Should this have been excessive celebration?

  Based on the knowledge that they were warned earlier by the officials not to do it, it changes things just a little.

  Even if they were warned, that's complete BS. They pointed to the dang sky to acknowledge a friend that just passed. Big freakin' deal. OHSAA should be ashamed of themselves for standing behind the call.

  it didnt cost them the game they still could have stopped the other teams offense. if they were warned they shouldnt complain. finally if i were the ref in that situation i would make sure i was conveniently not looking so as not to make it an issue

  It's a point of emphasis, and the refs shouldnt be in the business to determine what is a tribute to a friend, or grandstanding, or taunting.
  
  I think the rule itself is a bad one (too much left up to interpretation), and should only be used for instances of taunting, which is easier to spot (think David Boston vs. Charles Woodson)...or cases where the celebrations drags on.

  Was the celebration excessive? Yes, 9 guys from the team in the endzone after a long pass play.
  Did the official know that they are not allow to penalize the team for such celebration because a friend at the school died earlier in the weeK? IDK.
  Did the officials verbally ask them to return to their side of the field? IDK.
  The problem would not exist if the scoring player would have given the ball to the official and ran to his sideline to celebrate there.

  It was the backjudge, not the "ref", "refs" or referee that threw the flag.

  The flag may not have been thrown for pointing to the sky...the official may have thrown it for the player jumping on top of the group of other players in the end zone. He ran to the spot and threw his flag, it may have appeared to be for the pointing to the sky, but it could have been that he simply waited until he got to the spot before he threw the flag.

  I think without the pointing to the sky, this still warrants a flag. If the circumstances did not involve a deceased friend, this would not be a topic of discussion, and I think most would consider that celebration excessive.
  
  This is more evident if in fact they had been warned previously about the issue.

  It wasnt a show, or taunting...what happen to be allowed to get excited after a nice score....especially when you score the go ahead TD....

  This is what I was thinking when I watched the video earlier today. I think the kid running in and jumping on the pile is what drew the flag.

  No, the official himself has said that the pointing is what drew the flag. But that is second hand info, so take it for what its worth.

  Most Ref's are just kids that couldn't or didn't get to play the game when they were younger so now they get to take out their revenge!

  Hmmmmm. After every score the Cavs greet the player in the end zone. Been doing it for years and not once has anything been done...that includes the State games.
  
  From the video I saw, I actually missed it because it happened so fast and with his teammates. Officials can use discretion. I will admit, this is the first I heard of a "warning" been given prior. If a warning had been given, I wonder if they were thinking something a bit more...substantial.
  
  If they were warned then the officials also probably knew the reason. If that is all that was done then they could have turned a blind eye to it.
