Week 4 Campbell Memorial VS Brookfield

yianni koulianos was before my time. did he play in the early 60's or mid 70's cause i remember my dad talking about a yianni playing on Campbell. Also i seen this on Wfmj website today http://www.wfmj.com/global/category.asp?c=179433&clipId=5110746&topVideoCatNo=127564&autoStart=true. It's talking about taking parochial schools and putting them in a league for them. But they don't think it will ever happen and rightfully so if you ask me. But i like the idea they have is to not use there criteria in putting them in a division by enrollment. but in other criteria they are looking at. Like Mooney will probably never see a division below division 2. Well i know Steubenville big red would love that. lol But i thought i would ask what do you guys think since we are the only people here that talk about the upcoming game with brookfield and we are not on subject that much. I think its a great idea to put them in a division they should compete in and make it a even playing field!

My Vally sports has a Campbell brookfield video preview http://www.myvalleysports.com/content/highschool/myteams/schools/campbell/default.aspx

Yianni Koulianous, at least the one I speak of, played in the mid 1980's.

The Yianni Koulianous I am posting about played in the mid 1980's.
  • reddevil90
I was 12 or 13 at the time and only remember a handful of games that year. But my brother who has only missed a few games over 30 years remembers watching him play. Anyone ever went to school with a Michael Jackson or Rich Bowers and Tim Bowers?

Joey Kirila got hurt in the preseason with a ACL injury and who knows if he will be ready for this weeks game.

You may be correct. But I believe the running back that was injured was Joe Quinlan.
  • Ohio
There is no Joe Quinlan there is Jeremy and Jimmy. The runningback that got hurt was Joe Kirlia lol
  • BigDean1
You may be right about Kirila. But Joe Kirila's name was in the Brookfield-Jefferson Area game stats in The Vindicator this past week. I hope Kirila is healthy. Brookfield will need to be at full strength while playing their best if they are to have any hopes of staying with a very athletic and quick Campbell Memorial team.

    Good Luck Red Devils!

Hopefully this week we worked on our special teams (especially not fielding punts inside the 10 yard line) and our blocking and tackling. Our offense, IMO, needs to run the ball a little more than what we have thus far.
  • cmhs_pride
I still like Sonny's idea on how to run the offense this week but hey i am far from the coach.

The Yanni we are talking about I assume is the one that played for the 85' team as a senior. They went 8-2 and just missed the playoffs. Today, 8 teams make the playoffs per district. Back then only four did. We lost two heartbreakers to JFK and Struthers. Finished 5th in the standings and went 8-2 overall. The struthers game until this day was bull. I have never seen a worse call and spot on a ball then when we stopped Musolino behind the line of scrimmage on 4th and one and they spotted the ball as if he ran for a 4 yard gain.

Anyway, that team headed by Yanni Koulianos on the Oline and Dline began an 8 year run of very hard nose Red Devil football teams. Even the 4-6 87' team only gave up 119 points all season.

Good Luck this week Devils. Pound 'em.

I think its time to showcase other talent this evening!

Devils cut the turnovers= big win
lets get a shut out tonight! A great defense will win championships! Good luck Devils.
  • BigDean1
Campbell wins 22-7. But it was ugly. Too may turnovers and mistakes on offense. Although the defense played well, the kids in the secondary need to knock those balls down on 4th and long pass plays instead of going for the interception. One of those interceptions cost the Red Devils nearly 30 yards in field position. This Campbell team has too much talent to keep shooting itself in the foot on offense. Maybe the loss of Skevo Zembillias for the season means much more than we believe. The highlight of the win for Campbell was Ja'les Hughes' TD run of at least 70 yards. Some good blocking downfield helped him take it the distance. Richard Bledsoe had a fine game for Campbell. Alex Zudacov nailed a 37 yard field goal and had a punt of around 55 yards. The entire defense played well. But keep an eye on a couple of sophmores who played well for Campbell tonight. Defensive tackle Sean Burnett had a nice game as did David Horvath from his defensive end position. And watch out for another sophomore named Charles Smith who played some in the fourth quarter. Campbell is 4-0 but needs to step up the intensity and reduce those turnovers with some tough games coming up.
  • reddevil90
BigDean you are right Ugly! A win is a win. But a very weak team! We made ourselves look bad! How can you make the same mistakes over and over. Come on coach get them doing some extra laps or something! Defense did a great job and seems to be getting better but still tackling to high. By the way the face mask call was bull but we had the game anyways so no biggie. our offense is killing themselves. Nice to see Skevo on the side lines. felt bad for him you can tell he was hurting.
  • oldschoolreddev
Was it just me, or did we play like we wanted to be somewhere else? Zero emotion or hitting from the red devils. The first team defense played well, they bent but didn't break or panic on that first long drive. Special teams played well except for that breaking down on the pat. The turnover 's in the red zone has to stop. We will get our assess kicked if we do that against a good team.
  • soupcitysoldier
pathetic...absolutely god awful. we can sugarcoat this all we want, but that was terrible. zero intensity. i just dont think this teams got it...i see them rattling off 4 losses this year the way theyre playing. wheres the fire? its bad guys and im sick of watching it. the play calling in the first half is like were scared to lose...we need to wake up. girard labrae champion salem struthers will all be losses the way were playing...zetts better wake up too...his play calling in the first half is terrible. whats up with the power i and our predictability? do you really expect to beable to run the ball effectively like that when the team knows its coming? and you dont run one play action or anything to make the defense respect you? wake up guys...
  • reddevil90
Well I didn't want to admit it but after i slept on it guys we have a team that looks like they gave up and are just playing to get it over with. They don't look like the same team i seen over the first 2 games. But i will stop short in saying they are not as good as first thought. They are that's what is P i s s ing me off. I'm looking at other reasons why they look this bad. And i think we know where the blame is to begin!

Struthers Destroyed the same liberty team we got lucky with. We might need a big spanking to wake them up.

I am about as annoyed as anyone. I really am. As a fan...not a former player....as a football fan, I have questions for those who play or played because maybe i misunderstand the damn game since I didnt wear a helmet at the high school level.

One, when it is 4th down and the Qb throws a hail mary in the air 40 yards down field.....do you intercept it and then have to make up 40 yards just to get back to the line of scrimmage, or do you knock the ball down and take over on downs back at the original line of scrimmage 40 yards up field? Somebody explain it to me because maybe I am too stupid to understand common sense. Then to top it off.....it happened again later in the game!!!!!! Really????

Two, how much time does one need to get their ass out of the huddle and up to the line of scrimmage? I am curious because we look like we are on a nature walk when we leave the huddle and go up to the line. How many delay of games before that stops? Again, asking as a fan because maybe nature walking is part of the strategy and I am just too stupid to understand that.

Three, let me ask the players this....last night.....there were almost 4 or 5 fights and alot of trash talking. Really??? Do you guys think you looked that good that you want to taunt the other team? And for the kid who got in the coaches face.........I would have planted your butt into the ground and took the lawsuit. Who do you think you are? Former players....could you imagine doing that in your day? Go ahead and get in Coach Minnies face like that. Then deal with your dad when you got home. Unreal. Hats off to the head coach. He handled that alot better than I would have. I mean that kid ran up to him and went nuts nose to nose with him. No respect in todays kid...none. And we are suppose to deal with that by putting them in time out or we end up on Oprah accused of child abuse. Unreal.

Fourth, Tell me when we are going to be taught how to hold a football...I'm just wondering.

Sorry, no devil jacks last night and thank god because you don't deserve them. You guys flat out did not "play the game". Quit playing the song before you go out for the kickoff because you don't follow up on it.

People say I am harsh but damn fellas.....somebody who is way above me better get harsh or you will see us go 2 and 4 the rest of the way and no playoffs. How can you have so much talent on a team and play the way you have the last two weeks. No desire, no drive, no enthusiasm, no nothing. J'ales Hughes scores a TD....not one person runs up and congratulates him. The sidelines are a morgue the entire game and for that matter...so are the stands.

Sorry, I am not impressed....but you know what...I am impressed with the following

Number 77, 44, and soon to be the man number 25.......I love watching these sophomores play. They need to play alot more and then some. You three are the future and that is a good thing. You are a joy to watch fellas.

Also, J'ales and Richard Bledsoe...thankyou for playing hard last night. You guys show up every week.

David Benedis, outstanding play at LB last night.

Guidos, showed alot visibly sick on the sidelines and kept coming back. David is a gamer.

Bright spots in an otherwise horrible performance by the devils. Labrae is a few spots behind us in the computer. If you guys think you can play like that next week when they come in hungry and needing a win........Somebody better wake the hell up real soon.
  • reddevil90
Pride i can tell you football 101 is to not take the interception. Second It's the coaches. I don't care how people look at what i say! Like the coaches or not they are allowing this crap each week to happen. When a player screws up you take them to the side and explain not to do that. Man it was a sickening thing to watch a great and talented team falling apart each week. and the same players keep bailing out the slackers. i seen the kid that got into a shout match with the coach. If i was the coach he would sit next week or until he learns how to respect the coaches. The coaches better get these kids back before it is to late or is it to late. Don't know find out starting next week. these teams coming up are going to keep us in the playoffs or hurt us. I know it sounds bad but we might just need a spanking to wake everyone up! I was disappointed in taking #7 out after the fumble. Why punish him when the whole team does it all the time. Tell him what he did wrong tell him this is how you approach would be tacklers with the ball and send him back out. don't bench him. I don't know but I'm worried very worried going into week 5 and the last 5 games. Struthers tore up a liberty team that we by the way i seen it should have lost to.

Just a note for those that don't know. David was carted to the locker room in the 3rd quarter, and taken to St. E's. He tried to play with a concussion he got during the game.

Not very smart. Determination is always good but not over health. Glad it was caught before he took another hit in the head. Also would love to know why that one player got into with the coach...

Looking at what happened this weekStruther gave Liberty a beatdown 41-7 .... To me im thinkin there should be a Campbell vs Struthers Game of the week on Tv ? Should be a great game both teams playing great right now.

Well the thing was he didnt know he had it. He didnt even go down during the game he just started feeling funny but tried to battle through it.

The player that got heated with the coach was the kicker. Reason was on the kickoff there was a cheap shot taken on Sikora and Sudacov defended his teammate and took out the Brookfield player but was flagged for a personal foul.

I dont care who you are, you ALWAYS have your teammates back NO MATTER WHAT and flag or no flag thats what I wanna see from my team.

Sorry Coach, but 15 yards or not, your kicker showed he was a teammate and not just 'the kicker'.

Agree with me or not, I dont mind...but I commend him.

letsgodevils, I wondered about a possible concussion when I saw David with an ice pack on the back of his neck, slumped over a waste can on the sidelines. Let's hope he gets better soon. I did not see the cheap shot on Sikora. But I did see Alex on a mission to find Brookfield's #72 downfield after his punt, which was nearly 60 yards by the way. The fact is this Campbell team is not playing all that well right now. We're 4-0. Are we, the more knowledgeable fans getting a little frustrated expecting a big show on offense week in and week out? I feel the loss of Skevo Zembillias is having an effect on the offense, maybe in more ways than we believe. And with no disrespect to David Guidos, I feel the offensive line has not blocked all that well when we do try to run the ball. Those are some big kids up front. They should be opening some holes. Not many teams in the area have a right offensive tackle who weighs 290 and a left offensive tackle who is 300. One of our guards is 253. With the exception of Ja'les Hughes' 85 yard touchdown run vs. Brookfield, we did not run the ball well at all against Brookfield, which is not a very good football team, although they did play hardnosed football and did not quit. Ja'les ran for 94 yards on the night, with 85 of those yards coming on one play.

I suppose when a team like Campbell runs a lot of one back sets they can become a bit predictable on offense. But this team has three wide receivers on the field all capable of taking it to the house on any reception they make, and a quarterback who is one of the best athletes in the area, along with his brother who runs very hard for his size and is himself a threat when he catches a pass, we are expecting better results than we've had the past two weeks. When they do run out of the power-I formation, the play calling is very predictable. I say when we use that formation, get more creative with the play calling. Maybe we can change up the formations some to help the running game. Maybe getting Shawn Ray and Charles Smith involved in the offense a little more might give the defenses a little more to think about. Turnovers have really hurt the past couple of weeks. It's a good thing the opposition was not as formidable or we might be looking at a 2-2 record right now instead of 4-0. The way Campbell is playing right now, Labrae is a very big game for this team. I feel the last 6 games of this season are going to be very challenging, although Newton Falls has really fallen with the loss of two key starters for the rest of the season.
