DIVISION 3 STATE CHAMPIONS YOUNGSTOWN CARDINAL MOONEY def. Columbus DeSales 35-7
-
Cmhs74Best of luck to both teams, just more for Mooney. Reading all the posts make me laugh as many of those who say DeSales will win and Mooney fans are rude or arrogant are the same ones who last week predicted that Big Red was going to walk all over the Cards. If you don't have any worthwhile input then why don't you go on a Big Red site and let Reno know what he did wrong last Friday and let these two fine programs enjoy being at center stage this week, they earned it.

Seriously, you just can't give up the numbers for the kid without the additional promotion??? My guess is that he shares with 3 other backs because they don't need him to run much in the 2nd half of ballgames. It is guys like you that kill the factual debates because you tack on crap and fluff to your comments - you have very good, factual points, however they get lost within the garbage.
Mooney is obviously the favorite, they earned that, but I am going to guess that week 2 was the closest game of the season for them and DeSales has improved tremendously since that time. I am sure that Mooney is a better team as well, but from week 1 to week 15, DeSales is a completely different team.
I see this one as a close, hard fought game, however, I am picking DeSales for a number of reasons. They now have a QB that will take every snap, no changing up every quarter as they did early in the season. #34, Warren Ball should be fresh and ready to roll as he has been used sparingly during the entire playoffs as he came back from an injury. Saw him run Friday night, a "downhill" runner that likes to punish tacklers with good speed. Lastly, the kicking game for DeSales is solid - could come down to a field goal or big punt (Tressel like) to pin the opposition inside the 10 yd line.
Final score - DeSales 31 - Mooney 28
Good luck to both teams - Nice to see that the championship will come down to truly the best teams in this division. -

I'll have to defend 44Mooney on this one..at least for the post you are referring to..I know nothing about Mooney except for what I seen against Steubenville. So had he not thrown that in there..I would not have known he shares the carries with 3 other backs. Hence..not having as many yards as he could have..which I'd say is all 44 was trying to say. I doubt he was trying to be a d*ck about it or anything.canofcorn wrote: Seriously, you just can't give up the numbers for the kid without the additional promotion??? You're guess would be wrong. Mooney rotates in 3 other backs regularly who are nothing to sneeze at...and also uses a quarterback who runs the ball quite well. Heard's "backup" is Ray Vinopal who also has offers from Div. I BCS schools. All 44Cards was trying to say is that Heard stats are slightly skewed considering all the firepower Mooney has in the backfield.canofcorn wrote: My guess is that he shares with 3 other backs because they don't need him to run much in the 2nd half of ballgames. -
captvernGood luck to the Mooney faithfull. RRR

NNNI remember a few years back when DeSales faced Maurice Hall in the playoffs; in that game, he topped the 50-TD and 3,000 yard marks for the season, but DeSales won 28-25 while "holding" him to around 160 yards or so.
I'm not going anywhere with that, just throwing it out there. -

actually...most of those talking trash were for Mooney to beat Steubenville...just keeping the factage straight...btw...I called 911 during that beat down you gave us...lol...Cmhs74 wrote: Best of luck to both teams, just more for Mooney. I recall that game. Thank goodness Brookhaven decided an ill-advised half-back pass from Hall on 1st and goal that was intercepted in the waning moments!!!NNN wrote: I remember a few years back when DeSales faced Maurice Hall in the playoffs; in that game, he topped the 50-TD and 3,000 yard marks for the season, but DeSales won 28-25 while "holding" him to around 160 yards or so.

TigerBuckMooney by 15. Since week 1 when Boardman "slowed" Mooney to something like a 170 yards they have been on a roll. Besides they are more than Braylon Heard. For those who watched the game against Big Red that was all they had to use. You saw a little of Venapol (Spl) and some of Charlie Brown at the end. I am not an Alumn or big fan of the Cards but I've watched them over 40 some years and this group has that chemistry about them, it will take a great team to beat them IMO. Good luck Cards.

Dean WormerOnce again I have to sit here and read a bunch of shit from people who have no dog in the fight. Most if not all DeSales people realize that Cardinal Mooney is a different animal. If you saw the game the other night it was not a aberration, they play like that on a weekly basis. I watched the game in week two and Sherm and 44cards are right, it wasn't as close as the score indicates. Can Mooney be beaten? Sure. But if you watch football you know it will take a great effort. Good luck to both teams for an injury free game.
As far as Braylon Heard and his stats. He averages about 12-15 touches a game. Both Vinapol and Griffin were on the 4x100 state championship relay team with him and they each get about 10 carries a game. Charlie Brown filled in on that relay team for a senior while he was hurt and he sees limited action during the game. Just a little football facts for those who know and understand the game. -

So we can't post if our team isn't playing? :huh:Dean Wormer wrote: Once again I have to sit here and read from people who have no dog in the fight. -

Have to agree there. The third man in the rotation is Karrington Griffin (540 and 10 td) who has missed the last 2 weeks of the playoffs and would have started for MANY teams had he not been at Mooney. He was hurt during the Hubbard game. The 4th guy is Charlie Brown (289 and 2, also 1 KOR for TD), not bad numbers, and the 5th guy is Carmen Leonelli (232 and 1). Don't forget Zordich (401 and 8) either. Alex's improvement at running the ball has really been the key IMO. there is also Brandenstein, the FB, who has 196 yards and 5 TD.sherm03 wrote:

If you want to all the stats, just go to www.mooneyfootball.com
You can find all the numbers there for the whole team. -
mlisi39^^^
Also, I would venture to guess that at least 6 of those players...
Zordich
Brandenstein
Heard
Vinopal
Griffin
Brown
...have all had multiple carries in the 1st quarter.
Leonelli and Brown generally share the garbage time carries with Ed Reese at QB who can run the ball pretty well too.
Another player that has run the ball and filled in well is the other FB Clarence Scott, who starts at NT on defense.
Between the lot of them, they have over 4200 yards and 59 TD's.
Bottom line is, NONE of that matters going into week 15 and I'm sure that every coach is reminding them of that. This is an unselfish crew and I'm sure that no one cares who gets the yards or the TD's as long as they can get a win on Friday. You won't see anyone throwing their helmet or throwing a fit on the sideline, that's for sure. They are all well mannered kids who understand what the goal has been all year long. -
spiker2059No offense Sqcrazies but if your team played and lost to mooney by 40+ or even 50 + you'd be wondering why your team was playing a catholic school who gets the best player in the whole mahoning valley too.

Good post. Seriously, considering the lack of intellegence in this sentence, I wonder how you even managed to put together a coherent thought.spiker2059 wrote: No offense Sqcrazies but if your team played and lost to mooney by 40+ or even 50 + you'd be wondering why your team was playing a catholic school who gets the best player in the whole mahoning valley too. -
SQ_CraziesUm, no. I'd say our 15-18 year olds need to get better if they want to compete on that level.

SQ They took a big step this yearSQ_Crazies wrote: Um, no. I'd say our 15-18 year olds need to get better if they want to compete on that level.
Good luck to them going forward!! -

Not to split hairs but I think Ursuline is in the Mahoning Valley and they get a bunch of good players also. See what I mean about shitty posts. No dog in the fight and no brain in the head.spiker2059 wrote: No offense Sqcrazies but if your team played and lost to mooney by 40+ or even 50 + you'd be wondering why your team was playing a catholic school who gets the best player in the whole mahoning valley too. -
SQ_CraziesI think Poland is in the Mahoning Valley and has a good program as well. Canfield, Howland, Boardman, Fitch, Ursuline, Harding, JFK, Crestview, South Range, Girard, Hubbard, Liberty, do I need to continue? All of those teams consistently put out next level talent--including a lot of D1 talent. I think some people just need to realize what we already know up here and that is that Youngstown football takes a backseat to no other area in the state.
-
pbuckWhat more can you say about this game two great programs will do battle..... Both teams I feel are good but I give Mooney a edge and I think Mooney takes this one by 7 and becomes DIII state champs Good Luck to both schools
-
FatMattNot really sure why -- just a hunch -- but DeSales has been the one team that worried me over the past few weeks. They are not the same team that Mooney beat in week 2. Never liked the whole "not as close as the score would indicate" argument -- fact is, Mooney won by seven over a team that drove 180 miles to play the game.
That being said, there is something special about this year's Mooney team. I've seen it all year long, and the complete dismantling of Steubenville confirms it. I thought Mooney would beat Big Red, but I did not see them destroying them.
DeSales will put up a good fight early, but Mooney just has "it" this year . . . I got the Cards 31-10 (gotta throw in a Fox field goal!). -
AppleCharlie Brown for MVP!!!
seriously... the kid is THAT good! -
Cmhs74Just wondering, does anyone know what the forecast is for game time on Friday? Alot of posters complain about SQ always being on Mooney sites but he brings up loads of information and his opinion is one I like to hear. GoChiefs, I have no problem with posters from other schools coming on this thread or any other but if posts are to be made they need to refer to the thread title and not try to start arguments or accusations. Best of luck to Mooney this week, especially the Seniors, practice hard, injury free, and give all you have to give on Friday. Ring the bell one final time. GO CARDS

mlisi39Early forecast says 32 degrees and flurries with a 10 mph wind.
Could be a white field for 2 teams that love to run the ball.
reminds of Oklahoma v. Nebraska back in the days of the Big 8. -

How ironic that the coaches at Oklahoma and Nebraska went to Mooney right?mlisi39 wrote: Early forecast says 32 degrees and flurries with a 10 mph wind.
