adalius thomas is going to be released. any interest? good pass rusher when he played. wonder if he still has some in the tank. -

Early guesses as to where he lands according to Adam Schefter is the Jets (why not, they are signing everyone else) and Dolphins.Caponeblows12 wrote: http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d817cdf0e&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true

BR1986FBThomas is pretty much done. He's a situational player. I'd rather see a younger guy get the PT. If we were one player away I'd be for it.

j_crazyMiami is about to release Smiley. Would there be any interest from the Browns?

BR1986FBLet the fanboy "love" and "we gotta get this guy" comments commence...
Cowboys ILB Bobby Carpenter's days in Dallas appear to be numbered.
Carpenter, the No. 18 overall pick in 2006, only played on nickel downs behind Bradie James and Keith Brooking last season, struggling both in pass coverage and against the run. He'll likely lose those duties immediately to rookie Sean Lee. The Cowboys couldn't even get a seventh-round pick for Carpenter during the draft, so he may wind up being released outright.

better off if he moved a 4/3 teamBR1986FB wrote: Let the fanboy "love" and "we gotta get this guy" comments commence...

sleeperThe only guys I want from Ohio State are Troy Smith and Anthony Gonzalez.
And Beanie.
And Tedd Ginn.
GOAT offense. -

I was very excited when we made this pick. This guy has great potential to be a #1 reciever.Sonofanump wrote: http://www.carltonmitchell.net/combine/
This guy looks like a #1 receiver in the making. Not saying he is one now. That is something not on the team currently. Mo Mass is a #2 or #3 type guy. Beyond that, nothing else on the roster gives any impression of a NFL starting WR.
As far as Thomas goes, I think he would be a good pick up. Never injured and would add some much needed depth. -
jmogI'm the biggest OSU fan in the world, and I do NOT want Bobby Carpenter.
He's a 4-3 OLB, he would SUCK in our defense. -

They are also one of 8 teams to contact the agent of Alan Faneca. -
BR1986FBIt's now down to six teams on Faneca. Faneca's agent has said to want a "multi-year deal" and the Browns may be willing to do it "if realistic." I think this would be a mistake because his play has declined.
I think he ends up in Arizona if Whisenhunt wants him. -
bases_loadedThoma is the worst punter OSU has had in the Tress era. I know its just a tryout but blahhhh.

I think this kid makes the team and will add depth to our secondary. He had a pretty good career at Clemson.BR1986FB wrote: Here's a newer list of the Browns' UDFA's...

Still a pro-bowler last year....to say he wouldn't be an upgrade to this line, especially since it looks to be geared towards the run game is lunacy. Not to mention that Mangini knows what he's getting in him. He also provides leadership and could help the new kid from ASU along.BR1986FB wrote: It's now down to six teams on Faneca. Needless to say, the Browns would greatly improve the trenches if they managed to sign Faneca and Henderson -

Not really "lunacy." Faneca made the Pro Bowl on name recognition last year. Just like Jonathan Ogden did a few years ago. Is he a step up from what we currently have? Probably but not a whole lot.krazie45 wrote:

And riddle me this, if Faneca has a lot left why would the Jets, a team willing to go out and get whatever/whoever they want to make their team a Super Bowl contender, sign a washed up Ladainian Tomlinson yet let an effective Faneca go? -
OhioStatePride2003
I agree 100%. While I agree with BR that he ultimately ends up with Arizona because of Whisenhunt and the Steeler connection, he would be an upgrade to our line. Even if it's just from a depth perspective.krazie45 wrote:

Henderson is 31, but would definitely would be an upgrade to our DL. I think having him in place when we draft our younger D Lineman next year could be a key to bringing along the younger D Lineman. (Note: Upgrading our D Line should be top priority in next year's draft in my opinion)
Also, I think Chris Hovan could be a nice addition to our roster as well. I know that we're going to go young, but I think Hovan and Henderson would provide great veteran leadership to the younger players.
Let it be known, I'm not familiar with what defensive systems Hovan and Henderson have played in, but I've watched them both play the last few years and they're definitely great players. -
Big Red MonsterI woud love to se Faneca on the line to go along with Mack and Thomas.
-
BCBulldogI've met Carpenter and liked him. I love the Buckeyes and thought he was great when he played there. Hell, I am even friends with one of his cousins. But, absolutely no way do I want him in Cleveland. He has underachieved and it is the wrong fit regardless.
-
WriterbuckeyeCarpenter needs to try his luck in a 4-3 defense to see if he might have better success. Cleveland is NOT the place for him.
As for Henderson, didn't he play in a 4-3 system? If so, I'm not sure he'd be a good fit for Cleveland, either. -
sleeperCan someone briefly explain why putting a supposed 4-3 guy into a 3-4 matters? I honestly don't know, because I know nothing about football. It seems to me if they are an intelligent athlete, with a strong skill set, they can be put in any system and succeed.
Thoughts? -

in a 4-3 you have 4 D-lineman who start with their hands on the ground and basically always rush the passer. They plug their lanes on running plays and allow the LBs to fill the gaps.sleeper wrote: Can someone briefly explain why putting a supposed 4-3 guy into a 3-4 matters? in a 3-4 you have 3 D-lineman in the dirt and 4 LBs with 2 of those LBs playing the outside and either rushing the passer or dropping into coverage. A 3-4 can be a more confusing defense to read, but also is tougher for a LB to have to play. They have to have a much wider skill set.
The D tackles in a 4-3 have 2 and they can be leaner and be able to rush the passer more. In a 3-4 you have a DT/Nose tackle who is more of a space eater who needs to be able to create double or triple teams so the running game doesnt have huge lanes to run through.
That was a brief synopsis and probably pretty bland and vague. -
pkebkerI have always understood why switching from a 4-3 to 3-4 effects lineman, but it doesn't make much sense to me for LB. A LB should be able to both drop into coverage, stop the run AND be a good pass rusher. Both systems include LBs doing all 3. So I can't see why it appears to be such a big deal for LBs.
Now for the DL, its more of a size/quickness thing. And basically understanding their role. In a 4-3, they are more of a pass rush (quickness), while in a 3-4, they are more of just filling gaps (large size).
