All-American Conference expansion

Why drive all the way down there to play good competition? Good if not better competition is closer to us anyways. Don't want all the negatvity they bring into hs football in our cities, conferences.. etc. HS football isnt all about money or winning. Maybe some of you "big red" folks should realize that.

If Youngstown area schools wanted bigger crowds and better competition, I am sure Fitch, Boardman, Harding, Ursuline, and Mooney would be more than happy to sign that contract.

Those were long trips, but we had a great time. High school kids need to get out of their communities and see how the rest of the world lives.
This isn't the 60's. Diesel is quite costly at over $4 a gallon. A 2 hour haul isn't cheap.

Plus, I don't think I'd want my high schooler seeing how the Steubenville community lives.

We don't have to realize anything. Our schedule gives us a lot of money and many Harbin points. Our fans are happy. So what's your problem?

Outside the Lines had a story on Big Red this morning. It is disturbing how many people there are still defending what went on there.

    FIFY.

I'd wait and see if they are even able to schedule a full schedule before you talk about what their schedule brings in.

An article in the Youngstown Vindicator last week had the athletic director at Steubenville, Fred Heatherington, stating that he has no knowledge of Big Red applying to join the AAC.......that it was all Reno's doing because he runs the football program. Reno must have some big coconuts to go over the head of his A.D.

That's all you care about. That's why. Unfortunately you proved this just now.

If it is true that Youngstown Christian applied I'd imagine JFK should follow their lead. Still, I have serious doubts that the existing schools will accept private institutions.

Why would they even apply up here? No conferences want them down there? Don't you think theres a reason for all of that? Plus, whats our motivation to drive all the way down to Steubenville... Hopefully the AAC says no. Not worth it
I have been following Big Red football since the 1950's, and I can assure you that Big Red people have never caused problems in anyone else's stadium in all those years. We bring big crowds, and we are very respectable regardless of whether we win or loss. Just ask the people from Massillon. We have played there twice in the past three years and lost both games. We took thousands of people with us and we caused no problems whatsoever.

Before you attack us, make sure you know your facts.

Your fans could be model attendees and it would be a disgrace to host them for many, many years.

Nobody cares about the utopia you THINK you grew up in. Nobody wants anything to do with your convict team, corrupt town or Coach Kilmer.

Take your crap to another thread. You aren't relevant anymore.

I never claimed it was Utopia. It was simply a good town to grow up in.

I'm afraid I am relevant. I am trying in my own small way to clean up the town. If that doesn't make me relevant, then I don't know what can. Instead of being a butthead, why don't you do something to help me? Contact the superintendent and tell him to get rid of Reno. Write a letter to the Herald Star in support of my position. Do something, but don't just sit there on your fat butt and criticize me. I will appreciate any help you can give me.

See i have had the unfortunate luck to have seen this town Steubenville for 8 years now. I grew up in a small town. Campbell is home to me and my family. I know a lot of people down here. The sad thing is most of the fans i hear talk about the situation are against the victim. And why apply for any conference Reno must know now he has no chance to fill the scheduled now after his team blunder. I would not be surprised that Reno might still be in hot water when all this is said and done. And another thing Reno wont play at rape valley 8 games a year. they will be lucky to have 6 games if not less. nobody will agree to play every year there. that is one thing that always burned my ass. How a team will go to extremes to stay home every game.

Steubenville has tried for years to get into a league that has mandatory scheduling. The OVAC does not have mandatory scheduling for football, of which Steubenville is a member and has been for years. Every time a vote is made for mandatory scheduling, the vote loses. The schools enjoy scheduling who they want and when. And a lot of them are attempting to avoid playing Steubenville (higher level) or Wheeling Central (lower level).

They applied for the ECOL a few years ago, but didn't want to join for all sports, because the cost of travel for non-Football sports would be too high with weekday trips to places like Marietta. It makes it easier to have a league. Steubenville was in the original AAC for years, and when that league dissolved, left them in the OVAC, basically as an independent. Of which almost every school in this immediate area is a member.

A few smaller schools created the Buckeye 8 (which is a league within a league), but that's probably going under as there's a lot of upheaval with member schools leaving. There's another league in the OVAC further south for small schools.

OVAC has 48 football playing schools broken up into 5 divisions. Top division is 5A, lowest is 1A, split by enrollment. The top four divisions have 10 teams each, and the bottom division has the remaining 8 teams. Steubenville qualifies as the 4A.

If there was mandatory scheduling in OVAC, this is the 'league' Steubenville would play in:

    Buckeye Local [D3]
    East Liverpool [D3]
    Harrison Central [D4]
    Martins Ferry [D4]
    Meadowbrook [D4]
    Oak Glen (WV) [D3]
    St. Clairsville [D4]
    Steubenville [D3]
    Union Local [D4]
    Weir (WV) [D3]

Now, if the OVAC went to mandatory scheduling, the league would probably break itself down into six divisions of 8, because mandating 9 of your 10 games would be a little much. Six divisions would mean 7 of your 10 games every year would be scheduled in advance. Which would be about average.

And this scheduling in the OVAC has been the same since the league's founding. When a team gets good, it becomes harder for them to schedule inside the OVAC.

Here's Wheeling Central Catholic's (OHSAA D6 equivalent) schedule last year:

Harrison Central (7-4) [D4] L (OVAC, Part of OVAC Kickoff at Wheeling Island Stadium)
Weirton Madonna (9-1) [D6] W (OVAC, traditional rival in the Holy War)
    Pittsburgh Westinghouse (PA) W
@ Wheeling Linsly (4-6) [D6] W (OVAC, private boarding school, played at WCC's home field)
    @ Magnolia (WV) (9-1) [D5] L (OVAC)
    Pittsburgh Allderdice (PA) W
@ Shadyside (10-1) [D6] L (OVAC, good school from Ohio that's been good for years)
    @ Mingo Central (WV) W
@ Caldwell (2-8) [D6] W (OVAC doormat filling their schedule with a home game)
@ Bishop Donahue (WV) (6-4) [D6] W (OVAC, traditional rival, private school just south of Wheeling)

Only difference with WCC, is that they pay to rent Wheeling Park's home field, and their crowds draw flies. Which is why when Wheeling Jesuit University upgrades their one stadium, WCC will start playing football there, even if the stadium would hold about 1500 total, rather than 10,000-seat Wheeling Island Stadium.
