Looks like if the Eagles lose this weekend Heckert will be named the GM of the Cleveland Browns. Still a possibility that Will Lewis is hired in a lower capacity role.

Take it for what its worth!

I like this. A modern day draft genius!! I called this before Christmas!!

Why can't Holmgren perform the duties of the GM? Isn't that what he was brought in to do? Find players? If he is going to let Heckert do it, then why didn't the Browns just save themselves money and give Heckert the job outright, and just cut out the middle man?

This pretty much confirms that Holmgren emasculated Mangini in their meetings because the rumors were Heckert wouldn't take the job because of Mangini.

You would have to think Holmgren told him Hecket in no uncertain terms that the days of Mangini's diva behavior and tendencies were over and he had nothing to worry about.

Holmgren is going to perform every duty possible, but is going to do the best he can to surround himself and this organization with some of the best talent evaluators there are. Heckert is only 42 years old, which potentially means longevity with this organization. Holmgren is 60+ and may not want to be involved in this game, or this town forever, so its nice to hire a well respected guy in Heckert that could potentially be a part of the organization for the next 20 years.

Here's a small clip of what he actually found in a few of his drafts with the Eagles. Talk about some diamonds in the rough!

***Heckert currently serves as general manager for the Philadelphia Eagles. However, the title is a bit misleading as his current role is more of the advisory form with Andy Reid. Heckert’s main duties fall within the realm of player personnel with a large focus on scouting.

But despite his admitteldy vague role with the Eagles, the team considers Heckert to be one of the top executives in the NFL. He is currently in his eighth season with the team and has been promoted multiple times in various positions within the league. The Eagles tout Heckert’s biggest strengths pertain to the NFL Draft and the activities that lead up to said weekend. Heckert’s first draft in Philadelphia – 2002, late-round draft position - netted the team Lito Sheppart, Michael Lewis, Brian Westbrook and Sheldon Brown. When the Eagles were desiring playmakers to help quarterback Donovan McNabb, Heckert landed tight end Brent Celek (fifth round), wide receiver DeSean Jackson (second round) and running back LeSean McCoy (second round).

    Not too bad.

Working for Holmgren probably outweighs dealing with Mangini in Heckert's mind. As far as why the Browns brought in Holmgren it is a common NFL business model to have one man in charge and those working under him in various capacities (see Miami). The Browns also need credibility and Holmgren brings it. Heckert may be good at what he does but he doesn't exactly get your blood pumping like having Holmgren does.

Heckert also supposedly will have to have final say on decisions or else he would not have been able to come to Cleveland simply to do the same thing he did in Philly.

I guess the way I look at it is that Holmgren has basically taken the owner's position, so to speak. Many of the decisions that would usually be made by a competent owner are going to be made by Holmgren instead. Lerner still controls the purse strings, but Holmgren makes the day to day operating decisions.

I don't know much about Heckert, but from what I have read he sounds like another good football mind.

Finally, The missing piece of the Lerner,Holmgren,Mangini train wreck. This should be entertaining. LOL

If you dont see the problems here, then you dont know about multi-million dollar egos. Pull up a seat and watch. It should be very interesting.

    This is a great move.

Everyone will know their roles and if the only person who will complain (Mangini) does come out with complaints he'll just be fired and we will move along. He knows his role as well as any other member joining the Browns FO.

HaHaHa Yea everyone knows that the Browns front office has a reputation of being the best.LOL.

Hmm did we ever have any guys with even close to the resume's of the guys that are being brought in?

    Nope, keep reaching though.

Your jealousy is showing it's ugly teeth again. It's OK to be envious.

This is another great hire if it happens. This regime is shaping up to be a very football smart group. And that is something we've needed for a long time.

Whats Holmgrens resume? He won a super bowl with Farve in his prime and made it to another one, only to get his ass handed to him by the STEELERS.
  • devil1197
He got his ass handed too him? Maybe by the refs and the Steelers needed a trick play to boot.

I'd hardly call that an ass kicking since I was there in person watching it.
  • royal_k
That SB was the biggest joke of all SBs. The only ass that got handled was the refs by the squeelers after the game LMFAO!!

It's good to know a steeler's fan like Al is more interested in our team rather than his. :)
