves to play. Plain and simple.

I knew that was a possibility. Still, it just strengthens the argument. Imagine you're a little kid. Right before you start Kindergarten, you move 4500 miles across the world to a new country. Then when you start school, everything is in an entirely different language. A language that you're expected to already know, and be your primary language.

Do a quick Google search for "Polish education." They start Kindergarten around age 5 or 6, go to Kindergarten for a year or 2, and go on to first grade around age 7. Polish kids are required to learn a secondary language (starting in 1st grade, I'm assuming), English being the most popular. If Luke didn't start school until he came to the United States, he wouldn't have received any formal education in English until he left Poland.

I agree. It's not the same as a learning disability. It's still a challenge.

I do think that if his appeal fails, it'll be because he started school here. I don't think it'd be fair... but it's possible.

His size and how he might contribute to pushing struthers over the top. It wont happen because of the stipulation. K to second. Sorry but rules are rules. My son was just told no. So he accepted it. And he was held back in first. But his ability far out ways the rules. He is a best on D. So he is getting a job till collage.
No it's K through 3rd. It says it clearly in this years OHSAA by laws.
  • soupcitysoldier
So the appeal was denied. When will struthers know if he can play?

Wow when we did it we were told that it was k to 2nd.. That was told to me on the phone when i spoke to the administrator when he called 2 months ago. We are still waiting on a definite answer. But it won't matter he already told the coach to shove it in so many words. But if somehow there is a chance to play he said he might consider either Edison or Big Red. I would go with Edison cause i don't like the idea of him going to school or playing for Big red.

So either way good luck. i see nothing wrong with you guy playing. just as long as its not braking the rules. Or give a real unfair advantage to the team that otherwise would have not benefited with him not on or off the team.:RpS_flapper:

I do remember Coach Rozum preferring to not dress any freshmen on the varsity squad during his past years as head coach. If he has stuck to that idea, I believe 37 is a good number of kids out for varsity football. I'm interested to see how much stronger the kids have gotten since Rozum took over the offseason conditioning program. That's definitely something the kids would have to buy into because a glaring weakness on Campbell teams over the past several years was their lack of being physically strong and in shape to play four quarters on both sides of the ball. That meant the kids weren't going to lifting or lifting very little when they were. And those that did attend were not using proper technique when lifting in the weightroom. And that weakness always showed during games. Coach Rozum has always very demanding in that weightroom. Rozum also counts on his seniors to be leaders. This will be an interesting season for Campbell football.
  • soupcitysoldier
That number includes 5 freshmen one of which will play significantly.

I think its a great thing that Coach Rozum is back and I think over time his presence will be felt in a positive way, but they are in for a hard year here. I can't objectively look at their schedule and say that should be the favorite going into any games except for Champion and Newton Falls. This could be a 3-7 or at best 4-6 year but most people I have talked to expect it to take a while to turn around.

If Rozum is in for the long haul then i would expect all of the fans to be in it too. Its gonna take a year or two to start seeing what was once that made campbell a contender every year and as a area team to watch out for. This year is a weed them out year i would think. i can promise you that players that think they can run the squad and not show up for doubles and think they will get away with it on friday have another thing coming. I fear that it might push Rozum over the edge and just walk away cause these are not the same dedicated kids he had his first 3 go arounds. But if they just bite or nibble a little it might turn around a lot lot faster. The talent is always there and Rozum always recruits and has his junior and seniors talking to people about coming out! But the seniors this year i feel are gonna make or break this year. I dont have much faith in the seniors buying in this year! They are 3 years of getting away and watching the last 3 senior classes getting a free pass.. If campbell buys into Rozums plan we could just hang around in a lot of games and might just pull 1 or 2 out. And i think they could go 4-6 to 6-4. if not then wow gonna be hard to win more than 3 games.

How long is the coach back for? anyone know?

These kids during the season are unlike any hes coahced before. Give it time beforen the kids are bashing him online like they did with Mick
  • reddevil90
Well he put his John Hancock on a long term contract from what i was told. If anyone knows for sure please correct me if im wrong! He knows all the kids anyways. he was the assistant principal in the school. he has a good relationship with the kids. so i don't expect to many problems going forward. But i'm sure he will be tested by some of the players that think they're crap don't stink. And i don't feel one bit bad for what's in store for any of them. he has a good bunch of kids around him. Just there is going to be a few bad apples that will test his patients.

But the role will be reversed also. Those kids have not seen the likes of a coach like Rozum. And like i said i will not feel one bit bad for any that think this is their team only and can sit talk on their phones when ever where ever they like and practise whenever!!!.

    5-5 at best...

Struthers, L... I'm not going to get into it... but I don't think it will be pretty.
South Range, L... another one that could get ugly.
Liberty, L... does Campbell have an answer for Bowden? I don't think so.
Lakeview, L... Lakeview is my pick to win the AAC: National. I think they'll be right in the mix for a playoff spot again. Pavlansky is a really good coach, and I think Moreno will have a monster year. Same goes for Mannella. Most importantly, Lakeview is a solid team.
Brookfield, L... of all the games Campbell is expected to lose, I think this is the one they have the best chance of winning. Brookfield is a more established team, so I give them the edge. The Brookfield fans were saying that the Junior class could be just as good, if not better than the Quinlan/Mosora class of a couple years ago.

Champion, W... Champion never seems to be able to turn the corner. Campbell has their number.
Newton Falls, W... Newton Falls is my pick to finish last in the AAC: National.

Girard, IDK... probably a loss. Girard loses their leading rusher, and I think their QB and leading receiver, as well. And they have a new head coach taking over. I think Girard could be in a rebuilding phase... maybe Campbell could pull the upset?
Jefferson Area, IDK... Jefferson can be scrappy... Campbell has had their number, though.
LaBrae, IDK... LaBrae is tough to gage. Campbell usually plays them tough.

My biggest concern would be Rozum losing the team if Campbell starts out 0-4 (the first 4 games being against Struthers, South Range, Brookfield, and Girard). If Campbell is poised for a 4-6 season, will the kids (Seniors especially) be willing to accept and embrace being the building block that bridges Campbell Football to better days ahead? While I could definitely see Campbell starting out 0-4, I can also see them finishing 4-2 and setting the stage for an exciting 2015 season.

That sounds about right as far as what games they should be favored. I don't think Struthers fans can have an appreciation of Rozum's style of coaching. No offense to you guys but he won't care if he's down to 11 guys by the first game or tenth game. They'll also be superbly conditioned or they won't last until the first game. I think people outside of Campbell are gonna be shocked by the team he puts on the field. They might not win many games but they'll be fun to watch. Numbers are overrated in high school ball anyway. We played for a state championship with around 28 guys. Conditioning is everything.

I must admit I kind of giggle when I hear the "Rozum doesnt know what hes getting himself into" talk, or even will he be able to handle these kids! The cupboard is bare he cant win with this group!!! Listen I dont know what will happen but if you guys think for one minute Rozum is in over his head its wishful thinking. When Rozum took over in 1978 they were 3-45-1 the previous 5 seasons!!!!!! Say that out loud!!! Do you think for one minute he cant handle this? What wiill happen if they start losing?! I know many people think Rozum has never lost a game but it did take him some time to build up a dominant team. Lets look at his first years back. 1979 he goes 5-4 and you guys already know what they did before that. 1985 he comes back they go 8-2 and were 3-6-1 the previous year. 1999 he comes back they go 10-1 and they 4-6 the previous year. Am I making a prediction? No. I am just laughing a bit at the idea that Rozum is in over his head. Yes the kids arent the same, but from what I have seen they have a great group of kids that are working hard. Will there be causalities? Of course. You know what else isnt the same as back in the day? The conference. This is an extremely weak conference. This isnt the MVC or SVC. I disagree with the 3 win prediction. They won 3 last year, and I think they can pass that. I also disagree with the statement that the South Range game will be ugly. BTrev dont be afraid to make a score prediction of the Campbell/Struthers game. Unless you think that by some stroke of God there can be an upset in that game. Be confident in your team. 5 wins for the Devils this year.

Well said soup. I too am amazed when I hear statements like the ones you mention above. If Coach Rozum didn't think it would be worth his time and effort to return to coaching at Campbell Memorial, he wouldn't have. He knows exactly what he is doing. He's got a good group of assistants working with him too. No, I will not mention any names.

ok i'll give you all a revised prediction for what its worth. Talked to a few kids on the team and they seem to like Ed.

    Struthers, L. 21-0
South Range, L but would love to see the W here.
Liberty, L but Campbell can win this one too. Its not impossible, plus liberty isnt all that. 17-7
Lakeview, L. This could be the best team they've had in years.
Brookfield, L. Brookfield is going to be tough for a few years to come. Does CMHS have it this season? I dont think yet.

Champion, W. Do i need to say more
    Newton Falls.. w... really?

Girard, L. Girard is going to be very good from what i'm hearing. Talent a plenty
Jefferson Area, W. I'll never pick a team up there to win against a ytown team.
LaBrae, w. Labrae will be improved but by week 10 i think cmhs will be a lot better from where they are in week 1.

Few things: 1990 was a very long time ago. No chance in hell would they make the state title game with only 28 guys ever again. And you're right. We really don't care how many kids play on their team, but i do also like to see CMHS win (Playoff Points)
I hope they really are conditioned but you must understand the lack of belief from people on the outside based on the last three years or so. Attitudes can be changed but can work ethics?

Brookfield. Girard, and Lakeview are going to be good for years. Wouldnt call it a bad conference.
  • soupcitysoldier
All saying is ask anyone from Campbell or strut hers for that matter that played in the SVC or MVC about the level of talent in this conference and I think they'll agree. It's a decent conference but Rozum has been through more daunting conferences and been successful. With the smallest school in those conferences most of the time. My point...Rozum can handle this. His commitment is greater than 5 years from what I hear.
  • soupcitysoldier
Also Campbell has had one losing season in six years and is three years removed from back to back conference championships. So lets not be too short sighted.

Soup, I remember that back in the mid to latter 70's CMHS went 3 seasons w/out a win. Do you (or anyone else out there) recall who they finally beat to end that streak. Thanks.
