WEEK 2: SOUTH RANGE AT CAMPBELL MEMORIAL

  • BigDean1
Campbell Memorial and South Range are coming off wins in week one vs. quality opponents. The Raiders come to John Knapick Field for their first ever visit. South Range will come in with a lot of confidence after soundly defeating Warren JFK in their opener. They will face a Campbell Memorial team with an offense that argueably may have more speed and skill than any team in the area. What are your thoughts on this game?

    Good luck red devils!!!!!!

Coach Yeagley didn't schedule JFK and @ Campbell Memorial without knowing he had a team that can compete with both clubs. Many have already said that and I agree. Last year was very uncharacteristic of a Raiders football season for the past 15 plus years. This is going to be a very big test for the Red Devils. Offensively they have more weapons than anyone in the area. I will argue that with anyone who cares to. But they have to play the run more aggressively like they did in the second half of the Ridge game. The adjustments worked for the most part. Caused two turnovers and limited them to one score on a ridiculous 4th and 15 pass play. That cannot happen in this game.

Range returns alot of young men playing for one of the best coaches in that division in the state. We have to continue our offensive juggernaut and we MUST get to the ball quicker on special teams coverage. Tackle Tackle Tackle.

I look for this game to be very close and a ton of computer points goes to the winner as the season goes on in my opinion. Just like the Ridge game. But I feel this one is a bit more important as I think South Range is one step ahead of Mineral Ridge this season.

im really not sure what the word is on range this year...anyone have info regarding them...what do they do offensively? i think the changes on defense and inserting horvath may make a big difference. we can score. but can we stop them is the question. this is a huge game for computer points...south range is expecting to win this game. we have always said that south range doesnt play anyone and we wanted a shot at them. and now we have the chance...lets see what we got.

South Range runs the wing-t and plays the 50 defense. They have decent size up front and are returning 23 lettermen this season, including five starters on offense and seven on defense. In Range's win over JFK, they took advantage of their opportunities. South Range had just 30 plays from scrimmage in the game, compared to 67 for JFK. Range rushed for 132 yards on 21 carries and passed for 107 yards on 3 completions. Running back Floyd Kenney was key for Range vs. JFK, as he rushed for 100 yards on 20 carries and caught a 38 yard touchdown pass from QB Buzzacco. Defensively, South Range allowed a 70 yard touchdown pass, although JFK was just 7 of 20 passing in the game. JFK rushed for 175 yards on 47 carries. South Range forced four turnovers in the game, two fumble recoveries, and two interceptions. Range did not have any turnovers.

South Range was very disciplined, did a good job of taking care of the football, and made the most of their opportunities like you said. JFK looked very sloppy, and if that continues it will be a long year. When South Range needed to make a play, they did. They were also bigger than JFK, and their line did a good job. However, take away some really sloppy turnovers and it is a different game. I will take Campbell in this one.

BigDean, your exactly right...South Range has been running the Wing-T since they started playing football in North Lima. I think most coaches will agree that South Range under coach Yeagley are one of the area best coached teams. Case in point, they didn't make many mistakes against JFK, and they were oportunistic in taking advantage of Kennedy's miscues. I'm not sure that those play numbers from week #1 are accurate. JFK had more plays in the first half, but South Range had the ball for something like 18 of the 24 second half minutes. That included a very impressive 20-play, 91 yard march that ate up something like 10 minutes between the third and fourth quarters. Watching Campbell and Mineral Ridge on TV Friday night, I would say that is exactly what the Raiders must do in order to beat Campbell. Long drive that keep the Red Devils offensive skill players off the field. Here is a link to more information on South Range:

Thanks. Now we know the the Range has some huddlers. Morgans, I got those play numbers from the Vindicator box score of the game. So, they may not be totally accurate. I am sure South Range will come to Campbell fired up and ready to play. I expect Campbell to be ready for them. I wish it were Friday.

Whoa !!!! We've got some huddlers from The Range. MorgansRaiders, you are probably correct that the stats I provided may be a little short of accurate. I got them from the Vindicator box score of the game. And history says that the Vindy can sometimes get things wrong :) I did look those stats over two or three times before posting them. Regardless, I am looking forward to a great game this Friday. I don't believe SR and CMHS have ever met in football. Both squads are well coached. Both have some very good players. Campbell may have more speed and skill than any team in the area............in any division. I know, that is a bold statement. But defensively, the Red Devils will have to stop the run for four full quarters against a South Range offense that is very efficient at running that Wing-T. I really would like to see this game bringing the fans out from both communities. I say forget the Canfield Fair for three hours or so and enjoy some great high school football. Campbell has a large stadium for a smaller school, nearly 7,200 seats. It would be great to see it filled to near capacity. GO DEVILS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having been at the South Range - JFK game, I can tell you that this Raider team is extremely disciplined and well coached. They won't beat themselves.

True, JFK did shoot themselves in the foot on more than one occasion, but South Range controlled the line of scrimmage and contained JFK's speed to the outside. IMO, this Raider team is for real.

    Good luck to both squads.

Should be a good game. It will be interesting to see which style wins. Good luck red devils.

I've had the pleasure of seeing a couple games at Campbell's beautiful new stadium. One of the nicest stadiums in the Mahoning Valley!!! I don't think the Raider fans will stay away despite all of our farm boys being at the Fair. Raider fans are very dedicated and follow the team pretty well. There is a time for plowin' and a time for football! Yes, hopefully it will be a great game. JFK and Campbell are needed on the schedule by SR in order to prepare the Raiders for the ITCL with players like Dan Skiba and Carter Hill. I just hope the Raiders can keep it close and find a way to scratch out another W. Good luck to both teams, but.......
    GO RAIDERS!!!

coach believes we can play ball control with them...were gonna try and combat there ball control offense by doing the same. were gonna slow it down and bank that we can out last them in the fourth quarter. range wont be expecting our power i for four quarters...we expect them to play conservative and zone us up. they dont plan on going man theyre not stupid. but theyll be surprised when we dont take the bait and try to play smashmouth right back at them. theyre gonna try and force errors with our aggressiveness. at least this is what i was told yesterday.

I'm new to this forum and was a follower of JJ sports forum. I posted allot under egnin1. But i hope to see the good people from Campbell fill the seats up and also south range. I was at the ridge game thinking OK i will see a much improved Campbell team on the field. But what was that? Shocked!!! ridge was not a joke. if this was last year we might have made it a game but I'm sure we would have fumbled a few to give them the game!!! that was Campbell's problem last year. not that they was not good they had problems with penalties and coughing up the ball!! this team i seen at ridge is almost a reincarnation of old. I'm stoked about the weapons we have. ridge just could not focus on one they had to focus on everyone that touched the ball. If this team can get the D to play sound and the offense continues to hold onto the ball we could be seeing a nice run into the playoffs. to early yet but man you can not say that this offense is a scary as any team in the area if not better. Go devils!!! And good luck South Range.
  • tsst_fballfan
    Good luck Range from Smithville!
  • reddevil90
I'm gonna have to go with the devils on this! reason I'm from Campbell and of course ill pick them. but you can not deny that they can score fast and often! ill go with a score of devils-35 and south-32. I know as well as anyone that south range is no joke and can score on the ground and through the air! the air attack was not there with ridge other then when we got caught out of position on 4Th and 15. south can throw and will throw at times. Campbell's big if is there special teams and there d. i like the fact that the D got it together for the most part in the second half at ridge but the special teams didn't tackle all night. get that fixed and Campbell is as good as any in the area if not better. there offense is a scary one. I have not seen that kinda speed since Carl Adams and Patton! Good luck both teams. Go devils!!!

I am all fired up. I hope mother nature does not spoil the evening with thunderstorms and lightning delays. Good Luck Red Devils !!!!!!

If campbell turns the ball over they lose bottomline ... range is very disiplined
  • reddevil90
Campbell is Disciplined and did not turn the ball over at all last week if I'm correct! they did fumble but there speed allowed them to get it back in a hurry! I know people always say speed Kills but i seen speed before and it don't mean nothing unless you are coached good and have the line to utilize that speed! I believe Campbell has both.

With this rain i can see a score of like 20-14 just depends who wins the upfront battle. Also if i was range i would just kick the ball out of bounds and make them drive rather then giving one of their weapons to take one to the house early

Yes Sr cant agree with you more!!! But They both pass well and can both run very well! So who ever wants it more will win! I'm up in Wintersville ohio so I don't know what the weather is going to be like when i get in Campbell tonight! I know it was raining like cats and dogs about 20 min ago! so if its a quick rain like here the ground at Campbell stadium is as good at draining as any and will more then likely run off and keep the ground sorta dry. We will see in about 3 hours from now!

Campbell wins 42-21...but it comes at a cost. skevo zembilas appeared to suffer a bad knee injury, one of campbells best players. xrays dont show a break, but they cant do an mri until tomorrow. pray for the best, hes a major major weapon.
  • BigDean1
For the second week in a row, Campbell's offense put up 42 points against a quality opponent. South Range is certainly a fine team. But as I said in a post earlier this week, Campbell argueably may well have more speed and skill than any team in the area. Although Zembillas went down in the second quarter, Campbell still had enough weapons to
pull away from the Raiders. I believe the crowd at this game was the largest ever in the newly renovated stadium. South Range brought alot of fans. And needless to say, they have a great marching band. Next up for Campbell is another home game vs. Liberty, a young team that should never, ever be taken lightly. Good Luck to South Range the rest of the season.
