Must've been last night because I just saw late this AM. I tweeted John Fay about it but he hasn't replied. -
Midstate01Ok I see it on the transactions site now. Weird that no writers have mentioned it at all. Fans have and have asked the writers, but no responses. Weird

thavoiceOnly thing I can think of is maybe cueto is going to make a start within the next 5 games, and they will bring up someone until then, and then bring cingrani back to pitch in the DH and figured since they couldn't use him fo a bit make this move? BUt to the Arz fall league?
-
Azubuike24The only thing I can think of is they are not going to need him until Tuesday...but still, wouldn't you want to add a hitter or extra arm just in case? Also, they are going to need to bring up a 6th starter for Tuesday (Cingrani would probably start one of the games), so you would actually need to demote a player to make room.
My only other guess is they bring up a hitter for Friday-Monday, demote that player for an alternate starter in game 1, then demote that starter game for Cingrani in game 2. -
Azubuike24I can't see it being Cueto. They made a statement just 3 weeks ago that they wouldn't be rushing his return.
Only other solution is that they can "stash" him with the AZL team, and not have to make a move at Louisville or any other level that has roster limits.
However, there has to be a subsequent 25-man move (Lutz from AA, a player/pitcher from AAA or a trade). You don't just play with 24 players for 4 games...I'm sure we will see something soon. -

Well they don't play until tomorrow so I doubt think they have to announce anything at this moment.Azubuike24;1474736 wrote:The only thing I can think of is they are not going to need him until Tuesday...but still, wouldn't you want to add a hitter or extra arm just in case? thavoiceI believe there is a rule that states when you get sent down you cannot be brought back up for 10 days unless someone gets hurt and placed on the DL. So maybe that is why they did it last night apparently? That rule was put into place so teams cannot "Send down" lets say a starter or used up reliever for just a couple of days until he can go again.

se-alumIf he's gonna pitch in SF, might as well have him close by in Arizona. That way, in case there was an injury before he was going to start, he'll be right there for an emergency start.
-
Azubuike24Well, they can retroactively move him down since his last start (7/13) and not being him back up until 7/22. They would save 9 days of prorating an MLB salary vs the minor league standard for a guy with less than a year of service time.
Chump change for an MLB team, but that's (9 X 465 K or whatever it is) - (9 X 32 K or whatever it is).
EDIT: thavoice, good point. Maybe that is why AZL and not to AAA? Maybe some loophole in where a guy can go without counting toward those limitations. -
thavoice
Eh. If it is the case that he will come back and pitch in that SF game then I doubt he never even goes anywhere and stays with the reds, just not on the roster. PLus, the AZ fall league isn't going on right now. I just never heard of a player getting sent to their fall league affiliate like this.se-alum;1474746 wrote:If he's gonna pitch in SF, might as well have him close by in Arizona. Are you sure they can do that retro? I know it can be done when a player is going on the DL but not sure if you can do it in the instance you are referring to.Azubuike24;1474747 wrote:Well, they can retroactively move him down since his last start (7/13) and not being him back up until 7/22. thavoiceReally doesn't make sense when I look at the schedule. Thought maybe they had a day off before going out west but they don't and the DH is before the 10 days. You may be right about either a loophole in the 10 day in sending out there or that they can retro it.
-
se-alumI agree that moving Cingrani at all is very strange, really no reason for it, other than they know he won't pitch for awhile, so they may want another bat. There are also special double-header rules they will be able to take advantage of.
-
Azubuike24Yeah, exactly, there is no AFL except extended spring training. It has to be some sort of loophole to avoid roster limits, service time or salary.
-
thavoiceHe most def will have to pitch on the 23rd in that DH even if cueto is back you would think.
-
thavoice
Doubting it is the service time and salary issue. That was the Marge Schott days when the would penny pinch. It does work out for the 10 days from the 13th as you stated the last time he threw. Is he possibly hurt a little bit? His pitch count was up, but not terrible, in his last outing that he went only 4 innings. I thought maybe since it was right before the break they got him out early to get relievers some work but maybe not. Maybe this is buying the team a little time. Who fn knows.Azubuike24;1474762 wrote:Yeah, exactly, there is no AFL except extended spring training. It has to be some sort of loophole to avoid roster limits, service time or salary. -
se-alumI tweeted Doug Gray, and this was his replies.
Doug Gray ‏@dougdirt24 1m @jer0702 He was optioned to the AZL Reds, not the AZL Fall League. And it looks like a paper move. He isn't actually going there.
Doug Gray ‏@dougdirt24 2m
@jer0702 Why they made the paper move though, I honestly have no clue. -
thavoiceYeah, sounds just like manipulating the roster. Probably to get a bat off the bench for the Pittsburgh series since the BP will be rested. This series is going to be a big, big one. 2 of 3 I crucial, 3 of 3 of course is ideal. Pirates have very strong pitching.
-
Midstate01@ctrent in a piece of roster gymnastics, Congrani optioned to AZL, Neftali Soto is here for next stretch. Cingrani will still start one if DH games
-
se-alumKinda surprised they're allowed to do something like this, though I don't think they could if it weren't for the double-header.
-
Heretic
I just know that at the least, Game 1 is a marquee match-up with Liriano vs. Leake. Two guys no one expected to be aces, but who have pitched like that so far this year.thavoice;1474774 wrote:Yeah, sounds just like manipulating the roster.
