By taking less, he allowed other players to take more. It will probably be a wash in total player income by the end of the contracts. Also, dynasties are great for the league income in terms of ratings and endorsement deals. I think it's a little shortsighted to look at Durant's income just in terms of salary over 2 years.Laley23;1861292 wrote:Has nothing to do with that, and everything to do with maximizing your worth for thennion, and the lesser players. Durant probably didn't make any friends with this, but nobody will say it publicly. It's just not something players usually do. -

Especially when iggy and curry are executive committee members of the union.Laley23;1861291 wrote:I don't get how the players are ok with this? They fight for money, then a guy takes less than max. The union should be pissed at him. They usually don't let players take significantly less than the most they were offered, unless the fit/city isn't the desired place. -

I don't disagree here. He always puts teams in compromising situations and seems to do nothing to help. I just can't get behind the "he should take less money." Who are we to tell somebody that they should take less money? I also think as a union member (first VP) it's a conflict of interest for him to take anything less than his max worth.Al Bundy;1861282 wrote:With his Nike money, he could easily take less and not miss it. I get taking the max when you are young, but the guy is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. When he goes into whining mode in February that they can't make roster moves, just remember how he handled this compared to others.
That's not the point of the players union. You want every player to take in the max offer they can get, especially your best players, so you can shift the median salary of the entire league upward. When every player is taking their best offer, they can use those numbers in the next CBA negotiations. The 2nd best player in the NBA accepting Harrison Barnes money (well below his worth), so a couple role players can make an extra few million is not the purpose of the union.Al Bundy;1861304 wrote:By taking less, he allowed other players to take more. The next CBA isn't for awhile, but the owners have been getting worked in those negotiations. They need to start taking notes and stand firm next CBA, before they pretty much give away all of the control to the players. -
Laley23Not to mention, GSW had Bird rights to Durant. They could've signed all 3 of them, just a bigger hit to the luxury tax/salary cap hit. All Durant did was weaken a union Jenis a part of, so his owner could save some money.

Not that it matters, but the Warriors don't have Bird rights to KD.Laley23;1861312 wrote:Not to mention, GSW had Bird rights to Durant. Wasn't he suppose to make his decision today? Now his agent says it was originally Thursday but maybe not.wildcats20;1861335 wrote:Not so fast.

"That was the goal, but now we've got to kind of regroup here a bit," he told the Globe. -

Yeah it was supposed to be today. ESPN jumped the gun and reported info from a source as fact. But it is Boston after all.friendfromlowry;1861345 wrote:Wasn't he suppose to make his decision today? Now his agent says it was originally Thursday but maybe not.

like_thatSo basically the players tribune needed a few more hours to edit Hayward's article.

like_thatAlso, LOL at Otto Porter getting a max salary. Has there been a worse player offered a max?

The money is crazy, regardless of whether it's there or not for the teams. Crazy good set up for players when a guy like Porter can get a max deallike_that;1861389 wrote:Also, LOL at Otto Porter getting a max salary. Has there been a worse player offered a max? -

He's actually a very good player.like_that;1861389 wrote:Also, LOL at Otto Porter getting a max salary. Has there been a worse player offered a max?
I would say Kobe's last deal with the Lakers was far worse. Gilbert Arenas's contract was also worse, by a mile.
Contracts that were definietly worse than Porter's:
Shawn Kemps Cav contract (7 yrs, $100 m)
Allan Houston's NYK contract back in 2001
Kobe's
Arenas
Noah's NYK contract PUKE
Lou Deng's and Mozgov's contracts with the Lakers last season just LOL
Batum's Hornets contract 5 yr $120M
I actually think the Nets did the Wiz a favor by getting him to sign a 4 yr, $100 deal. If he had held the wiz's feet to the fire, he would have gotten the 5 yr $128M contract. He's their 2nd best player behind Wall IMO. -

Meanwhile KD fucks around and is worried about Lacob's checkbook. SMFHIronman92;1861399 wrote:The money is crazy, regardless of whether it's there or not for the teams. Crazy good set up for players when a guy like Porter can get a max deal -

Laley23There is zero chance Porter is better than Beal. None.

Well depends on what you're looking for. Porter is a great wing player [elite defender and knowndown 3 pt shooter]. Beal has one season where he's played more than 55 games and is a mediocre defender. I will say, beal is a solid rebounding guard which I appreciate. I think it's more of a discussion than you're making it out to be.Laley23;1861472 wrote:There is zero chance Porter is better than Beal. None. -
Laley23If Otto Porter is elite, Beal is not mediocre on D. But in reality, they are both pretty mediocre as the numbers show. And while the voting means jack when Thomas gets a vote...neither even got 1 for all defense, which included about 50 players receiving at least 1 vote.
The health thing is a real argument, but I don't see one elsewhere.
Beal Drtg is 106.5 while Porter is 107.2. A .7 difference actually in favor of Beal.
Meanwhile, Porters offensive numbers drop drastically (eFG%, TS%, offRTG and netRTG, when Beal is on the bench, and he is a more focal part of offense with higher usage rate. Beals stay the same when Porter is out. Go up in some cases and down a bit in others. -

For the record I like Porter, and think Washington has to keep him. But, I have liked Beal since HS and he hasn't disappointed, aside from health.Commander of Awesome;1861584 wrote:All solid points. -
wildcats20Just saw this on the bottom line on ESPN...
According to Woj, the Pacers offered PG to the Warriors for Klay Thompson. It also said that the Warriors denied it ever happening. But holy shit. -
Commander of AwesomeAs a guy who loves baseball analytics and advanced metrics but also doesn't think a truly elite basketball player should almost always scuffle out in the playoffs, this article really some up my feelings on CP3:

That was a great article. The interesting part was that Paul is analytic-wise super-elite simply because he goes all-out all the time, but when it comes time for the playoffs when everyone is doing that, his advantage is gone and he winds up losing that edge.Commander of Awesome;1864868 wrote:As a guy who loves baseball analytics and advanced metrics but also doesn't think a truly elite basketball player should almost always scuffle out in the playoffs, this article really some up my feelings on CP3:

I really liked the part about defense, I've never considered him a good defender despite all his accolades. This article summed it very well why he's an ineffective defender.Heretic;1864874 wrote:That was a great article.
