BTrevAnyone know if the Cats have anymore passing scrimmages. If so, when/where are they?
Anyone know who they're other hitting scrimmage is against, and when it is? They scrimmage Steubenville on August 18, in Steubenville. I imagine they'll scrimmage someone in Struthers the week before. I just don't know who, or when, it'll be. -

Yup your right. still it was not one of Bayuks many great season. But he did what no other coach did after rozum. It was not like we had coaches knocking on the door to take on this challenge in Campbell.lets_go_devils;830636 wrote:Bayuks first year we actually went 1-9. Beat EL with a late field goal 18-15 -

As long as Campbell was a small school independent, which was over a decade, there weren't that many respected head coaches willing to come to Campbell. As a small school independent, it was tough for Campbell to find games. And there was little incentive for the kids due to not being in a conference. Hence there were no conference championships to shoot for. And none of the players could be selected as an all conference player. Basically Campbell was playing just to make the playoffs. And the schedules they had to play did not help the drive for the playoffs all that much, if at all. Joining the MAC in 2005 was the key, although Campbell really got whacked around by the bigger schools in that conference. Once the MAC was dissolved and the new league was formed, things started to come together. Ideally, I would like to see Campbell get to the point where they can play those larger schools once in awhile, although that may not seem likely with Campbell now a D-5 school. But first things first. Hey, this is the Struthers thread fellas !!! -
BTrevThanks BigDean1... it is a Struthers thread. Don't forget that! lol

BTrevSo... let's ponder some of the great Struthers Football families...
The Sepesys. Dave, Dan, and Andrew. Elizabeth was a pretty good athlete too. The youngest, Alex, could be the best in that crop. Anyone know if he'll be at Struthers this year? He's only gonna be in 7th grade, but he'd be a 2 year starter in MS, and probably a 2 or 3 year starter in HS. I know he was at a Catholic school... Mooney might steal him away.
The Horvaths. There's a whole bunch. I can't even keep track of them all, and I don't know who's related to who..
The Yemmas/Valiquettes. Mark Yemma was a 3 year letterman, and a star on the 1980 MVC Championship team. His nephews, Sam and Tony, were good football players too. Sam was a tank... probably still is. There's probably more Yemmas that stood out too, that I can't think of.
Zetts. Gary was a stud in his day. QBing repeat undefeated SVC Championship teams in '67 and '68. He's one of the most successful coaches Struthers has ever had too. The only coach I can think of with similar success, is "Big" Pete Pirone. Tim was a very underrated QB, and Christy was a great athlete, and one of the all time great basketball players at Struthers, if I'm not mistaken.
Call me biased... Lancaster/Trevis. George played center for the SVC Championship team in '63. He earned a scholarship to Michigan. He was inducted into the HOF a few years ago. His son, Kevin, was a safety on the 1999 team. George's nephews, the Trevis boys, Dave, Doug, and Darin, were all pretty good athletes. Dave was a tackle on the '78 team that upset Ursuline. The twins, Doug (CB) and Darin (C), were on the 1980 MVC Championship team. Doug had the game winning interception against Girard, that wrapped up the championship. Darin was a 3 year letterman, and an All-MVC center. Dave's daughter, Jacquie, was a State Qualifier in track in 2003. She held the county record in high jump, until the Gailbraith girl (also from Struthers) broke it in 2008, I think. Doug's daughter, Marissa, was on the State Championship team at Poland this past year. She played left field the whole game, as a Sophomore (2/3 and scored a run). Darin has been a member of the Struthers Fire Department for the last 20 years. George's Brother-in-law, and the Trevis boys' Dad, Joe Trevis, was a star at Youngstown North. He walked on at Ohio U, earned a scholarship, and lettered in '57, '58, and '59. He was an All-MAC tackle in 1959. Joe's cousin, John Trevis, starred at Youngstown Wilson. He also went to Ohio U, and was a member of OU's only undefeated team, in 1960. He lettered in '60, '61, and '62.
Other names that come to mind... Strozier, Fox, Barone, Romeo, Walton, Suchora, Sedlacko, Morell...
Anyone else have any names? -
reddevil90Danny Horvath of the 97 team was a great player. He went to Loweville for a season when struthers shut down the season. I was married to George Horvath niece. And don't forget the QB McFadden of thee 99 tea that took out Campbell in the playoffs. They came ready to play. we came into that game thinking we had it. Lanzos and god who knows who else! There where tons and Tons of great Struthers players. To many to remember. My brother was telling be of a kid that played in the 81 and 82 teams at qb that just was a real stud at that position. i have to call and ask his name again. but man what a bunch of battles Campbell And struthers played! i mean there was a time they had to stop the rivalry back in the day cause it got to violent. There will never be any teams in my mind that had the rivalry Campbell and Struthers had at both Knapick field and struthers field. Those games will never be repeated. Last years game was fun cause Campbell would score struthers would score. it was a battle.

genghis dong" Mooney might steal him away."
LOL! you said he is at a catholic school now? We must of got him at 5 or 6 then, and if he's at St Nicks now wouldn't Struthers be stealing him away? -
BTrevI heard he was at St. Christine's, or wherever. A friend of mine, who coached 7th and 8th grade, said that he would be at Struthers this year. It wasn't set in stone though.
Is it really stealing someone if their whole family went to Struthers, and they live there? If someone had family tradition at Mooney, but they went to Struthers their whole life... then decided to go to Mooney... I wouldn't consider that stealing... or the R word. ya know what I'm saying? -
genghis dongI understand and agree with that. I guess when all you hear about is how your school cheats you get defense.
Back on topic. I have to get to a game this year and see Mike Kunzer play. I saw him play a few times in 7th and 8th grade at South Catholic. He was an animal. -

I was talking families, not individual players. Add the Lariccias to that list too. Joel and Dom. The Hill twins, Jed and Jeremiah, didn't have the highest football IQ, but they were both big, strong, and fast. Jed got a scholarship to Penn State, and now he's a professional model. Jeremiah became a Marine, had two tours in Iraq, and received a Purple Heart.
Murphy Ray? Is that the guy you're thinking of. My Dad is the afore mentioned center from the 1980 MVC Championship team. Ron Anzevino and Kenny George were the QBs in 1980. Anzevino was a Senior, but George was a Junior. My Dad said George got the majority of snaps in '80, so I imagine he would've started again in '81. Maybe Ray was the QB for the Cats in '85 and '87... I don't know. I lost my Big Red Struthers Football Bible...
Are you thinking of Mark Horvath, from the '97 team? He wore #3, and played FB and LB... mostly LB. -

Kunzer has some talent. He isn't the biggest guy on the field, but he has a big heart. He impressed me with how he ran against Liberty last year. Hopefully he put on some weight, and got stronger over the offseason.
A source on the team told me that the majority of reps will likely be split up between Kunzer, Maillis, Stewart, and Kimbrough. I wouldn't be surprised if Braxton "The New Alpha Male" Koup got a few carries here and there as well. BKoup will probably play more defense this year though. -
reddevil90double post~~~

reddevil90You know what it was Mark Horvath. I got that confused with Danny Horvath. I called Mike horvath today. There dad is George Horvath... Sorry about that. Like i said my mind does not always remember there names as i have been divorced for years now. I keep in contact wit them cause we are still sorta close. Even my ex wife ad i are still close for the kids since i have custody of them. It was Marky Horvath. He was a beast of a LB. he was part of those great teams struthers had of the late 90's... i believe they where MAC champs! Marks Brother also played too and that's why i got confused. His name Was Danny!

soupcitysoldierspread all day...who is ursulines starting qb this year? durkin?
-
BTrevIn 1997, Struthers shared the MAC Championship with Niles. That team was loaded. Jason Rivello and Rick McFadden split reps at QB. Rivello was more of a running QB. Dave Sepesy, C.J. Leone, and Walter Reyes all shared the RB duties. Mark Horvath played FB, and I think he split time with Tony Bozacco. I think Sep played some FB too. Pat Grandy was basically the go to guy at receiver. Horvath was a damn good LB. Matt Rupe set the school record for interceptions in a season in '97, with 9. Matt Clinkscale was a pretty good kick returner. Before Larry Wylie broke the record for return yards in 2005, I think Clinkscale had the record.
They went 8-2 that year. They lost to the Brad Smith led Chaney team, and Niles... I think. It was Canfield or Niles. Whoever they lost to, they beat the other to capture a share of the championship.
Believe it or not, that was the last Struthers team to beat Poland. I remember sitting, practically in the endzone, as the Cats capped off their season with a 34-14 win in Poland.
No one saw them going 8-2 in 1997, because they were 0-10 in 1996. So, if they can go from 0-10 to 8-2 in a year, I think it's definitely possible to go from 4-6 to 6-4, or better,in a year. -

That's how its looking.. take it to the ursuline thread.
As for the little sepesy kid, he's going to play at struthers. for now at least.
You might want to look into things better than that. -
Spread All Day1997 was Brad Smith's Freshman year...... lol

I was going off the top of my head, give me a break. I was 10 in '97. They did lose to Chaney, and Chaney did have a pretty good team, didn't they?
"As for the little sepesy kid, he's going to play at struthers. for now at least.

What's that mean? My source was right, wasn't he? -
OhioHe was never going to go anywhere but struthers. More then half of your sources are wrong. I know the kid and his family personally
-
BTrevAs do I... I don't see them often, and I'm not close personal friends with the Sepesys by any means. I do know them, I do respect them, and I do believe I'm in good spirits with them. I haven't talked to any of them personally in quite a while though.
What do you mean more than half of my sources are wrong? I only had one source...
A conversation I had with a friend who coached Jr. High last year.
Me: "Are there any kids coming up that you're looking forward to coaching?"
Coach: "The Sepesy kid is a beast. He'll start in 7th grade. I don't know if he's coming to Struthers yet though, he's at {insert Catholic school here}."
I never said he was actually considering going somewhere else... I didn't know, neither did my source. Was he at a Catholic school last year though? Or, was that information incorrect. From what I knew, it was up in the air. I didn't mean to make a big fuss about it. He's only in 7th grade. A lot can happen between now and 2017. My apologies if I started any rumors or anything.
The Jr. High team should be pretty good this year. The Freshman team may struggle somewhat. The JV team should be loaded. The Varsity team should be formidable, and feature a nice combination of Seniors, Juniors, and even a hand full of Sophomores. -

Yes Chaney was good that year.BTrev;832599 wrote:I was going off the top of my head, give me a break. I was 10 in '97. They did lose to Chaney, and Chaney did have a pretty good team, didn't they?

Sepesy is staying at Struthers. I don't see mooney or ursuline getting him. Especially Ursuline. -
Spread All DayWhy are we talking about a 7th grader LOL.
Anyways, with 6 hime games this season, i look for the Cats to take advantage of that -
BTrevMaybe I was just fishing for things to talk about. I just brought him up because I brought up his brothers, and I heard he was good. It is rather silly. I didn't think it'd get blown outta context like that.
Say, hypothetically though... a kid from Struthers, Campbell, or Poland, decided to go to Ursuline. They've shown a lot of promise, and they possess a lot of talent, but they're only 13 or 14 years old. Would it really not be such a big deal then? The Campbell guys were upset that the 8th grader QB they had decided to go to Ursuline. No one asked them why it was a big deal, or why they were talking about it. If a Poland player left for a parochial, it'd be the end of the world, and they'd be exiled. I'm not saying it will ever happen, and I'm especially not naming any names... but why should it be any less of an issue if it happened at Struthers.
Anyway...
Do they have six home games? Which are home? I know we had questions about the East and Lakeview games. Are they both at home? I can't imagine they'll have four home games in a row...
