A Decade of D1 Champions, Whos the best or 2nd best after Colerain??

  • CardsFlyinHigh
    10 years, 10 state champions.

    2000 - Upper Arlington
    2001 - St. Ignatius
    2002 - Elder
    2003 - Elder
    2004 - Colerain
    2005 - St. X
    2006 - Davidson
    2007 - St. X
    2008 - St. Ignatius
    2009 - Davidson

Who was the best,, how would you rank them? In my opinion, the 04 Colerain team was the best team I saw ever. I also point out my ever is alot shorter then some other people's ever. If i had to rank all 10, it would go like this:

    1. 04 Colerain
    2. 08 Iggy
    3. 07 St. X
    4. 06 Davidson
    5. 03 Elder
    6. 05 St. X
    7. 02 Elder
    8. 00 Upper Arlington
    9. 09 Davidson
    10. 01 St. Ignatius

Who do you think was the best, how wold you rank them?

I'm gonna have to say the 2000 Upper Arlington team..just b/c they beat my Chieftains in the Regional Championship. :D

That 2000 Upper Arlington team was VERY good. They competely thrashed everyone in Central Ohio that year. Then they beat a very, very good Colearin team 10-7 in the semis, followed by beating a Solon team that completely dismantled #1 Iggy something like 31-13.

    1. Colerain '04
    2. St. X '07
    3. Upper Arlington '00
    4. Davidson '06
    5. Elder '03
    6. Iggy '08
    7. St. X '05
    8. Davidson '09
    9. Elder '02
    10. Iggy '01

Obviously, all of these teams are very good because they were all state champions.

    1. Colerain 04

Okay let's change the question a bit.

    Who is Second best?
  • Mooney44Cards
    St. X 07 probably.

But by far, Colerain 04 was out of everyone else's league.
  • september63
Elder won back to back.................and you arent even considering one of those teams as best of the decade?
  • september63
10 years, 10 state champions is also incorrect. How about 10 years, 6 different state champions?
  • september63
I know this was a D I question. But Mooney may have had the best team, any division, of the decade.

Better than '04 Colerain? Hmm, I think some Mooney fans are getting carried away. I guess we'll never know for sure, but you better be prepared for some backlash from most of the other posters.

Each team is completely different, even if its the same school winning it.
  • september63
Yes they are. But technically, it is 10 years 6 state champoins!! It isnt 10 different schools.

In case you didnt notice the D in my post. I'm not a Mooney fan at all! Mooney best of the decade? Dont know, but this years team WOULD have beat atleast 5 of the DI champions of the past decade.

Well maybe the next thread I'll put one for each division and one thread for overall best team. Ironically i think Mooneys best team this decade didnt even win teh state title.

But back to the D1 schools, it kinda shows which teams stand the test of time. For instance, i really don't remember much about UA or the 01 Iggy team since they were the farthest back but after the years they dont stand out to me. I think the Colerain team will always stand out. For me personally I put 08 Iggy really high on the list but who knows years from now if i'll still remember them as a great team
  • Mooney44Cards
01 Iggy throttled St. X in the title game if I remember correctly. Wasn't even close. Anthony Gonzalez was a junior that year.

another vote for colerain at #1, surprised you have ignatius so high, id put then near the bottom.

what was the average score during that colerain year, something like 50-7? and now that coach could be coaching in the sugar bowl against meyer/tebow.
  • ZalKath
lol...I'm not a Mooney fan...but year in and year out I think Mooney could play with anyone without a doubt!

If you talk to followers of the Elder program, they will tell you their 2001 team was better than the back to back squads. The 2001 Panthers spanked St. X during the regular season and were upset by St. X in the Region 4 Finals.

The 2002 team faced Warren Harding in blizzard and won 21-19. Many people the snow helped slow down a very fast, good Harding squad.

The 2003 team was very good. The rolled the competition that year in the playoffs. They beat Dublin Scioto and St. Ed's in convincing fashion. However, the Colerain 2003 squad (basically the same team as the great 04 squad) manhandled them in the Region 4 final every way but on the final scoreboard. Colerain had a lot of turnovers that game which ultimately cost them the victory.

Mooney's best team of the decade didn't win the state title--but I'd take '04 Colerain over them. Definitely the best team of the decade.

Are you referring to an individual year or as a whole? If you are referring to each season I really struggle to see a year I believe Mooney was better than the DI champ. I guess you could argue on paper this year could be the year, but then again Glenville was much better than Davidson on paper and look how that worked out. If you believe Mooney could have hung with 2004 Colerain, 2007 St. X, 2008 Iggy, or 2000 Upper Arlington I have some ocean front property in Boardman to sell you.

Be honest, the only Mooney game you saw was the title game right? And you are an expert on Mooney right?
  • SQ_Crazies
^I saw more than that and agree with him.

This year wasn't even Mooney's best team of the decade.
