Ursuline is certainly possible should both teams make the playoffs. Both are D-5 and in the same region. I don't see Mooney vs. Campbell Memorial on the horizon for many reasons. Ursuline and Mooney have much stronger programs than they did back in the late 1980's. And Campbell's has regressed some, although it seems to be on the way back if one looks at the past couple of years. Whether it ever gets back to where it was in the late 1980's remains to be seen. Defensively the teams these days still lack the hard hitting and physical nature that the 80's defenses had. A lot of good things will have to continue to happen. -
ThinthickbigredWasnt Campbell a big school ? didnt they have a real big stadium and good fan base? .. Does Mooney compete to get the best from that school as they do Boardman and Fitch?

YES ! Just like Big Red in the tri-state area. -

Big school? No. Big stadium? Yes for a small school. Campbell played Big red last in 94 as that was our last half decent team. Well would have been a good team if it was not for some of the players being babies and not contributing to the team. They were one of the teams that Us Campbell fans do not like to discuss much just in passing. But yes Campbell was once a team that dominated the Youngstown area. Beating the likes of boardman Fitch you name it we beat them. consistently. one lots of Steel Vally championships. Mooney and Ursuline i will leave you with this. I don't care much for them. Especially Ursuline that has one a few div 5 state games with players of D1 caliber. and playing a DIV 1 and 2 schedule. This is my opinion. They have no business being in a small div like div 5. Mooney seems to be the only Parochial school in the right Division. they are consistent with playoffs and miss playoffs. they are not reloading every year like Ursuline seems to do with a significantly lower enrollment. See that kinda of funny to me. It kinda sucks having two Parochial schools within a few miles from each other. Please no bashing me this is just my opinion.Thinthickbigred;824003 wrote:Wasnt Campbell a gig school ? didnt they have a real big stadium and good fan base? .. 1994 was Campbell Memorial's first season as an independent after the old Mahoning Valley Conference was dissolved. Campbell Memorial and Warren JFK were not invited to join the new Metro Athletic Conference. 1994 was Coach Mickey Soroka's first and only season as the head coach at Campbell. The 1994 team was highly touted in the pre-season. The team was blessed with good players at the skill positions. But I questioned the experience and depth especially within the offensive and defensive lines. That team opened the season by blowing out a weak Allegheny Academy team. Week two was against a good Youngstown Chaney team. Chaney beat Campbell 20-0 and it was all downhill from there. Injuries in the Chaney game and some disciplinary issues prior to the game at Big Red led to an easy Big Red victory. Campbell's highlight of the 1994 season was a 7-0 victory over then arch-rival Warren JFK. Injuries througout the season plagued Campbell, as well as those disciplinary problems. Big Red did come to Campbell in 1995. I believe Mark McCann was the new head coach at Campbell in 1995 as Coach Soroka resigned after just one season as head coach. And that game was no contest. Big Red dominated from the start. On a sad note, former Coach Soroka passed away earlier this year at the age of 49. -

FairwoodKingThere's a story behind the 1995 Big Red-Campbell game. In 1994 the two schools signed a two-year contract. Although the contract said the games would be home-and-home, Reno and the Campbell coach made a gentlemen's agreement that both games would be played in Steubenville. In 1994, the first game was played in Steubenville. But then the Campbell coach resigned and the new coach refused to honor the gentlemen's agreement. He wanted the 1995 game played in Campbell as the contract stipulated. Reno finally agreed but with the understanding that Big Red could keep whatever ticket money it received from Big Red fans. The Campbell coach thought we would bring about 300 people. Instead we brought 3000. We not only beat Campbell 36-0 but we took home $15,000. To this day that is one of the largest purses Big Red has ever received for playing a regular-season away game.

getting beat by them 36-0 is just humiiating ..We had to be horrible 94 was a great team ..We were a little sketchy back then .. Reno's boys have taken some bad loses but that and the Boardman 54-0 game are some of the worst -
ManO'WarThinthick, we WON the game 35-6.
BTW, not that it matters, but the Boardman game was 52-0. -
ManO'WarBTW, Campbell's stadium was one of the best places we have played at. I would only put it behind places like Massillon, Canton, Warren, and Wheeling Island.
