WEEK 3: YOUNGSTOWN LIBERTY ( 1-1 ) AT CAMPBELL MEMORIAL (2-0 )

  • BigDean1
Campbell Memorial is 2-0 for the first time since 1999, having beaten two quality opponents. Liberty is 1-1, coming off a 33-7 win over Niles McKinley following an opening week loss to Youngstown East. I believe Campbell will face a Liberty team with more speed than Mineral Ridge and South Range. The Red Devils have scored 84 points in the first two games. Last Friday vs. South Range, the Red Devils scored 42 points for the second straight week but turned the ball over 4 times. Defensively, the Red Devils did a good job of slowing down the South Range running game but gave up some big plays vs.the pass.
Campbell should not take this Liberty team lightly. Your thoughts?

My thoughts are this will also be a thread of a bunch of Campbell people talking to themselves. I hope this forum grows bigger by the minute because man is it like pulling teeth to get people talking.

Even the JJ forum is dead since it went pay to post! i payed thinking most everyone would. well i was wrong. BigDean1 was the only one to post on my Campbell vs liberty thread! Campbell did better with the run with range!!! but i hope it is not like we stop the run but give up the pass and the next week we stop the pass but give 200 yards in 2q. consistent consistent consistent that's what we need. Campbell's offense is very special this year. we have 5 turnovers a dropped wide open i mean wiiiide open pass and still scored 42 points! now come on this offense is wicked and if they shore up the pass and don't turn it over can be the most dangerous offense Campbell has even seen hands down. Bold statement but IMHO and I'm sticking to it!!!!! Gotta go with Campbell this week and the next 7. This could be the first conference win since the early 90's MVC!!!!
  • reddevil90
Oh by the way the Vindy said our coach said #5 is not as hurt as bad as we thought and should be back soon. That's a good thing cause he deserves to play this year after all that hard work the last 3 years!!!! Im a number 5 fan all the way!!!!!

I admire your pride and confidence reddevil90. But you may be getting ahead of yourself here. Liberty is next. And Coach Sikora will emphasize that the Leopards cannot be taken lightly. Liberty always has good skill players and speed. And they will come to Campbell looking to avenge a loss to the Red Devils last season. Salem and Girard are very good teams. And Newton Falls will be tough. Struthers is always an interesting game. Campbell needs to execute just a little better on offense. I know, they've put up 84 points in two games vs. what many consider to be quality opponents. How much better can they execute? But there are too many dropped passes. Defensively they have given up too many big plays in the first two games. And they can tackle much better than they have so far. And that old school aggressiveness Campbell defenses were known for is just not there. I want to see some hitting out there. I want to hear the impact of those hits up in the bleachers. The offense is scary. But it will be interesting to see what may happen if they have a game where the offense is not clicking on all cylinders. I like this team. But let's take it one game at a time.
  • reddevil90
Yeah BigDean your right.. I seen it before in the early 90's !!!! I just got so pumped that we had 5 turnovers and still scored 42. but it would have been a blowout if Campbell would catch the easy pass. it looks like Campbell cant catch a cold on easy passes. But catch the most improbable catch. what gives. LOL a little joke here. Lester start making the passes harder for them to catch!!! But yeah BigDean lets see what happens this week and the rest of the season.
  • cmhs_pride
We did indeed drop some perfect throws in stride.....and then make an outstanding catch in the back of the endzone. Claxton is an athlete. He has a special ability...he just has to make the easy catches and the hard ones. Don't forget this is his first year back in awhile. He has been roaming basketball courts the past few years. I like him out there on both sides of the ball. He will only get better.

Number 5 will be fine...he will be back...he will be an asset on the field once again whether it is this week or next. All these guys have to remember one thing......Number 5, number 2, number 3, number 21, number 25, number 1, number 83, number 7.......all dangerous. Nobody needs to be the hero. Whoever has it that night.....his team should want nothing more than for him to tee off while they lead the way for him. Week one was number 5 and number 3.....last week was number 2 and number 83. The fact that defenses will not be able to contain all of them at once is what can make that offense the best ever. But there was an offense just like it in 94', who remembers that story?? You CANNOT feel like YOU DESERVE to score every time the opportunity presents itself. They keep away from that philosophy......look out.

Liberty...Friday....as the announcer would say, whose going to protect this house??????
  • reddevil90
LOL pride i remember the 94 team that was what i meant. That team had it all and it went down the tubes quick!!! This team does not seem like that! for one thing they all meet after who ever scores and high 5 each other. I think its a good thing for them to show who ever scores or gets the ball in the end to get the win is a special as the guy opening the hole for him or blocking down field! they show they care for each other they all know they got skill and speed and hands! I'm not worried about that cause i have not seen that yet thank god! the 94 team to me meant the end of Campbell football as we knew it at the time. that team with Wolf and company had a great chance to do what the teams behind them did! I just want to see the defense step up and get off the ball more quickly and rush the passer. i don't think they have more then one sack so far... if they do i don't remember. they did step up allot more this past week though! they had more stops and better tackles! but they still got allot of work to go before they get where they need to be. they don't have to be a great D just good enough to keep the offense on the field most of the game. bend but don't brake ill take that type of defense if it gets us deep into the playoffs.

Campbell's offense is good and can be great if we limit the mistakes. 42 points a game is nothing to sneeze at. We got better defensively but damn was that kid wide open on that go route in the slot. We lined up wrong on that one! This weeks game will be no walk in the park. If the Purdue kid is half as good as his daddy, then he is pretty damn good. If we stop him, then we will win. If not, it could be a long night.

By the way, dont count out Labrae. They played us tough last year and they will not be an easy defeat. Good Luck Red Devils.
  • reddevil90
Yes your right Oldschool! I talked to a few friends from liberty and they said Liberty is going to show the devils there first defeat!!!! I'm hoping that is not the case. I told them they better hold onto there hats cause you have a great back but the devils have many! Come on defense lets get this thing going starting now with liberty!!! Campbell is now a marked target and is no longer the underdog!!! That is good but also can be real bad. Focus devils each week!!!

That is very true Labrae is playing good football 1-1 and only losing to Salem by 7. Which is also a one many army in Toothman. Purdue is a very nice player and they will put points up by i doubt they can keep up with campbells depth in this one

Wfmj.com has a good write up about Campbell and a few of the players on there Inside high school football report http://www.wfmj.com/global/category.asp?c=179433&clipId=5089920&topVideoCatNo=127564&autoStart=true

Ball security, ball security, ball security! I will take the "bend but don't break" defense as long as the offense continues to pile up the points. I would like to see #25 get some touches, the kid showed last year as a freshman that he can be a special player. On defense, like you guys posted earlier, #44 and #22. Good luck Devils!

as we all know by now...skevo is out for the season. i know its a down day for campbell football, but lets not act like this is the end of the season. great player that will be missed, but we still have a great team. we will miss his big play ability, but we still put up 28 pts after he got hurt against a quality opponent. all is not lost. wish skevo the best. but this is no time to pity ourselves, we have a great team, but now its time for lester to step up. hes gotta make plays, no more excuses. this is his team...if he wants it hes gotta go get it. everyone needs to step. bledsoe has to step up, rushton has to step up, jales has too also. the defense as a whole has to shore up some holes. now is the time, we cant depend on 42 a night, the defense has to make some plays. great improvement on defense and special teams from week 1 to 2, but there are still mistakes. i applaud coach for making adjustments and constantly trying to improve. he exudes confidence and is constantly looking for perfection. im confident in coachs ability to lead us for years to come. but we cant make any more silly mistakes, no more lining up wrong no more lil red devil football mistakes. its week 3 we cant give up these big plays anymore...i put those mistakes on the coaches at this point, call a timeout if theyre misaligned. we cant have this anymore. no room for mental mistakes without one of our best players on the field. our season is just as bright as it was yesterday, we can still score at will, our margin for error just decreased though. weve got the horses. good luck boys keep up the good work...one a sidenote a friend told me they were at the gridiron meeting yesterday and heard something interesting. no more devil jumping jacks on the road after a win anymore, coach feels were rubbing it in the other teams face. at first i kinda understood his point, but i find myself disagreeing. thats a tradition that people wait around in the stands to see...and yes alot of teams get angry when we do it, but lets be honest there was a time when campbell people and our teams really could care less who got angry. we had such a brash bold winning attitude we didnt care if we pissed the other team off because we knew that not even the following year they werent going to be able to do a darn thing about it. some say its cocky, i say its confidence. its believing in yourself, in your team, in your community. that was a time when even though we were the smallest team, we were the bully on the block. no one wanted to play us, and we played whoever wanted a piece. they kicked us out of the mvc because they were scared of us, we were to big, bad, and strong. some might not like that attitude, but that attitude paid off with WINS. state final four appearances and conference titles...ill take that any day of the week. campbell people have a chip on their shoulder, and were dogged in every way by other communities around the area. they tear us down any chance they get...so were gonna make sure they know who beat them any chance they get. those pieces of .... from soup city gave you an L and dont you forget it. so being from campbell id like to see the jumping jacks after every win...those kids work hard and they should be allowed to do what red devil football players have been doing for a long time after wins.

As a former football alum, I say keep the devil jacks. That was a sense of pride and accomplishment after every hard fought win. If you don't do it on the road, then don't do it at home. I like what this staff has done, but it is not yours to decide. That is what traditions are all about. That is what we do. It is up to the other team to stop us from doing them. This is Campbell's tradition. Coach it is your responsibility to keep up the tradition not erase it. Hell I didn't hear anyone complaining.g when we were getting our assessing kicked. This one of the main reasons why former football alum don't come to the games, no respect for the past and its traditions.
  • reddevil90
Wow that is weird! Don't you think?
  • reddevil90
Also one more thing make no mistake I am one of the most dedicated red devil fans who ever went to a game i scream yell cheer and go nuts! Been doing it for years. before i never got a second look but now when i do that or say that's Bull sh et i get looked at funny like sit down and shut up! Bull don't come to the game if you cant cheer them on in your own way as long as it don't hurt or cause issues with the game itself. Plain and simple we have the team we been waiting for for ten damn years let them and the crowed be red devil football.

funny you say that...if you were at the game friday you may have noticed they did NOT do them after the win at home.

They actually havent done them on the road since Bayuk took over, hell before that there werent any wins to do it after...but it needs to continue at home. You are all correct. people stay after JUST to see that and it needs to continue.
  • reddevil90
Well that would explain it! If they have not done it in years cause they have lost allot of games. Then why would they bring it up and say there would be no Jumping Jacks. Unless the kids or someone said how come the last few years and this year we don't see the team do jumping jacks after a win? Hmmmm
  • sonnyblack
Devil Jumpin Jacks are just as much a part of Campbell football history as the alma mater. C'mon coach, these kids have busted their butts to bring back the tradition that is Campbell football, don't deny them.
  • oldschoolreddev
Let's go devils, FYI I was at the game. I didn't stay for the jacks. Just responding to what was said in an earlier post. I guess that I never paid attention to all of the changes that have happened over the years. I probably would never stay afterward anyway, unless it was for a regional title or something like that. I wonder if the boys "take the walk" on Thursday's? Good luck red devils!
  • cmhs_pride
I'm sorry but i completely disagree with taking away the Jacks. Completely. If another team cant handle it.....guess where they can go???? Go ahead.....take a guess??? We as fans have held out weathered a huge storm.....and they as players have been the laughing stalk for 15 years minus one...........A program rich in history I might add. Our one or two wins a year....or OK the 6 wins in 04' against pathetic teams......it was ok then right? But here we come again full head of steam and now it is time for the Valley to be offended again. I grow tired of tradition leaving us. I really do.
  • soupcitysoldier
i wasnt at the meeting...so i cant confirm coach said that but its from a reliable source. also my source told me that coach said something about struthers being upset after we did devil jumping jacks after our win last year. im sure he heard some groans from some old struthers friends...this may have less to do with the other teams on our away schedule and more to do with coach not wanting to show up his alma mater at the end of the year. so coach might be thinking lets just nip this now. but coach the jacks gotta stay...if your campbells coach you gotta show your allegiance, no one hear cares if you graduated from struthers your a red devil now...so forget about them and bust out the jacks again....i hope to see them at salem ;)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I would like to see the Devil Jumping Jacks back also. But on a sad note, longtime Campbell Memorial alum and fan Ed Such Sr. passed away earlier this week. Ed was a fixture at Campbell Memorial football games for years. He was 83. I worked with his son Ed Jr. at the #2 seamless pipe mill at the Campbell works until it was shut down in the mid 1980's. Ed Jr. was also a fine defensive lineman for Campbell in the late 1960's and early 1970's. It was his father, Ed Sr. who instilled that Campbell pride into him. His grandson Mark was also a very good player for Campbell in recent years. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Such family.
