State playoff game locations. It's about time.....

  • Be Nice
some of the state title games were played back in central Ohio. Time for others to make that long drive. IMO they should all be moved back to the Columbus area. And stay there. Let's hear it!

A tangent off the original point, but how do we see the ticket situation working out?

It appears in previous times at Ohio Stadium, games were played as doubleheaders on one ticket. Under the Stark County setup, all six games have their own tickets (sold in a book for $48 or $8 a piece, $9 for an individual ticket). Now, we'll have six games at Ohio Stadium. Are they planning to continue three games a day, or are we looking at two games a day for three days? If it's all three in one day, do you they plan on vacating the stadium of fans and forcing multi-game patrons to reenter? Or, will they just grossly overprice the all-day ticket to $20-$30 to accommodate the lack of crowd control? Or, do they take a bit of a loss and just charge $10-$15 and accept that some people will stay all day for a cheaper price? If so, what do you suppose their budgeted revenue totals will be compared to the Stark County setup.

Will concessions be Ohio Stadium prices, or will they accommodate the fact these are high school games where most families aren't looking to fork over a small fortune for a burger and a pop.

After seeing the Herbstreit games this year, I am looking forward to the games at Ohio Stadium. I think a change of pace is needed and the old adage, I think, will apply in that, "You don't know what you have until it's gone". I think Stark County will prove to be the better venue in the long run. But, I don't think Columbus will be a boondoggle. It will just be inconvenient financially for one of the two groups (either the all-game patrons or the 'my team is here so I'm here' patrons). And I'm guessing it'll be on the heads of the participating teams' fans to take the burden of cost and expect much higher prices to see their team in the championship.

And, a side point to all of this, the revenue generated from the live television broadcasts have to be looked at compared to potential profit/loss moving to Columbus. So much easier to watch on TV than actually show up for the games. And I'm sure a lot of fans out there feel the same way. Maybe a required 72-hr tape-delay (like WTOV in Steubenville had to do when Big Red was in the title games since we didn't get ONN or STO) to force more participating fans to actually show up to see the game.

LOL..soooo..first you make a thread about recruiting...that's had probably 4 different threads about it on this site...then you bring up the title games locations...which is in the same boat. Been discussed many times on here...and you're beating a dead horse. They are going back to Columbus...and attendance will suck...and they will be moved right back to Stark County where they belong.
  • OQB
^^agreed....who wants to play in a 5% filled stadium?

OrrvilleQB;530331 wrote:^^agreed....who wants to play in a 5% filled stadium?

The people that don't wanna drive any further than Columbus. Lol
  • OQB
I'm talking about schools and players themselves. Would you want to play in a full or near full stadium, or play in an empty stadium just to say you played at the shoe? I would prefer a full crowd.
  • THE4RINGZ
So there have been threads about recruiting in HS sports and threads about moving the football championship games to Columbus? Must have missed those. So I am off to start my public v. Private thread bet no one has thought of that yet

Playing in the horseshoe is a great thing no bones about it . Canton and Massillon have done a fine job ,but truthfully i think the attendance could have been up more for the title games in those cities. I know Massillon follows theyre team like the Steelers do in the NFL ,but when it comes to following other high school championship games I see the attendance is pittyful . Ohio stadium may bring a nice boost to the attendance . Just my opinion. If I lived in Massillon or Canton Id be at everyone of those games . Id like to see our attendance figures comparable to Texas and not just for big schools . when I see 5,450 or something like that for a title game ,something is wrong . Where are all these football loving people? Even West Virginia outdraws the Ohio title games ,not D-1 but the others and they are played at Wheeling. TRUE. They have gotten 10,000 for a single A game

It's called 'Live Television'. Attendance has dropped significantly b/c of live TV. And you won't be able to convince me otherwise. Hell, I live 2 miles from Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. And unless it's my alma mater playing, no thanks. I'll watch it on live TV from the comfort of my warm recliner.
  • Thinthickbigred
It aint the same to me . If I lived 2 miles from PBTS Id be at all the title games . I do think they ought to tape delay the games though. WTOV 9 in Steubenville aires all the WVA title games , I am pretty sure they do it live and they still get a hell of a crowd at those games . Around 10 or 11 k if a local team is in like last year . If there are any playoff games at Harding other than Big Red I plan to attend . I am also willing to bet that alot of other states have live TV for title games and they do better than we do alot better. WPIAL always televises the title games live and or delay from Hienz field . I watch them on the TV but dont know the attendance that they get .

We went to Paul Brown Stadium a few years ago when Jonathan Alder played Mooney for the title game. The football atmosphere was fantastic. The parking was an absolute joke and the stadium wasn't much better. First let's start with the hotel we stayed at in the Massilon area. None of us in our party of 8 speak Indian. It was very hard to understand what the man behind the window was saying. If there was a way to butcher the English language he did a fantastic job. Next...our journey around to the back of the hotel to our rooms. Has anyone ever stayed at a place where you have to park your car beside one that is propped up on cinder blocks with its two front tires missing? We booked this hotel over the internet. We didn't have the time to look for another one. Enough said. Parking....the main parking lot was totally full when we arrived. Closed! Our next option was to park in someone's side yard for $10.00. We had no problem with that . What we did have a problem with was how they, the owners of the house/yard, parked cars around ours. We had to wait over an hour and a half for others to arrive and move their cars before we could leave. What a joke and then the owner of the house/yard had the balls to say....this was my son's first time to park cars for me so give him a break. Yea, we wanted to give you and him a break alright. PBS...again great football atmosphere, but I do want to ask this.....don't you think it's time to make improvements? After all, you do make a lot of money off of us fans that drive boo coo miles to get there. And for those who say the "Shoe" doesn't provide a high school football game atmosphere attendance wise...get a clue. If a HS football player had the chance to play at PBS or in the Shoe WE ALL KNOW which place he would chose. Better hotels, better parking and a much, much better facility for the games to be played.

Hey, for the haters....start your own threads. That's what this site it all about. Simply don't even bother to open up the one's I start. End of story.

For the one's that want to contribute please feel free. Have a great day.

Playing in the horseshoe is fantastic . People who would say otherwise are just misinformed or biased . Another point about the attendance or lack there of from the locals . They have been blessed to carry all these games for years and people come from all over the state Cinci Coldwater Ironton wherever and stay in hotels eat and gas up and then the locals dont come out to the games . They dont appreciate the out of town people and have come to think it is theyre right to have these games . its time to move on . If they showed some appreciation and came to the games then they would have a better standing. Columbus is a wonderful central location .

    1) Guess that's your fault for not doing better research on hotels beforehand isn't it? There is plenty of fine hotels in the area. It's not Massillon's fault you chose a crappy one. You think Columbus doesn't have bad hotels?

    2) Parking...you could have got to the game sooner. Then it wouldn't have been an issue.

    3) I have never stepped foot in PBTS, so I can't comment on that...but..it's seems like that's the only gripe you have that isn't of any fault of your own.

    4) Nobody is 'hating'. Everyone is commenting that this same thread has been on here numerous times before. End of story.

I can assure you the people of Massillon DON'T take these games for granted. If you think that, you are either an idiot or have never been here during the week of the Championships. You don't have to 'come to the games' to appreciate anything.

Chiefs....#1. Wrong, big boy. Absolutely not our fault. You might want to re-read my post. We booked that hotel over the internet. Research? What the hell are you talking about? We booked in advance. It was a total dump. How about some false advertising on their part.

#2. We got there one hour before kickoff. The lot was full. How is anyone that has never been there before know that parking was limited? The parking lot at PBS is way to small to hold state tournament parking. Nice try on that one, but what a stupid rebuttal.

    3. ^^^So you admit you have never set foot in PBS. LOL Then Mr. Expert how can you even pretend to comment on the parking situation and improvements I mentioned should be made if you've never even been there? Care to explain? Foot in mouth disease?

    4. If you have seen similar threads then why bothering opening up mine? Did you ever think that some of us on here just might have missed seeing those similar threads? I like starting threads. Why? Because it amazes me at the comments given such as yours. Hey pal, maybe you should start more threads. It's fun. End of story.

I can tell you this put the lower 5 divisions at Harding stadium in Steubenville and we would sell out every game. The Massillon Canton area have come to take this event as a right of passage so to speek . I call half empty stadiums lack of appreciation. Wheeling Island WVA that carries the three classes of WVA titles does a better job . They even get more people at those games . Ofcourse alot of us Ohio people attend . They carry the games on TV also .

    Oh boy..where do I start?

    1) Yes..it IS your fault! It's called 'user reviews'. If a hotel doesn't have any reviews from people that have previously stayed there, then don't book it. It's that simple. Almost all sites have a reviewing system. I book many hotels over the internet, as I'm sure most people have, but if it has negative or zero feedback, you better believe I'm not booking that hotel unless there is absolutely no other option, big boy!

    2) Again, maybe you should have done some research? Or perhaps ask some people that's been there before? Most know that parking is an issue, all you had to do was ask. So, no, that wasn't a 'stupid rebuttal'...it's just laziness on your part for not checking on things an advance.

    3) Of course I admit it. And where the hell did I claim to be 'Mr. Expert'? I've made all my comments based on COMMON SENSE! You know, like, it should be common sense to know that, hey..I haven't been to this place before...so I better check up on some things first! See what happens you don't use common sense? You have a bad experience! No foot in mouth here sir, I drive by the stadium every game day, I can see the parking situation. Did I say I've never been to PBTS? NO..I said I've never been IN PBTS. BIG difference, big boy! Go ahead and insert that foot that you were talking about.

    4) B/c it's my position to OPEN THE THREADS and see what's going on. I open all threads. Isn't that what a mod is supposed to do? Nice try! And as common as this topic is...there is a search feature. ;) Just in case you missed it, PAL!

You ever think that the teams that play in WVa might just travel well? Don't blame the attendance on the town that hosts the events. The towns job is to put on the best show possible, it isn't the towns problem to fill the stands with the Massillon people. It's up to the fans of the teams playing to fill the stadium!

It is true that we have had several local teams play in the WVA finals in Wheeling ,and having a Casino and a racetrack and several show bars right next to the stadium help . Wheeling now that is fantaSTIC ON ALL LEVELS PLUS THEY HAVE A HUGE BEAUTIFUL STADIUM WITH NOT A BAD SEAT. IT ISNT UP TO YOUR AREA TO SELL SEATS BUT THEN IT SHOWS US HOW INTERESTED YOU SO CALLED FOOTBALL FANATICS ARE REALLY INTO SEEING A D6 CHAMP GAME. COLUMBUS HERE WE COME .

Well when Massillon is a Division ONE school..why would most in Massillon want to see a D6 game? I'd say most in Massillon call themselves MASSILLON fans...I don't think they are going to go anywhere to watch a D6 school. Guess what, you're going to have that same thing in COLUMBUS. Columbus area is terrible when it comes to attendance at football games, minus a few teams. But for the most part, it sucks. And if you think it's going to be better for the finals, I'd say you are sadly mistaken. It will be back in Stark County in no time.

So, can we expect this subject to dry up for at least the next 4 years?
