Grove City Christian Offseason Football Thread

I do too my brother. I spoke with our AD the other day. He is getting calls from D2 schools, D3 schools. I agree with him that the program is not established enough to take on those caliber opponents. Once we make the playoffs a couple more times I think he will take on all comers. 2010 and 2011 are critical years to either establish a top-shelf program like yours or fade to average like so many programs who were too ambitious too early. I'll tell ya, the weight room is full and that in itself will perpetuate success. What age do NC and Bridgeport start their kids lifting weights?
  • bridgeport2001
Im not real sure what age they start lifting

I'll be interested to see who the AD schedules for the 3 open dates next season. With 4 weeks already filled with notoriously terrible teams(MC , CC , FCA & Fayette) will the defending region 23 champs fill those last 3 slots with quality teams or "gimmies"?

Do you take the chance and schedule two or three perennially good teams in those three weeks knowing that they may beat you and may keep the defending region 23 champs out of the playoffs or schedule three gimmies and pretty much guarantee a return trip to defend the region? Time will tell......

I don't think they need two pick up 2 or 3 quality teams , but they might want 2 pick up at least 1 quality team. Not really sure what DANVILLE , AND ZANESVILLE ROSECRANS return. These might be the best teams on your schedule next year

    SQUIRMYDOG
Do you have any info on what these teams have returning.

If memory serves me correct, Danville played a lot of sophomores against us. My concern with Danville right now is with their leadership. I hope they get a coach and a system established, or that program might be a mess again next year. Talent-wise they are returning plenty. They very well could be back. Tough call until they get their leadership on board and get behind him.
I know Rosecrans is losing Vincent Joseph, who is a tremendous character kid at QB, and their top running back. They played 3 rb's last year, so someone should step in. Austin Craig is an all-state caliber WR who is returning. They should be fine if they replace their QB and a couple of linemen. Their schedule is very similar to last year's with the addition of Fort Laramie. It will be tough for them to finish 8-2 again but they are a good program.
Here is what I would like to see with the remaining 3 games based on 2009 records....Bridgeport/Malvern/Shadyside caliber in case Rosecrans or Danville have problems......Southern/Beallsville/Trimble...to replace playoff borderline team like Youngstown Christian........Newark Catholic...we need to play them to get used to playing them. Since they aren't available, Hannibal River/Harvest Prep/South Gallia to tide us over.
GCC has the talent coming back, if everyone comes back, to finsh 9-1/8-2 and make the playoffs with this type of schedule.

ROSECRANS also pick up BRIDGEPORT week 4.

Alot of those teams you wrote down would be long road trips 4 you wouldn't they????
  • newarkcatholicfan
How many of the returing players willopt to go back to their own school?
Meaning those players that came in from the other area schools that are now open.

They are all staying. Like I said before, they transfers really fit in well. With all due respect to the Dawgs, GCC is the only school that has a realistic chance to make the playoffs. So GCC has a lot to offer a football player.
    Post count 58

We travel well. Away games were to Zanesvillex4(1hr), Franklin Furnace(2hrs), Marion Catholic(1.5 hrs), and Ashland(1.5hrs). A few of those games we had more fans than the home teams.
Malvern and Hannibal River(2hrs 45min) would probably be the farthest. Everyone else outside of Franklin/Licking counties are in the 1.5-2 hr range. Beallsville is appx 2hrs 15 mins.
  • bridgeport2001
Wish i could say the same thing but are fans don't travel that good at all.As soon as we get beat half the fans stop coming , But as soon as we make the playoffs we get all the bandwagons.
This is no lie i had a man come up 2 me when we had are home playoff game this year and ask what are record was he thought we where 6-0 , i had 2 tell him we here 9-1 and that we where in the first round of the playoffs.

We get no support from anyone around the valley alot of peaple down here just don't care about us. I really wish we had the support GCC has really think it would help us out alot, but it will never happen here.

Remember too that this was GCC's first year as a playoff qualifier. Everything was brand new and no one outside of the players and a few others had any idea GCC would go as far as they did. Who knows what's going to happen once expectations are raised. I can tell you our fans were far louder than ST Paul's. Someone on the other site commented that if they would have walked in the stadium with 3 minutes to go, they would have thought GCC was winning. I hope that spirit is preserved forever.
  • bridgeport2001
GCC has always had a good fan base , I remember when you made the trip down here you had a good bit of peaple and that was your first year of football and its like a 2 hour drive. If we had 2 come up there i don't think we would of had half those peaple.I think you will always have a good fan base and i think BRIDGEPORT will be the same 4 a long time.(sad but in my mind it's true)
Like i said before peaple just don't care that much about us (as you can see im prob the only BRIDGEPORT person on here that writes anything.) There may be a couple on the other site not sure tho.

I am not sure where the GCC posters are either. There was a lot of activity during the playoffs.

Call Jonathan Alder. Last I heard they have some open dates to fill in 2010.

That would be a quite a challenge. The drive would be a lot shorter. Sadly, JA has games scheduled for weeks 3-5 according to OHSAA. A game like that would certainly show the guys where they stand.
I was doing a little more digging into Danville today. I am changing my mind on them. They have all of their stars but 1 returning. They will be formidable next year, especially, as rumor has it, they bring back Coach Honabarger. He took them to the playoffs 5 of the 6 years he was there the first time.
  • Squirmydog
All of the transfers who were being counted on to contribute next season were spotted in the hallways today. That's a good sign. There is still no word on the openings for weeks 3-5. The banquet is this week. Hopefully the AD will have something for us then.

Jefferson Twp has been added for week 4. They are a D6 team with all of their stars returning. They are the smallest school in their conference, so their schedule is tough. Weeks 3 and 5 are close to being complete as well. I will update as info comes available.

week 1 @ DANVILLE moved up from week 3
week 2 MARION CATHOLIC same as last year
    week 3 open
    week 4 JEFFERSON TWP
    week 5 open
week 6 @TROY CHRISTIAN same as last year
week 7 @ CINCINNATI CHRISTIAN same as last year
week 8 BISHOP ROSECRANS same as last year
week 9 FAYETTE PERRY replaced pymatuning valley
week 10 FAIRFIELD CHRISTIAN ACADEMY same as last year
  • bridgeport2001
Got alittle info on JEFFERSON TWP 4 you.

Last year 4-6 one win was a forfeit but really lost the game , Another win was against a team that games don't count in the ohsaa and the other 2 teams where 3-17.
The last 5 years they have gone 10-38
Not sure if theres going 2 be many points from them next year.
  • Squirmydog
One thing my source told me about JT was they were looking to improve their scheduling. Their main problem is they are in a conference with D2-D4 teams. Looking at their roster, they should be a liitle better, but no, not too many points out of this one either. You and I both need to watch Rosecrans closely. They will have guys back, but the schedule includes 6 playoff quailiers and they have no seniors on the roster. They will be very dangerous if they finish 8-2 again, or they be 4-6 just as easily.
  • bridgeport2001
I agree we both need 2 watch out 4 the ROSECRANS.

Is jefferson Twp moving to a new football conference for 2010? In 2009 they played in the Metro Buckeye Conference for football only. The "football league" consisted of Lehman Catholic, Fort Loramie , Troy Christian , Jefferson Twp, Dayton Christian and Yellow Springs(all D6 schools except Dayton Christian-D5).

  • Squirmydog
I looked them up on Macattack Sports and they had JT in the Southwest Ohio Public League, which is all D1-D4 schools. So they are in the MBC for Football? That is far more reasonable for them. Thanks for clearing that up.

    2nd article down in link

    http://www.metrobuckeyesports.com/index.aspx

"2009 marked the first season of football as a league sport. 3 league members ( Dayton Christian, Troy Christian, and Yellow Springs) combined with 3 “football only” members (Ft. Loramie, Jefferson, and Lehman Catholic ). The championship came down to the last Friday of the season when Lehman defeated Ft. Loramie."
  • Squirmydog
You wouldn't know where I could find a roster and/or stats for Troy Christian would you? They seem to be difficult to research.

OHSAA has GCC playin HORIZON SCIENCE ACADEMY(COLUMBUS) week 5 next year . All i know about them is that there D5 ,can't find anything about them maybe some else has some info about them.
