Neither can I. In hilarious "small world, ain't it" shit, Cole starts his career against San Fran. Cole's girlfriend is the sister of SF shortstop Brandon Crawford.

Leading to the potential for an awkward family gathering, depending on what happens tonight!

Solid 1st inning for Cole. My goodness he is throwing some heaters.
  • killer_ewok
2nd inning was a little shaky but he got himself out of a jam with no damage done by SF.
  • killer_ewok
And Gerrit Cole drives in 2 runs! LOL Awesome.

    What a debut for Cole.

Very strong debut and a win in his first start. Good way to start out a major league career.

Pirates are in 3rd in the NL Central, but have the 4th best record in baseball.

They'd be first in every division but the AL East.

The NL Central is crazy good

It is awesome. And frustrating because they've been in third most of the year despite having a real good record. But I remember how a few years back, the division sucked ass and it was more of a "anyone finishes over .500, they got it in the bag" kind of thing. Now, it's more like, "Hope you have the goods to be the best team in baseball, or you're finishing second, at best."

Charlie Morton makes his season debut tonight, as they go for the sweep of SF.

While Cole's career debut was met with a ton of anticipation, the word for this day might be "trepidation", as inconsistent as he can be with things like control.

Buccos split a 4-game series in Cincinnati following a 5-3 win today. Not the most exciting games but the pitching was pretty outstanding both ways. Pedro had quite a game today at the plate.

Buccos remain a 1/2 game back of Cincy just as they were before this series. I'll settle for that at this point.

Pirates are 6-4 vs. the Reds this season.

Nice win today, as they needed to salvage a split after blowing the game last night. Would have rather gotten 3/4, but a win's a win and they at least didn't lose any ground on the Reds...even if they likely aren't gaining any on St. Louis, which would have been nice.

Are there really words to express the annoyance one feels when they look at the MLB standings and realize that while the Pirates have the third-best record in all of baseball, they also only have the third-best record in their division?

And all three good teams there have been 6-4 over their last 10 games, so it's just been this really long stretch of everything staying the same no matter what happens on any given night.

Tis a long season my friend. I wouldn't worry about the standings right meow.

Very true. But it's the summer, so there's not much else to occupy my time, sportswise, so obsessing over the standings when it's too early to mean anything is how I cope.

In a rare occurrence, the Cardinals and Reds both lost last night and the Pirates downed the Angels which puts the Buccos a 1/2 game ahead of Cincy and within 3 of St. Louis.

Gerrit Cole with another solid outing moved to 3-0 to start his career and Grilli nailed down the win with his 26th save of the year.
  • End of Line
Cole throwing the heat last night. El Toro with his 17th HR of the season as well.

Pedro heating up is a great thing for the team, since he's easily the most explosive offensive weapon. A blog I read kinda summed it up after the last game in the Reds series. Said that the fact the Pirates struck out 12 times in the game didn't really mean anything. What's important is whether, of those 12 Ks, if Pedro has 4 of them or 1 of them...because if he makes contact three times, odds are something good will be happening.

As for Cole, while none of his opponents are performing near their career bests, it's still pretty damn cool to have three starts and be 3-0 against Lincicum, Greinke and Weaver.

Pirates beat the Angels 6-1 and the Cards and Reds both fell again. Buccos move to 2 games back of St. Louis and a game and a half ahead of Cincy. Liriano with a solid outing and Cutch and Pedro both hit HR's.

Nice column about them (in particular, the pitchers) on Yahoo.

Raise it. Pirates win 10-9 in 10 innings to sweep the Angels.

What a rally by the Buccos in the 9th and then a big 10th inning. Grilli had me worried there at the end. Would be nice if St. Louis lost tonight.

Fucking crazy game today. Was 6-3 Angels entering the 9th and the Pirates scored three to tie it and then added four more in the top of the 10th. And Grilli then had a nightmare inning, giving up three runs and having runners on second and third with two outs and Trout up for the win before finally getting out of the inning and winning the game (no save, though, as it was a 4-run lead entering it).

Series sweep on the road always is good. Especially when it comes against an attention-getting eleventy-billion-payroll group of underachieving bitches.

Time to cheer for Texas, now. Hopes not overly high tonight, as it's Wainwright going against some 3-6 guy I've never heard of, but anything can happen!

Exhilarating and scary as hell all at once. Could be a special summer in Pittsburgh.
  • End of Line
Grilli nearly had me pulling my hair out. Happy with the W and the sweep! Raise It!

I hope it's said at least 35 or 36 more times this season.
