Troy Smith.......Demands Trade Now?

    It took him until 2 weeks ago to throw his first career INT. He hasn't played much, but going 80+ passes before throwing a single interception is still pretty impressive.

    I'm not sure he's a starter, but there are several teams where he would at least be able to compete for a starting job. Flacco is obviously the guy in Baltimore.

    For the people saying he isn't a starter so he should stay put, what is the downside for him? If he goes to , say, Carolina and doesn't win the starting job it isn't like they would straight up cut him. He would still be a backup QB, getting paid and all the same stuff he is now.

    b/c u have a sure thing right now. U don't know how another team will assess your value. He very well could screw the pooch by wanting out.

    Smith could find a team that he could start for if he tries out but I think any team he goes to he can/will be the backup worst case scenario.

    How many games has he played in? Like 4? No one knows how good or bad he is. I know he is better than Anderson, because Eric Mangini is better than Anderson. He may or may not be better than Quinn, but the free agent market isn't flooded with good QBs this year, so if they can get him then why not do it?

    If his agent's not careful they'll talk him out of a playoff share. The Ravens could just cut him.

    That said, he's not a better NFL QB than Brady Quinn. Take off the scarlet and gray glasses. He didn't throw a pick in his first 80 throws. Brady went more than 100 on that dumpster fire without throwing one.

    One of my coworkers read somewhere that someone on a different board said Smith could start for 16 teams in the league, including Houston, Green Bay and NEW ORLEANS.

    I can think of 20 automatic no's off the top of my head (Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Houston, Tennessee, San Diego, Denver, Kansas City, New England, Miami, Dallas, Giants, Philadelphia, Washington, New Orleans, Atlanta, Arizona, Seattle, St. Louis, Minnesota, Green Bay, Chicago, Detroit.)

    I also don't think he'd beat out Brady or Mark Sanchez. David Garrard is safe I think in Jacksonville.

    So that leaves the Raiders, Carolina, Tampa Bay and Buffalo and the Niners. (forgive me if I forgot someone.)

    Carolina is going to give Matt Moore a chance. Alex Smith will get one last shot in Frisco. Tampa just drafted its guy. That leaves Buffalo and the Raiders. He doesn't have the downfield cannon to sign and start in Oakland. So that leaves Buffalo, IMO. They'll probably go draft a QB of the future, as will the Rams at some point.

    He may get into a camp where someone gives him a chance to beat out an underwhelming starter. Doesn't mean he'll win the job. He won't go anywhere and be anointed the starter.

    Look at it this way. Ozzie is as good as they come. With Troy on the roster, he traded up to draft a quarterback. That, to me, speaks a ton to the reality of the situation.

    I wouldn't say Washington, St. Louis, and Detroit are automatic no's.

    Washington is a definite because I don't think Campbell is that good.

    Stafford has shown some glimpses of being good. However I listed them as a definite no, because Detroit is going to play him at QB and Troy has no chance to play there.

    I still can't pass judgement on Jason Campbell. Man has had at least 5 OC's in his 5 year career. Can't get much established when you're changing coaches every single year.

    The wonderful thing about Ohio football fans is we have this discussion. No other fan base in America is discussing Troy Smith as an NFL starter.

    Troy Smith was listed as the starter prior to his illness correct? Flacco succeeds because Baltimore has a damn good offensive line and we already know about their defense. Smith would have done the same thing.

    If we bring Smith in, it would be an upgrade at the QB spot. Better arm and mobility than Quinn, and I would say more accurate too. But I doubt he puts up good numbers because that offense is abysmal as it is. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, or Drew Brees wouldn't make the browns a 10-6 team. The O-line is awful outside of Thomas. The WR's are average at best. And do we really know how good the D is? They look great and then awful.

    I want Troy Smith as the QB. I think he could turn out like Drew Brees with the right system and offensive coordinator. Brees isn't THAT accurate (watch him play, his receivers make some outstanding plays for him) and he has a very feared running game. It would take a year or two for them to get clicking with the new offense, but I think it could become a feared one.

    You're misunderstanding what your coworker read completely. The person on the other board wasn't saying Smith would start over Schaub, Brees, or Rogers, but that the offensive scheme those teams won, combined with the weapons they have would be a scenario in which Smith would be able to succeed. All of these teams can go 4-5 receivers deep, and each one of them has the ability to score on any given play, Troy's got the mobility and the arm strength to succeed in those types of offenses. I think he could be a good WCO QB once he finds that role.

    You guys are basing your opinions off Troy Smith as a college player.

    If he was a good pro, Ozzie would never have gone after Flacco.

    Right now, there's no proof he's not another Jason White.

    Well I'm not sure who you've watched but I've seen all three play, in the NFL, and have determined that he is better than both of them. He has a better arm than Quinn (not to mention more mobile), he is more accurate than Anderson (also more mobile). Hell, he's NEVER thrown an interception in the NFL.

    Personally I think you're ignorant if you think Quinn or Anderson is better...and I'm a Browns fan.

    You act like he's been starting, or playing a lot in 3 years. The guy hasn't even taken 100 snaps in the NFL yet.
