Pittsburgh Pirates 2013 thread -- Onward Sweet Futility, AWAY!!!!
-
HereticClinch the series with St. Louis so that no matter what happens today, they're no worse than tied for first AND add another decent bat who has been hot recently?
Pretty good couple days in Pirate-land! -
RotinajSeeing this thread really hurts my feelz. The Pirates aren't supposed to be better than the Reds....Please stop bumping it.

Ironman92Kudos to the Pirates for going for it....nothing in the future is guaranteed.
I like the Young and Byrd pickups -

Agreed. It's about time. -
Heretic
Agreed. Except for the part about Young, since it was the Dodgers who got him. Pirates got Morneau.Ironman92;1494206 wrote:Kudos to the Pirates for going for it....nothing in the future is guaranteed.

End of Line3 game series with the Brewers staring this afternoon.
-
HereticBack in first thanks to a win over the Brewers combined with Cincinnati beating the Cards.
And finally, I have a reason to celebrate Labor Day! -

HereticGoal 1 accomplished.
Goal 2 (winning season) can be done tonight.
Then comes Goal 3 (making the playoffs), which won't take long if they play reasonably well, since after Cincinnati, the NL falls into the shitter pretty quick.
More goals to follow. Winning the division would be a nice one to avoid the one-game playoff wild card round. Let others deal with that shit... -
End of Line

HereticGoal 2 didn't happen last night. Liriano got hit around and the team left about 34875 runners on base. Scored 3 runs; could have easily put 8-9 on the board, but just couldn't get big hits with RISP and had a big baserunning blunder in the seventh.

killer_ewok#82 in the books! YES. Great outing by Cole.
-
Laley23Sweep the Ranges, please.
-
Ironman92That was a huge win for Pittsburgh
-
Heretic82 to end the streak!
Now need to keep winning. Finish this series strong and have a good homestand to clinch the playoffs and then keep going from there to see how far they can go. -
HereticGreat (if depressing until you get towards the end) recap of the 20-year drought -- 100 moments of the streak. http://www.piratesprospects.com/2013/09/the-fall-and-rise-of-the-pittsburgh-pirates-100-moments-from-the-streak.html
I never knew that Littlefield made the decision the team would not try to draft Kershaw in the '06 draft despite his scouts urging/begging him to, solely on the basis of watching him pitch poorly in one cold-weather high school game. I was at a loss for words after reading that...and I'm very damn used to stories about that guy's ineptitude. -
HereticNice. Go from a four-game losing streak to winning two straight at Texas. Be nice to get the sweep heading into the final home stand. At 11 games long, going 8-3 or so there would be nice to really cement the team as, at worst, being the home team for the wild card game and hopefully in front of the Cards to avoid that shit.
-
HereticUp 4-2 through 6 in the series finale against Texas.
Burnett was dominant through five innings, but struggled in the sixth (two walks, two singles) before getting a double play and flyout to end the inning. -
HereticTook a 6-2 lead in the top of the seventh, but the bottom of the inning has been full of fail. 6-5 now with two outs and runners on the corner. Neither Burnett nor Jeanmar have been all that competent in this inning.
-
HereticHmmm, bringing in Bryan Morris into the game in a high-leverage situation. Not what I'd do...but yeah. We'll see what this leads to.
EDIT: HOLY SHIT HE GOT AN OUT!!!!
Still, team better be ready to keep scoring. Texas has woken up on offense, so I don't know that a one-run lead will hold up for two full innings. -
HereticSweep completed! Great rebound from the weekend debacle in St. Louis.
Now, time to cheer for the Brewers to show a pulse against the Cards. A lot easier to cheer for Milwaukee when they don't have Braun playing for them.
