Thom Brennaman said it over the air that he was told this by a scout.....then went back and recalled the Brewers people speaking about him moving to 1st early in the season.

True or not, it's the only thing that maybe makes any sense to me

Tribe looking for a catcher that can hit rather than a guy to rotate through the 1st Base and D H spots.

    (No knock on Ironman)

They may very well have told him they weren't positive what 2017 would hold, but why would you risk a guy vetoing a deal by telling him he'd be playing a position he didn't want to? That would be stupid. He would beat out Gomes easily.

I think he wanted more money, Indians told him no, so he pouted and vetoed it.

Maybe so but what is a few million if he's the guy you want?

Strange as hell to me. Gotta move on. It will be funny if the Indians win it all.

Agreed. He had a quote saying when the real reason comes out everyone will agree, but who knows when that means. Can't imagine why someone wouldn't want to go to a contender.

Hopefully they are still looking for moves before tomorrow at 4. Perez did have a hit today and 2 walks. #progress

Hey, these things work out sometimes. The Nationals traded for Brandon Phillips and he nixed it like a baby not wanting to go to a definite contender...Nats moved on a got Daniel Murphy. Murphy might be the NL MVP right now.

The Brewers can't be happy with this as it sounds like they were getting some highly touted prospects.

The GM and the 1,000's of GM wannabe are furious, but the crowd today gave him a standing ovation

Buster Olney on SNB said it fell out because Lucroy wanted some type of playing time guarantee next year and the Indians said the problem was on the Brewers end and decided if he didn't want to be there then they didn't want him.

So he's passing up a chance to win a championship for what he believe is more guaranteed playing time will result in a bigger contract? I terribly disagree with him. Nothing beyond sucking ass terribly next year for whatever team is going to keep him from having virtually endless money for life....this might be his only chance to go for it all. I'd guess him sucking over 500+ plate appearances for any team giving him that guaranteed time would hurt him more than sucking say for 350 PA sharing time routinely with Indians.

I just think sometimes these players think too damn much and miss out on obvious choices.

Sorry for cluttering up the Indians threads with Lucroy talk...I won't speak another word of him.

I think you can probably blame Lucroy's agent as much as anyone.
But truthfully, the Tribe is a bunch of guys who are team players, and focus on winning first and their contracts later. I'm not sure how a guy who's focus is about how much he's going to be paid two years from now fits in. If a chance to get to the playoffs and the World Series for possibly 2 years, a chance to work with an elite pitching staff, and play for Tito Francona isn't enough...if your so unconfident in your abilities that you're afraid that because they didn't guarantee you'd be the starting catcher....well, maybe you aren't a good fit after all.

Unless the Rangers bail him out Lucroy better hope he balls out so the Yankees need him or a market like that, the catching scene is shit right now but in 2 years it might not be. If the guy was worried about getting paid earlier then the contract he signed he should've kept that to himself and forced that issue in the off season.

I heard the same thing. Basically, he wants to be a catcher. Gomes coming back complicates that when the Tribe wouldnt guarantee it (and they shouldnt). This is just an unfortunate circumstance.

While Lucroy taking a year off from catching (everyday) next year (if he did) probably doesnt hurt his value as a FA catching...we dont know that for sure. I would probably choose a chance at a title, but when you think about this more, I can see where he is coming from. He has great numbers for a catcher, and would be compensated as such as a FA. He moves to DH/1B for a year...not so much. His numbers at those positions is well below average. He led the league in doubles, but outside of that, his power numbers arent great for a 1B/DH. Long term, he and his agent do owe it to themselves to thing about that.

53 doubles in a season, hard to fathom

I don't get where this thing fell apart. Gomes hasn't squared up a baseball since early 2014. In what world is Lucroy not the best option at catcher. Let him catch for this year and next and let him walk. Just tell him he's our starting catcher next year...because he would be.

This whole episode is cause for major concern about Lucroy. It shows that he is an extremely selfish player and that he is afraid to compete with Gomes. I would have hated to see this team bring a cancer into the mix.

Let him go to Texas, where catchers go to DIE....I would welcome him with open arms if they revisited the deal though.

Yup, 1st inning Salazar working his magic again...goddamnit!
