  Tiger wanted the replayed shot to come down 4 yds shorter on the green than where the original one did. If he thought the rule that applied was that he could take it as far back as he wanted, why wouldn't he take it back 4 yds and hit the same shot.   I already said this earlier in the thread, but I believe he said he wanted to land it 2 yards shorter, which is why he dropped it 2 yards behind his original spot. In his mind, he thought he was simply allowed to hit from the same line, and didn't have to go to the same exact spot. It was his mistake. If the guy had the foresight to scheme this up right after he was completely enraged, I'm pretty sure he would have enough composure to continue to "cover up" his scheme in his post-round interview.
  
  It was covered a million times today. He made a mistake. He misinterpreted the rule, he admitted that his drop was illegal once he realized it, and he was punished accordingly. It blows my mind that people think Tiger would just openly cheat right in front of millions of people and chance losing shots because of it. Why would he intentionally chance losing 2 strokes for 2 yards of distance? It doesn't make sense.
  
  I hope he wins the damn thing tomorrow just to piss everyone off even more.

  This is the last time I'm posting about this. I think this explains it pretty well. After hitting off the flagstick and into the water, Woods had three choices...
  
  1. Play from the drop zone
  2. Play from a straight line from where the ball went into the water
  3. Play from the exact same spot
  
  I think it's easily conceivable that since the ball ricocheted off at an angle before going into the water, that in the heat of the moment, Tiger simply screwed up. He played from a straight line from where he hit the ball, but the ricochet made that an incorrect position. He bascially combined two of the options because he was pissed beyond belief about what had just happened and unintentionally cost himself two shots.

  No, he wanted to take 4 yds off the shot! Two with the cheating placement, and two by hitting the shot two yards shorter in total flight. That is what I clearly understood from hearing him say it. Here is what is reported to be the transcript of his interview after his round:
  
  After the round, Woods said: "I went back to where I played it from, but I went 2 yards further back and I took, tried to take two yards off the shot of what I felt I hit.'' (hit being past tense)
  
  So to me it is clear he wanted to land 4 yds shorter on the green, and his cheating plan was to try to get 2 by cheating and 2 by hitting it less hard. Clearly intentional, and maybe if the review committee would have more thoughtfully considered their ruling before he finished the round,they may have come to a different conclusion. Speaking of a big factor in a person's mind when he is considering cheating, would be previous history, and we know his personal integrity with his former wife is not very admirable!

  No, I don't think it means that at all. You're interpreting his comment one way, and I'm interpreting it another. If you can explain to me why he would risk losing two strokes for two yards (or four yards, in your opinion) of distance, then maybe I'll change my viewpoint. It just doesn't make sense to risk that for basically no change.
  
  The end result is that he was penalized. If he was cheating or if he simply made a dumb mistake, HE STILL GOT PENALIZED. If the officials would've done their job before he signed his card, he would've lost the two strokes right then instead of the next morning.

  Do you not comprehend that blatantly cheating is the dumbest thing in the world. Why would he intentionally risk a 2 stroke penalty? Anyone who thinks he cheated on purpose is a full on retard, sorry. No way a guy goes out there in front of thousands (millions if you count TV) and openly and obviously breaks a rule like that. The risk is so great. He thought what he was doing was legal.
  
  Its more likely he didnt want to go 4 yards back because the ground might have been a different lie and he was obviously the lie and shot he had just hit.

  I'm saying that in his mind he thought the 4 yards was blatant, and the 2 yards he could probably get away with, which is proven that he would have by the committee's original ruling. But then he opened his mouth and his plot was exposed and was foiled!

  So you think the risk of a 2 stroke penalty in The Masters was put up against a drop 2 yards closer to the pin on a scale of risk/reward and came out on top in Tigers mind?

  So I would say that two reasonable people can hear the same statement and reasonably interpret it differently. But I don't think that the one that reasonably thinks it exposes a thought process of cheating is a "full on retard"!

  I'm not Tiger Woods and neither are you, so neither of us can say for sure exactly what he was thinking. I'm also not an expert on how Tiger makes his decisions on distance control, so I don't know if he was trying to compensate for the distance through the drop and by dialing back his swing, or just through the drop. Either way, we can agree to disagree. The end result is that it cost him two shots because he made a dumb mistake, or because he got caught trying to cut corners. You're entitled to your opinion, just as I'm entitled to mine.
  
  I do think that if he was truly lying, he would've tried to wiggle his way out of what he said in the interview when the rules committee talked to him this morning. He said to them exactly what he said to Rinaldi in his post-round interview. If you were cheating and trying to cover it up, why would you tell on yourself twice, especially the second time when you know it's about to cost you two strokes?

  Here's to hoping Tiger struggles tomorrow and is nowhere in the top 20! I think the "Tiger = ratings and is the only reason people watch golf" argument is hilarious. It survived before him and it will survive without him(like it has the past few years).

  This. I know it was a big story, but damn, the dude had what may have been a great shot go in the water and had a 2 stroke penalty added. Hitting the flagstick at least has cost him 3 strokes and maybe 4. People need to let it go that he is some evil person or a cheater because of this(looking at golf only obvi) and just get back to the best tournament of the year.

  I think he was already on record in his statement right after theround, and had been "had" by then and tried to cut his losses, rather than trying to further tangle the web that we weave when we practice to deceive! I hope they were sharp enough to question his intent of his statement -- did he really mean that he was trying to land it 2 yds or 4 yds shorter? If so, that is where he might have started to wiggle.
