WEEK 6: CAMPBELL MEMORIAL (5-0) AT (4-1) SALEM QUAKERS

  • reddevil90
Campbell pitched a shutout as the offense got back on track with an aerial attack in the driving wind. And the run game came alive with 200+ yards against a very strong defense in Labrea. Toothman and company are going to throw everything and the kitchen sink to sabotage our 7 game regular season win streak dating back to last year. And Salem is probably the most well rounded team Campbell will face this season. As a matter of fact Salem is almost a splinting image of the red devils. I'm hyped are you?? tell us what you think.

Both teams have played one common opponent...........Liberty. Campbell beat Liberty 15-14 in week three. Salem beat Liberty 33-20 last Friday. Salem's only loss came vs. Hubbard 31-14. Salem beat Girard in week one, although the Indians played most of that game without WR Landon Smith. Campbell played a very good game vs. Labrae this past Friday after two sluggish performances in wins over Liberty and Brookfield. Salem will be a good test for this Campbell team. Salem QB Toothman is a hard runner, tough to bring down, although he does not have the receivers he had last season. Campbell has very good speed and skill with as many as four athletes on the field on offense that can break a big one on any given play. Campbell has two very good linebackers in Sikora and Benedis leading a defense that has been improving each week. Both teams have very good size up front. Last season, Salem was the stronger team up front against an undersized Campbell line. But Campbell's line matches up well with Salem this season, at least in size. Both have good kickers which could be a deciding factor in this game. Campbell's Zudacov had two kickoffs for touchbacks last week. He has a big leg and can make a long field goal if needed. I believe this game will come down to which team wins the battle up front. This should be a very interesting game.

Salem did not play Girard week 1 this year....they beat Labrae...so they have 2 common opponents and they both handled Labrae and Liberty.
Campbell has done a great job of rebuilding their program and they are a great success story. The outcome of this game rest on what team proves to be the more physical aggressor. I think Salem will also benefit from having played West Branch and Hubbard two very physical teams up front. Salem has pretty much the same team they had a year ago (minus one very good athlete) and they were able to take it to Campbell.

Big dean, your absolutely right play in the trenches will go a long way in determining the winner. Salem has 4 returning starters and the new guy on their line who terrorized Campbell last year from defensive end. I am sure Campbell is bigger and will be more prepared for what kind of game this will be this year. I read in the Vindicator this morning that people should buy their tickets to Campbell/Girard welllllll this may be the biggest game on Campbells schedule and with a loss already to Hubbard, Salem is fighting for their playoff lives...they simply can't lose again.

I got my info from The Vindicator, which had Girard-Salem in week 1. But now that you mention it, I know you are right. So much for reliable sources at The Vindicator. Campbell is bigger, much bigger up front on both sides of the ball than they've been in years. The question is which team will win the battle in the trenches. Maybe Salem's strategy will be to run the ball, hoping to have some sustained drives resulting in scores that will take time off the clock while keeping the Campbell offense off the field. Labrae tried that vs. Campbell. It did not work. But Labrae is not Salem. This may well be the biggest regular season game in years for Campbell Memorial. The Red Devils played a very good second half vs. Labrae last Friday. Campbell's defense has really improved as the season progresses. As far as Girard goes, I don't think the Red Devils are focused on that game yet.

Campbell need to contain toothman and the receivers. Can Salem contain Campbell's offense? Campbell airs it out and runs very well. I would not look at the Liberty game or Brookfield. Campbell just was not in playing with passion. Also Campbell is for some reason a second half team. they just come out and dominate the second half. one game they didn't and that was liberty. i give Liberty credit there defense just did what they had to do. i don't know what way this will go but i have to give the edge to Campbell. As bigdean said there are 4 very dangerous players on the offense at all times that can can score in a matter of any play! As long as Campbell don't fumble they can put up alot of points in a hurry. they did alot of fumbling in those two games in the red-zone. Salem is going to bring it and its gonna be fun! Let the best team win!

Also one more thing nobody has mentioned campbell's first string defense pitched two shut outs the last two games. the only score was the week before and that was second and third string giving up the touchdown.

Should be a great game. Hopefully home field will tip the advantage for Salem--the Crazies will be out in force!

    GO SALEM!!

Salem has had trouble against teams with speed this year, plus they don't seem to have the confidence that they had last year. They return the core of a good team from last year but nobody has stepped up as the go to receiver for Toothman. Penick has not been the factor at receiver that everybody thought he would be. The special teams do not have the game breaking ability that they had last year (due to the loss of Eisel to graduation), and teams are keeping the ball away from the speed of Penick on punts and kick-offs. Defensive secondary is also an issue. Positives are the running ability of QB Toothman (who could line up as a fullback for many teams), and the play of lineman Mike King on both sides of the ball. Campbell is improved over an already good team from last year, and Salem is probably still a couple of ticks behind the team of last year with a few new players still learning the system. Salem's lack of game breaking ability (Toothman being the exception), and Campbells improvement over last year should make for a close game. Salem cannot afford to lose with the likes of Lakeview, East Liverpool, and Struthers (who are all playing well as of late) left on the schedule. 7-3 or maybe even 8-2 may not be good enough to make the playoffs in Region 11. I don't think having the home field will be an advantage for Salem. This game is going to be too close to call.

If it comes down to line play, give the edge to Salem --- strong and athletic; they completely dominated Liberty in the last 5 possessions each way. The Quakers seemed like they wanted to rest Toothman a bit last week, not nearly the number of carries as normal, but it was good to get Bailey and Noel a lot of reps, both are able to pop a big run anytime. The wideouts have speed, but if you focus on them too much we have gone to the tight end on several occasions. Linebacking corps should be back to full strength this week which will help. The secondary needs to rise to the challenge, and that could be the key. Hopefully we utilize some blitzes to force some decisions and quick throws .. should play to our hand. If we can prevent the 2 or 3 big plays that no doubt the Red Devils are capable of, we should be able to wear down Campbell and win this game.

PS -- always a highlight of the year due to the interest, knowledge, and posts from the Campbell faithful.

Memorial takes this game easily. Won't be surprised if they win by 2 TDs+

Salem's # 55 Mike King is the nephew of former Campbell Memorial linebacker Tim King, who played on the Campbell powerhouse teams of the late 1980's. Tim always played with a lot of intensity and would hit you like a ton of bricks. It's no surprise to me that his nephew is the player he is. He is an absolute beast, without a doubt the best two way lineman Campbell will face this season. Salem and Campbell Memorial both have passionate huddlers who will make this thread very interesting leading up to kickoff on Friday. And I am expecting many of the Campbell fans to make the trip over to Reilly Stadium, the very fine home of the Quakers. Both schools have stadiums and fans they can be extremely proud of. GO DEVILS !!!!!!!

Cool tid bid. Mike King is definitely a beast.

Im going to go on a limb here and take Salem 28-21. Toothman will be able to get the short yard conversions with his legs with no doubt. The key is to have long drives and keep campbell's offense off the field and cause turnovers.

    I'll take that bet.

I would not take any bet! this is the beauty of the game. it can go anybody's way at anytime.

haha no one is going to win this game easily buddy....its all about executing and playing to your strengths in big matchups. The young Hughes kid all but guaranteed a victory when interviewed by the Vindicator...he obviously needs some more experience doing interviews and with his talent level im sure he will get it.
Salem pounded the ball on the ground a year ago and bottled up Campbell's athletes to get the victory and like my mother always said if it aint broke then dont fix it!
Get your tickets soon I hear its going to be crazy in Salem come friday night!
  • reddevil90
Ja'les Hughes did not say anything about a guarantee. As i seen on the vindy was him saying is the teams goal are high. and there goal is 10-0 and a shot at being state champs! I'm glad he feels that way that's every teams goal. Campbell's been a easy win for good teams for the better part of 18 years other then 99! So they should set there sights to the sky and fight every game for that win. I am impressed with Salem and there Qb Toothman. He is every teams dream QB. But we have a very dangerous qb in Lester Hughes! He is Smart and does not take to many chances when it's not there. i don't think he has more then 3 Int's. But If there is a flaw in Campbell's talent its putting the ball on the ground. See most of those close games or low scoring games was not because Campbell could not score. It was they fumble a lot inside the 20. i wold say 70% of the fumbles where inside the 20 or less. So The Devil's cant afford to put it on the ground. Salem is not a team that you want to fumble 2 or 3 times this game. we would probably loose. They are a team that most definitely will be able to take advantage of our mistakes

This should be a great game!!
Campbell coming in 5-0 and Salem at 4-1!
Toothman vs Hughes, (both of em!)
    Should be a heavyweight bout.
I look for the game to be won, in one way. Up front. Don't get me wrong Campbell's line is decent, but i'll give the edge to Salem.
    Quakers 21 Campbell 16
  • reddevil90
Could very well be Spread. But Campbell's bigger up front and very experienced. Campbell played like a team looking for a new identity when Skevo went down week 2. he was the play maker the go to guy. but they hung on till they found the right combination. It started to with brookfield. and i cant say enough about campbell's defense the last 3 weeks. and there special teams is so much better then weeks one and two. don't forget we put a offensive beating on a very strong south range team. and shut down some great running backs when we had too! And i think this is going to be so close to call and it will comedown to who has the ball last.
  • soupcity99
Last year Salem ran over Campbell in route to victory. It looks like the red devils are alot bigger this year on both sides of the ball. Go devils!!!
  • ts1227
Should be a decent crowd for this one... the place I'm working for the time being as I finish up my research sells presale tickets, we'll see how fast they go this week!

Here is a huge test for the Devils. Toothman in my opinion is the White Tier Player of the year arguably. Take him away and Salem has a group of fine young men....but this kid motivates them and leads them with his determination. Campbell better figure it out real quick on how to contain him, because you will not stop him. Somehow you need to slow him down.

The devils are talented and they can win at Salem if they follow two rules again in my opinion only....ONE, hang onto the ball in the redzone. You cannot FUMBLE going in for a score because against this team you are not assured of getting there again. TWO, they need to play 4 qtrs of football. Not one half. Because against Salem...if you decide to start playing in the second half, you will be down by two scores going into the second half. You do not want that fellas.

This is a true test. This is the test win or lose that will determine the rest of the season. Even a hard fought loss gives me hope this team will push into the post season. Ofcourse the win is huge for point purposes and pride as well......but how they play this game from beginning to end will tell us pretty much how this team handles adversity. That in my mind is more important than anything given where they stand right now. Good Luck gentlemen.

Do I believe that? Well i would have took Campbell in a split second if Skevo didn't go down. But we have two very talented kids that don't see any offensive time and one plays some defense. #7 drove down the field with the JV team and they had some good hits on him and it just didn't faze him. I for the life of me don't know why they don't put Ja'les in slot and 7 in the backfield. but there is another dangerous weapon that has yet to see much playing time and that's #25. that kid is very speedy like skevo but smaller. I'm going out on this one and saying since this is the biggest game this year so far as in playoff points. we see them get into the mix. they already know Ja'les but they dont know 7 Shawndale Ray and 25 Charles Smith. And i have a feeling Campbell Huddlers we bring out all the arsenals early and often. we might finally get our wish to see them shine . There was a coach that did this back in 88 89 and his name is Ed Rozem for Campbell. There was two very talented kids that didnt see much playing time till mid way in the season. it Gave Patton a chance to rest more and we didn't miss a beat! Those two players was Karlen Adams. man that kid was a freak of speed. still to this day i have yet seen anyone play that fast. Then there was a kid named Deland McCullough. those two gave number 13 a much needed rest. I hope History repeats it self.

Campbell is not bigger up front, or more experienced. What are you talking about?
The defense should of clicked vs Brookfield, thats why people schedule them.
This will not be a barn burner, by any means.

Both teams return several starters from last season. Last season Salem beat Campbell 32-14. Salem was bigger up front, stronger up front, and more physical up front. They dominated the line of scrimmage from start to finish. The Salem offensive line opened up some holes for QB Toothman. And to be honest, Campbell had trouble tackling him. In fact, any team with a good running back last season gave Campbell fits. They were not a good tackling team. But they were young. They were not very strong. But they had good skill and good speed. This season Campbell is indeed bigger and stronger up front. But it remains to be seen if they are going to beat Salem on the line of scrimmage. Salem has some big kids too. These are a few of the Campbell linemen Salem will line up against on Friday.

    Tyler Abron 6-3, 290
    Shaq McWilson 6-3, 300
    Jose Martinez 5-10, 221
    David Guidos 5-11, 255
    Jose Pagan 5-11, 263
    Sean Burnett 6-1, 265
    Kendall Miller 6-1, 217
    Dennis Williams 6-1, 187

My guess is Salem will try to control the clock to keep Campbell's offense off the field, although they may throw the ball a little too, just to keep Campbell's defense honest. I am not sure Salem has faced a team with as much speed as Campbell Memorial, although Liberty does have some speed. Campbell can put 4 or 5 kids on the field on offense that are all capable of making a big play. The kicking game may also be an important factor in the outcome of this game. Both teams have good kickers. I do expect this to be a very interesting game. I am really looking forward to it.

I plan on getting to the stadium early. But can any of you Salem huddlers tell me the best places to park?
