Amen to that. Who would be the line coach?Old Rider;1424202 wrote:I agree about the line. However, lately the line situation really hasn't been about being undersized/oversized, we simply just don't have kids that know what the heII their doing! I watched some film with my brother a few times last year and it was sad how many missed blocking assignments we had even into week 7-8-9-10. I am also not a fan of the "zone" blocking scheme we use. It does nothing to create blocking angles because we dont cut block, reach, and rarely do we pull or trap...thats what a running game is built on and we don't do it! -

Great synopsys! I think you combine the "in the home" thing with a world that worships the easy way and you have a mixing pot for trouble. Everyone has a point, the town has changed, the world has changed, our expectations have changed and the kids are changing as well for many reasons. I think it would be harder to coach in todays world then EVER before!!! I know I wasn't in the weightroom as much as a lot of other guys but I played three sports. When I could I was in that room! I think we (kids on most of the teams I was on) had pretty good football IQ's and noses for the football? Some of that came with time on the field and some of it just dumb luck. I wonder how many of these kids today actually eat dinner together as a family? I KNOW we did at my house. I was so blessed, I had both my parents at the table and involved. I can't imagine trying to grow up in this world today without my pops. There is no question to me that all the factors mentioned on this little topic play a small role, but you add all those small factors in and you have a big hurdle. I swear I think coaching us was easy.... we would have done anything! All they had to do was say the word. I hope for a successful season for these young men, the lessons learned on the hardwood and field are lessons I carried with me the rest of my life. You guys all make good points, and even RR.nation has a point, that we made a playoff run just two years ago with white collar guys, I don't agree with him on coaching change, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. On the state of blue collar jobs in Orrville, I would venture to say Orrville has fared better than most communities, I tried to look that up that on bureau of labor statistics, and god bless anyone that can navigate that site, but if you are looking for a football team full of blue collar kids then call the travel agent and book your flight to china. I am sure someone on this site could find those stats, but I don't think it's as bad as you might think, at the yearly chamber dinner, I was floored how many companies have expanded (Ventrac, Will Burt, JLG,) or new companies have located here (that's why Mark Zook needs to post, he probably has those facts, so Old Rider or Red Rider1 go down the hall and interrupt his daily massage and tell him to post). With all that being said, and there are many issues that contribute, I feel the biggest issue is home life, or lack of it. There is some fine single parent homes and sometime things happen that are out their control , but ask a teacher about the level of support or discipline the kids gets at home, now you could blame that on low income housing, school levy's failing, main street turning into a row of duplexes as you come into town all of these are factors, but I feel it starts at home, to many fathers and sometime mothers not involved in their kids life's or involved in the wrong ways, (Johnny , did not get a trophy or Johnny did not get his fair share of shots or Johnny is better than Timmy he should get more playing time). I don't believe for one second that because John Moneim grinded teeth instead of castings that, had any bearing on Mason and how he turned out. Sports are a attitude, and if you don't teach Johnny that playing Xbox basketball does not actually make you a better shooter then that's on the parents, I know that's simplifying thing down and that there or other factors that come into play in bring a child up but it starts at home first, and a kid hardly has a fighting chance without the correct support or a kick in the butt sometimes. -

Great post and great question. I left Orrville in 1994 for the University of Akron where I chose to live instead Of commute. I was a young punk that was immature and went to school for one reason: to party! Boy did I party! I made mistakes, a lot of them but I learned from every one of them. Nobody took care of me, not mom and not dad. My dad bagged groceries at a grocery store and my mom didn't work. I paid $500 for my first car out of my own pocket and paid my way thru school. I consider myself successful today; i work for a good company and have my own business as well but it's because I wasn't afraid to take risks. Leaving Orrville for me was a risk but I never looked back! If I could ever convince my wife to leave from Jackson to Orrville it would be a done deal. I love that school, that town, and everything about it however I will not accept excuses ! They get u nowhere! I have a saying I use everyday: If you do things the way you have always done them then the results will ALWAYS be the same -sure talent isn't what it used to be, but If we Change nothing from last year in the way we run things or utilize what we do have then we will be 1-9 again!!Old Rider;1425897 wrote:I stayed because this is my town, my school, my employment, and I want my boys to be Red Riders! Why did you leave?
Nobody is feeling sorry for Orrville, its just the current state of the community. Norwayne had one tremendous year that they WILL NEVER REPEAT and you are saying we should be looking at their program as some sort of gold standard for football programs? NO
I am not writing this season off, nor is anyone else on this thread. I just stated facts about this team. We need an O-line and the offensive scheme needs to change. Yes, that is on the coach to do that, but let me repeat myself again...it is slim pickings. I talk to my brother almost daily about this and he has said over and over again that kids don't want to put in the effort that is required to be a good football player. We have a few, but thats it! -

Good post! I ask this question though: If the town is such a shithole and nobody wants to live there and there are no athletes in the school then why is the girls basketball team and girls volleyball team so successful? Didn't the baseball team make a deep run last year as well? Im Pretty sure the track team hasn't faired too badly over the years either. All these parents live in the same town yet seem to be successful every year ? Maybe RR1 has the answer he seems to have all the answersOld Rider;1425897 wrote:I stayed because this is my town, my school, my employment, and I want my boys to be Red Riders! Why did you leave?

5knotsNice to read a little chatter again. good stuff the last few pages. I wish someone had a magic pill to get us some more players. Kids need to work hard and do the best they can. Lay it all the line and you can hold your head high. Couple bye weeks in all the Big Ten schedules means I will get to see the riders a couple times this year. last year just got to see the Madison game and we dang near pulled that out! Go Riders.

RedRider1Sounds like the "Bryce transferring" thing may happen. Heard that dad got a job over in Canton & they're house shopping over that way.
Should know for sure in the next month or so. -

I hope Bryce does not think he is going to go to Canton and "Play" it would be a wake up call to him.RedRider1;1433271 wrote:Sounds like the "Bryce transferring" thing may happen. Heard that dad got a job over in Canton & they're house shopping over that way.

RedRider1(Soon to be) D5 to D1 would be a jump for anyone.
We've had a few kids make that jump (Zwick & DeWitz)...both QB's also.
Whatever ends up happening, i hope it works out for all parties. -
Old Rider
I just hope with the current state of our schools (levies not passing and such) that more kids don't jump ship to other local schools. I have also heard that a couple of varsity football coaches have stepped down, but that could be hear-say.RedRider1;1433271 wrote:Sounds like the "Bryce transferring" thing may happen. Just for fun...My early prediction for the football season is 2-8. -

I'm sure he realizes that he may not play at qb as they have a pretty decent qb currently. Unlike the situation he had to deal with this past season at that position.rrfan;1433283 wrote:I hope Bryce does not think he is going to go to Canton and "Play" it would be a wake up call to him. -

Why would the levy not passing effect a students decision to go to another school? Believe it or not, they have sufficient funds to keep the schools operating, don't be fooled with all of the "scare" tactics.Old Rider;1433512 wrote:I just hope with the current state of our schools (levies not passing and such) that more kids don't jump ship to other local schools. Or facts. Sure the schools will operate if the levy fails, but with reduced staff & services.
No scare tactics needed..just reality. Mr Ritchie would love to show you in black & white..not rumors, speculation or assumptions...where real cuts have already happened regardless of the outcome of this levy and where more cuts will be made if the levy fails.
Of course seeing the truth means you'd have to abandon assumptions & outright lies, easier just to keep heads in the sand & pretend we know more than those running our district.
Because someone has to be the enemy, right? If it ain't the football coach, or little Johnny's teacher, it has to be the eeeeevil school district misusing our money. -

No one's pretending to know more than the school district. If the schools have to operate with reduced staff and reduced funds, they aren't alone, unfortunately that's the world we live in. Who in the work force hasn't had additional responsibilities added to their job description due to staff reductions and financial cutbacks. No one's making anyone an "enemy"!RedRider1;1433827 wrote:Or facts. Sure the schools will operate if the levy fails, but with reduced staff & services.

What does that or the failure to pass the levy have to do with a student transferring to participate in sports? -
RedRider1If levy doesn't pass & as a result, athletic pay-to-play fees go up, that could prevent a kid from playing a sport, or cause them to look to neighboring districts where the fees aren't as high.
That's a valid reason, no?
I've heard of schools around here that its several hundred dollars per sport, per kid with no cap based on # of sports or # of kids. Imagine you have 3 kids & all play 2 or 3 sports. That's gets expensive real quick. -
Old Rider
Seriously??? You are the one that is "fooled". But you go ahead and vote "No" on the levy and see how it affects my kids...not yours...who are no longer in the system. I can't afford to pay the tax increase either, but I will for the good of our schools, the kids in this community, and the community as a whole!Series62;1433667 wrote:Why would the levy not passing effect a students decision to go to another school? If the levy fails and "pay to participate" fees increase as has been mentioned....that is how a levy affects a decision to stay in the district or not! -

So if McKinley finds a spot on the field for Bryce, will that be an example of playing favoritism? Dad will be in their system now...has to be favoritism?? Right??Series62;1433665 wrote:I'm sure he realizes that he may not play at qb as they have a pretty decent qb currently. Unlike the situation he had to deal with this past season at that position. -

If Bryce made the field for Mckinley it would be favoritism. Becasuse he is not good enough to play there. I would like to see Bryce be a Red Rider and be an impact player. If he chooses to go to McKinley I will wish him luck...he will need it.Old Rider;1434200 wrote:So if McKinley finds a spot on the field for Bryce, will that be an example of playing favoritism? I hereby decree that any reference to a kid that is poor in athletic ability from here on out be labeled as Timmy. Can I get a second to that motion.RedRider1;1434357 wrote:Johnny, Jimmy, Timmy, Mikey, Billy...all interchangeable. -
RedRider1Done...lets try it out...
"Little Timmy only gets to play because of bias & favoritism."
"Why should little Timmy work hard in practice if he's just going to sit the bench every Friday?"
.....I like it.
