Phillips has to be hurting to not be in there after the day he had at the plate yesterday. -
thavoiceIn between the last two games in SL Mr Baker said that BP would probably sit some in Chicago because of the forecast of colder weather which would be bad for his hammy
The reds over the last few years have been feast or famine in the runs dept. They are dependant on the long ball. Yesterday it showed up, and lets hope it sticks around.
Late last season I had alot of extra time at work so I looked at the reds and cards scoring. The reds score fewer than 3 runs far MORE than the cards did even tho cincy was near the top in runs scored. I forget the actual avg runs/game for Cincy and SL last year, but the truth was in the consistancy that SL had. You average runs/game doesnt tell the full story, especially if you score big, and then barely anything at all.
Bailey may be the fortunate one right now taht Bray is struggling. If BB was pitching like normal then it makes Chapman more likely to take over for HB if he falters. Harder to move Chappy into the rotation if Bray continues to struggle -

I really don't think the way Bray is pitching has anything to do with it. Bailey is going to get every opportunity to succeed, because he's out of options, and it's been well documented that it takes him way too long to get loose, so he's not a viable bullpen option. If Chapman takes Bailey's place, he's no longer a Red.thavoice;1148774 wrote:In between the last two games in SL Mr Baker said that BP would probably sit some in Chicago because of the forecast of colder weather which would be bad for his hammy

Plus its really cold in Chicago. Not good for the hammy -
SportsAndLadyIts really not that cold...its been 60s and 70s all week and today has dropped into the 40s and 50s

Rotinaj
I'd rather have him sit some earlier so it gets fully healed. Hammys can be a bitch.SportsAndLady;1148867 wrote:Its really not that cold...its been 60s and 70s all week and today has dropped into the 40s and 50s -

..or should I have stated that because Bray has struggled will be the justification from Mr Baker on the topic of chapman staying in the pen?se-alum;1148816 wrote:I really don't think the way Bray is pitching has anything to do with it. HB will be given every opportunity to succeed. I agree with that totally. Chapman still has only 8 IP so far. He has way too much talent to not be in the rotation and having 20 IP in so far.
BB struggling will give DB reason to keep AP in the pen -

Yeah...I guess teh forcast weather in chicago was to be cooler. Just stating what Mr Baker said the other daySportsAndLady;1148867 wrote:Its really not that cold...its been 60s and 70s all week and today has dropped into the 40s and 50s -
sportsfan24I for one think that Chapman should be the closer for this team. Throwing 98MPH coming out of the pen in the 9th is a hard task for any team to try and hit.

throwing 95-100 for 6-9 innings every 5 days would be a hard task for ANY team to try and hit!sportsfan24;1148890 wrote:I for one think that Chapman should be the closer for this team. Throwing 98MPH coming out of the pen in the 9th is a hard task for any team to try and hit.
I am always for a guy to start instead of closing if that is all possible.
I think a stud in the rotation is more important. I will take 30+ starts, 180+ innings over 40 saves and maybe 50-60 innings any day. Any time a stud takes the mound, like a Cueto and I think chapman could be as well, you have to feel good about the team winning that day. A closer.......well, they are important but ya have to get them the lead normally. If a guy has 40 saves then I would say 5-10 were of the 2+ run lead variety when he came in. He may have some big time moments and such, but the starter is much more important. -
Terry_TateStubbs with a big series in Chicago this weekend, book it.

sportsfan24Thavoice,
I agree to a point, I would also take 30+ starts, 180+ innings over 40 saves any day. Nevertheless, right now the rotation is pretty much set. (Even though I am not sold on Homer Bailey) All I’m saying is if you have a stud in the pen why not use him to make sure you get the win? Then maybe next ST bring him along at your number 2 starter. -

Well, until now Chapman was just too wild to be the starter. They want him in the rotation, and I think they are just waiting for that time to come through bad outings or via injury. USUALLY you can count on needing that 6th starter fairly early! PLus, I dont think they wanna put Chapman as the closer and then a starter. They brought in Madson to close and Marshall as the "Closer in waiting" so I imagine they would like to minimize changing roles of alot of guys when something comes up. One could argue taht so far Chapman has been more important in the role that he has been used in than he would have been in a closer's role. A good closer is great to have, but unless you have the pitching to get up to tha point in the game it doesnt really matter.sportsfan24;1148908 wrote:Thavoice,

I thought maybe Arroyo would flop and end up in LR but he has pitched very well. -

Bases loaded for the Reds. Big chance for Heisey to do something. -
Midstate01Anyone else notice every player that slides into 2nd gets up and is rubbing their knees like they hurt it!?

Could be just to get the dirt off.
3 in the first so far... -
HereticTwo errors for the Cubs so far in the first. I remember watching them play last year and thinking they were comically horrible on defense. Good to see they haven't improved on that. Which is part of the reason they're probably 3-10 and the worst team in the Central in the early stages of the year. Even worse than Cincy and Pittsburgh with their .200ish team batting averages (well Cincy's probably improved thanks to yesterday, but still, both have stunk at the plate pretty consistently so far).

mhs95_06How much of Byrd's bad choice to throw to 3B after he bobbled the hit by Heisey was motivated by the fact he bobbled it vs. the hit being in the gap and having the same poor chance to get the runner at 3rd. In other words did the thought of it being an error on him if he didn't throw the runner out at 3rd cause him to make the bad choice that he wouldn't have made if he thought it would have just been scored going 1st to 3rd on the hit?

Marshall is just as tough to hit. The problem is their use. Dusty is the only one who hasn't realized that Chapman + Marshall as many times as possible is the best plan. The Reds can go a long way if those 2 guys stay healthy.sportsfan24;1148890 wrote:I for one think that Chapman should be the closer for this team. Cubs defense looks bad like Arizona two seasons ago before Kirk Gibson took over!Heretic;1148956 wrote:Two errors for the Cubs so far in the first. mhs95_06In addition to the weather being not good for hammys, it looks like the weather is not good for good defense -- 3 errors in the game so far!

When I saw Stubbs steal 2B, it looked like he was delayed in his start for 3B because of maybe the pain from going into 2nd.Midstate01;1148952 wrote:Anyone else notice every player that slides into 2nd gets up and is rubbing their knees like they hurt it!?
