Holmgren's conference call

    He didn't come out and say Mangini was safe, but he did say he's not a fan of the one and done. The article doesn't mention it , but he also said he likes his offense. He said something like If the coach doesn't want to run his offense, he better be able to convince him his is better. Sounds like the WCO is headed our way.

    I can live with Mangini potentially for another year as long as Holmgren fires Daboll and strips Mangini of any and all power he might have in influencing talent evaluation and future drafts/trades/Free agency. Bringing in talented players is more important than bringing in Johnny workhorse "Mangini guys" who are marginal NFL talents.

    As long as all he is doing is coaching X's and O's with the talent provided for him he can't do much damage if he is given another year outside of maybe a poor record.

    I wouldn't say Mangini should have NO influence but I would say he shouldn't have the power or final word on any personell. He's clearly been all about making his life easier with his little lap dogs.

    Holmgren made it clear he will have the final say so over, not only personel, but all aspects of the organization.

    Mangini has made a couple of finds this year. I think he found a hidden gem with that Matt Roth guy..

    He didn't say that Mangini's job was safe, but I got the sense from Holmgren that he liked Mangini, and that they should be able to work together. I think Holmgren will try to work with Mangini and would like to keep him, but if it becomes obvious that they can't work together, then he will get rid of him.

    Also, Mangini said in his post game conference that he would have no problem running the WCO. He said he ran a form of it when he was with the Jets when Favre was QB. So I got the sense that we'll be bringing in a OC that will run a WCO, but Mangini will retain his job.

    Another thing I found interesting about the conference call was that Holmgren's deal was 5 years. I imagined it would have been longer, closer to 10 years, from the reports that I had read. I would have liked to see a longer deal, so we would know that the MAN at the top will be steady, and constant, something this organization has lacked since '99.

    I like the 5 year deal. That should be enough time for Holmgren to do his job. If he gets the right guys in place and the Browns on the right track, then he basically becomes expendable at that point.

    He becomes expendable if he does a good job? That doesn't make sense. If he gets the right guys in place, and turns us around, we should hold on to him as long as possible.

    Well, Brady Quinn should be our starting QB if we turn to the West-Coast Offense. Maybe he will be able to excel as well with shorter dump off passes:D

    Quinn doesn't have any strength's.
    He will not be the starting QB under Holmgren and you can take that to the bank.....

    OK, so who will be? I don't agree with you but i'm curious who you think will be our starting QB...

    Matt Roth will be a very good player for Cleveland imo. He was very talented coming out of Iowa and I was very happy when Cleveland picked him up.

    The only reason Holmgren came to Cleveland was because he is going to have the power over anything and everything he wants. He loves to rebuild and he sees Cleveland as his crowning moment if he can get this franchise back to winning.

    Quinn has to be the starting QB unless a veteran QB signs via FA and takes over the spot. Cleveland cannot afford to draft another high QB if thats what the poster is implying. If Cleveland does move to the WCO, could you imagine Anderson trying to throw a 5 yard pass jesus.

    He may not be, but if he isnt, they are getting a FA. Lord I do NOT want to see what DA has to offer in a WCO. That would be disastrous. Of the two we have, Quinn will be better in a WC style offense. May not be our starter, but if he isnt, we have to sign a FA.

    Amen. DA can not throw a short route if his life depened upon it.

    If you want an example of how "well" DA throws short passes, look no further than the attempted screen pass last Sunday. It was set up with blockers so well that had he been able to get the ball 10 yards with touch, it might have been a touchdown. Instead, he fired it high and wide at about 90 miles per hour.

    Pathetic.

    DA's contract is not friendly. He will be owed something like a $7 million roster bonus in March if he's kept. So you can kiss him goodbye now.

    ^^^Of that group, give me Orton or Smith (and I am not an OSU fan at all).

    However, Im not sure either is worth signing to a long deal for any kind of cash. Quinn isnt much worse than what they have to offer. Orton has progressed nicely over the years, but I think he may have reached his ceiling and could start to fall sooner rather than later.

    Not much to choose from. Orton or Redman could be serviceable. I don't think Baltimore will let Smith get away.

    Oh no he lost a Super Bowl? I wonder if Bill B. is over losing his last SB, does that automatically negate his other accomplishments just like Holmgren?

    He has taken two different franchises to the SB, winning one of them.
