Royals at the Tribe

  • BR1986FB
What the Hell...I'll give this a shot. Tribe needs to bounce back. 4:05pm start today with Adcock taking the hill for the Royals and Tomlin for the Tribe.

    Take this article FWIW...

Very rational explanation of the situation in Cleveland. It's not how much they spend or don't spend.

"...To pretend that the Dolans are the root of the problem, or that Dick Jacobs would outspend his revenue if he still owned the team (he never did outspend it, by the way), that's when you lose me. ..."

Wealthy people don't stay wealthy by spending more than they take in over long periods of time.

"...Let's just not pretend they're the only reason why baseball in this town isn't what it was in the 1990s. ..."

^^^ehhh, to a point. The Indians were one of the most profitable organizations in baseball last year. They could come up with a few more bucks to add punch to the lineup. But if the total premise of the article is that it is more than just the Dolan's that attendance is low...I don't think you can argue against that. The Sabathia and Lee trades ripped the hearts out of fans, and they are notorious for coming in second place in bidding for even free agents of even moderate stature. I think a lot of fans say to themselves, "If they won't spend, why should we?"
Despite the fact the team is winning, there seems to be a credibility gap, and that's on the Dolan's. Hpoefully the team can continue to win...and the fans will come back.

Matt Laporta has been has been spending about half his playing time in Columbus playing left field. If the offensive production from that position doesn't take a turn soon, it wouldn't surpise me to see him called up. Reportedly, the team is happy with the way he has changed his approach at the plate.

How many times have we played the Royals this year already? Seems like we have a series with them every other week. Should be a good way to get the swagger back though after a rough weekend in Chi-town.

With the lineup we have....can't take anything for granted

Yeah, they do play us tough, and they just took a series from The O's in Baltimore.

Plus, you throw in the injuries and the way we played against the White Sux.....

This....yesterday's lineup was the worst I've seen in quite a while.

I can't believe I am even asking this, but does anyone have any idea when/if Sizemore is going to be ready?

I am getting this sinking feeling that we may be seeing a replay of last year in the sense that we just don't have enough hitting, and the pitching has no margin for error. We got off to another hot start, but it is just really hard to sustain when you have so many holes in the line-up. It catches up with you over time.

Cabrera is the only regular hitting over .275 right now, and the bottom of the line-up usually is practically non-existent for the most part.

Last year we were 30-15 after 45 games. This year it was 26-19. The division is God awful so that helps, but this team needs some more pieces I think to get to the finish line.

Who cares? Think the lineup can be bad now? Insert Strikemore and any "progress" will go into a tailspin. Dumbass Acta will probably a) insert him as an every day player, like he hasn't missed a beat and b) worse yet, plug him back in as the leadoff hitter.
  • dazedconfused
given the current state of our lineup, kind of surprised chiz wasn't immediately inserted into four or five hole after being called up today (he'll dh and hit 7th today).
  • grodt
Not sure if it was mentioned elsewhere, but as dazed said, Chiz is up with Hannahan going to the DL. Also, Asencio was DFA'd to make room for Tomlin coming off the DL. Apparently Hannahan overcompensated when he came back from the back injury and hurt his calf, hence the trip to the DL.

And BR, right now there is no way anyone but Choo is batting lead off. As for him playing every day, well I'd rather have him out there over Johnny Damon.

The Indians had a top 10 payroll in 1995, and top 5 in 1997 (only $5M short of the Yankees). They hit $92M in 2001, and then it was halved by 2003. The team was still good and bringing in gate revenue at this point.
Paryoll is 20th this year, and was 25th last year (and most of the ones before that).
The team spent $5M more in 1997 than they did in 2011, which is pathetic considering 15 years of inflation alone should have driven it upwards beyond that, even with spending cuts.

There's no revenue because Dolan chose not to spend when there was revenue and killed it. However, it was cute that he asked a PD writer to try to drum up some good publicity for him

CHISENHALL! Hell yes, he's my favorite current Indian. I worked a summer for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers the year he was our 1st round pick and would literally stop working during a Chisenhall at bat. He had such a smooth and sweet stroke that I said after the 1st time I saw him bat he was guaranteed to make the big leagues.

Adjusted for inflation a $92 million dollar payroll in 2001 would be like spending about $119.5 million today.

The Cardinals are at $110 million, Brewers at $97 million, and Twins at $94 million are the kind of payrolls Cleveland should realistically be looking at. Those are all markets around the same size as ours. The Reds in future years will be in that same range now that they extended Votto/Phillips.

The $15-20 difference between those and the $78 million the Tribe are at is an extra couple (or one really good) power bats that might change the way we play ball as far as being a big small ball team.

The Dolans would prefer to put it in their pocket though, so we will continue to spin our wheels while other teams in like situations pass us by.

FYI: The artist formerly known as Leo Nunez was suspended 8 weeks by MLB today for "engaging in age and identity fraud".

So, once the artist formerly known as Fausto makes it back to the US, you can expect the same

I think Fausto is done as an Indian. The nice thing is that I am sure that all this stuff voids his contract and the Dolan's are probably entitled to recoup some money from him.....I am sure they will invest it well.

Probably in some new pants with deeper pockets to handle the windfall. The ones they have are overflowing as it is, they are going to need some more room if they start getting money back like that.

    Chiz!

    Chiz!!!!!
  • IggyPride00
I hope that shows Antonetti that he is wasting Chis down in AAA.

We have enough AAAA players on this roster that we can find room for a young guy that actually has some upside. That he was rotting away in AAA with an offense this weak is an embarrassment anyway. At least he has potential, which is more than most of this roster can say.

    that a boy kip
  • ts1227
Kipnis was out in that little rundown, but we'll take it.
  • Laley23
Kipnis is awesome. Horrible baserunning followed it up, but he is awesome.

Kipnis is now 15th in the AL in RBI, with 30. Thats very good in general, but considering Acta had him at 7th for the first weeks of the season, its even better.
