DIVISION 3 STATE CHAMPIONS YOUNGSTOWN CARDINAL MOONEY def. Columbus DeSales 35-7
-
september63Am sure that is why be brought that Big 8 rivalry up. Wasnt just a coincindence? Having said that, Mooney being represented at BOTH Nebraska and Oklahoma is indeed very impressive. Dont forget University of Arizona, either.
-
purple_reinDeSales could soon have its first major college head coach as well if you believe the Luke Fickell to Akron rumors.
-
PaladinMooney wins this game easily. DeSales could get embarrassed.

ZalKathMooney is a BEAST! I hope Desales give Mooney a better game than we did...I would enjoy seeing a close hard fought game by both squads...

purplesageWhile I am trying to write a little something about what I think each championship game will bring from my perspective, I have sat here for some time just shaking my head at the computer screen, unable to type anything logical!!!!!!!!!! This will be an emotional game for Desales but I think Mooney has a different perspective, they seem to be emotional but it's more like a "pissed at the world" emotional and that can be good and bad at the same time!!!!!!! Good in the sense that they have a mission, righting the wrongs of recent history, but bad in that focus can be easily lost and opportunities squandered!!!!!! The Mooney team I saw last week would hands down beat any size high school team in the country!!!! They seem to have another gear for both speed and power!!!!! Can Desales make them play from behind?????? That would make this more interesting!!!!!!!!! Can Desales make it close then have something left for the final quarter???????? Probably the only chance they have because Mooney gets rolling downhill and look out below!!!!!!!!! Hey I'm proud of myself that actually sounded unprejudiced and somewhat well thought out!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mooney will win this game but I'll be on the Desales side for moral support and I like their colors better!!!!Go Purple and White!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
SQ_CraziesHoly cow dude, really????????
And my only response is that the Mooney team you saw last week would beat any team in Ohio and probably the vast majority of teams in the country--but ANY team in the country? I'm not sure about that. -
Mooney44CardsLoud noises!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not really considering those teams have nothing in common with the teams from the Big 8 days. Neither Nebraska nor Oklahoma can run a lick anymore. Their coaches will tell you that I'm sure.Mooney44Cards wrote:
How ironic that the coaches at Oklahoma and Nebraska went to Mooney right?mlisi39 wrote: Early forecast says 32 degrees and flurries with a 10 mph wind.
Could be a white field for 2 teams that love to run the ball.
reminds of Oklahoma v. Nebraska back in the days of the Big 8.
The point is that I love a good ground game and can't stand the "basketball on turf" that some schools play. It's sickening to watch teams throw, throw, throw. Did you watch LSU throw 2 straight fade patterns from the 1 yard line two weeks ago? That would have Woody Hayes and Bear Bryant rolling over in their graves.
That is why I will enjoy this game so much. 2 teams that love to run the ball, but use different styles to do it. Gimme a good defense and 5 big uglies up front to power the running game any day. You can have the spread offenses that Field, Hubbard, Poland and Steubenville threw at Mooney. I'll show you 126-14 on the scoreboard at HALFTIME of those games. That's an average of 31-3 at HALFTIME for you math majors.
There is one thing in common that almost every team has in common that will be playing this weekend, they can RUN the ball.
Glenville
Davidson
Winton Woods
Maple Heights
Mooney
DeSales
Alter
Chagrin Falls
Ursuline
Coldwater
Delphos
St. Paul
All of those teams, with the exception of Coldwater and Glenville rammed the ball down opponents throats all through the postseason. The spread might be the flavor of the month, but when it comes to playoff time in the state of Ohio, the running game and defense are King. -
SQ_CraziesOh please, lets be honest. When it comes to playoff time just about anywhere the running game and defense are king! Look at the NFL! You're totally right, the spread is overrated. Fancy football has always been overrated.
-
Mooney44CardsWhat is this "pass" thing you speak of?
-
SQ_Crazies^You're better off not knowing!
-
WoopsThis "could" be the most intriguing game of the playoffs..
Disregard the week #2 game and results, that was years ago.
How can Mooney not be favored?
I agree , they could challenge at all divisions.
If DeSales has to try and roll the scoreboard to keep up w Mooney, they will be disappointed at the end of the game.
If it is a defensive struggle , slobber-knocker, they should fair well.
I'm pissed that the game is not being broadcast in HD!!!!!
Good luck to both teams, play hard and stay injury free.
I will be rooting for the Central Ohio guys! -
Cmhs74Everyone knows these two teams will be pounding the ball on the ground, the question is who will win the battle at the line. Mooney has found out in the past it doesn't matter what the experts or fans think, it's which team wants it more and comes prepared for a hard fought 48 minutes. Seniors, you've put in 4 years of blood and sweat and you've reached the pinacle, how bad do you want to finish it. No one is going to hand you the title because on paper your suppose to win. You have to want it worse than DeSales. Give it all you got for 48 minutes and you'll have no regrets. Best of luck this coming Friday. GO CARDS

So are you saying that Hilliard Davidson isn't the only team that has replaced their wide receivers with "far outside blockers"?mlisi39 wrote:

Pescara71I agree, the running game is fun to watch, but in the NFL and College you can't count on that offense. 1 holding flag seems to put it out of commision , IF THEY GET CALLED.
In High School it's different, yes penalties will still really hurt a running offense, but you can get cooked in a away game to.
Lets face it, Mooney didn't have to learn no more than, option right\left, cut-back and power, belli, or fullback trap with that set of atheletes.
Balance is usually the key for most teams who play competetion equal to their's, it's easy to have DOMINANT athelete's and then proclaim their philosophy the best.
As far as DEFENSE...
A good stout defense is a must, and a great time consuming run game is also a great defense, if the REF'S will let you do it!! I swear the TV Ratings CEO's tell the ref's to get rid of the ALL running, it ends the games to soon, and is boring to the casual fan. Whatever, I say to Hell with the casual fans if they don't like it.
Again, Mooney could run at will on almost anybody, and even if a OPPOSSING TEAM OF MOONEY TRIED to "run the ball" , they are not gonna gameplan that against MOONEY!! Are you nuts!! Or you better be a GCL team!
You can't play Mooney's game and win, but you better have a defense that can stop the RUN!!!! -
Cmhs74Here we are Wednesday morning already. Hard to believe that in just over 4 days the 2009 season will be over. Best of luck to all the players who still have the privelege and honor of playing for a state championish. To all the fans who will be attending games this weekend, safe travels and good luck to your teams. GO CARDS

They might be "far outside blockers", but if you look at every long run Heard has had this year, all 10 guys besides him have put a hat on someone. That's the key, everyone has to do their job. 2 years ago L.J. Sutton never caught a single ball for Mooney, but at 6'5" he was a great decoy and his reach made him an excellent blocker on the outside.hilliardfan wrote:

SQ_CraziesGo Cards! There are a lot of people pulling for you, ignore us and the doubters and go out and play your game--if you lose, at least walk off the field knowing you gave it your best effort...same goes to DeSales. I want to see both teams give it their all and I fully expect to see that.

GoChiefsA little over 4 and a half hours until kickoff! Good luck boys!
