Would much rather have Chapman affecting 180 innings a year, as opposed to 30-40.

Bailey with a good job in the 1st, pitching around the 1 out error. He used 22 pitches, but 5-7 of them were caused by the error. Reds had Volstad at 41 pitches in the first, but didn't continue the stress on him by letting him get away with just 7 pitches in the 2nd.

Could be just to get the dirt off.

3 in the first so far...

Well Stubbs got to third and was like stretching it out and rubbing it like it hurt. Then Bruce did the same. It was just weird.

Ya gotta remember that Volstad is a professional pitcher too. He has 48 through 2 IP...still pretty darned high. If he throws them in there the reds are gonna take a whack.

SOunded like HB did a good job in getting out of the jam. He has good stuff, and always seems to have "just that one bad inning" that totall derails him. The diff between a good pitcher and a bad one is damage control. The good ones continue to battle in those tough innings and minimizes the damage. The bad ones let it snowball. So far in his career HB is a snowball pitcher, and until he gets out of that then he will never be any better than he is now.

Did Bruce do a face plant instead of a slide back into 1st that contributed to him being doubled off on the rolen line drive? The soil doesn't seem conducive for good sliding.

It's kind of funny you guys are going against Paul Maholm tomorrow. Because when he was with Pittsburgh, he was the exact same. You'd get this 6ip, 6runs line and look to see that he pitched four shutout innings, gave up four in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Those guys are the most frustrating to have on your team because you constantly are hoping he'll put it together AND when he has 2-3 straight quality starts, you think he is getting it together. And then...they always revert to form and get blasted.

Right! He didn't let that error snowball too much - gave up a hit on the next pitch, but that was it!

Three errors to two errors now, but the two errors have cost 2 runs while the three errors have cost only one run.

Ya see Cueto the last two seasons take a walk well behind the mound and almost take a mini timeout during those tough innings. Its almost like he regroups himself.
When I was coaching HS kids we stressed to the catcher, and pitcher and to the leaders in the INF to recognize trouble times and call time and go chat with the pitcher. SOmething to break up the momentum. As a coach ya can do it, but ya only get so many visits to the mound and ya really dont wanna have to go out there at every time the pitcher gets under durress (sp) as they need to be able to battle through it.

If HB can start controlling the damage in those innings then he will be the guy that everyone had expected and hoped.

Terrible call on the 3rd strike to Willie Harris!
  • se-alum
How about we get rid of Harris and bring up Rhinehart or Phipps.
  • se-alum
Also, Meso needs moved up. Having him hitting below Harris is mind blowing.

    Good call, so far.

Reds hitters, like almost all hitters, do so much better when they take pitches on the outer third to the opposite field!

Terry Tate magic Stubbs looking good.

Bruce with a good job to not try to get himself positioned to try to throw DeWitt out at 3rd on the fly out for the first out. He did not have much of a chance to get him anyway, and with the weather playing tricks it was correct to put 100% of the focus on just getting the out with a 4 run lead.

    How about Homer!

How about we try to trade Harris for DeWitt on the remote chance the Cubs would go for it!

Good thing on that passed ball that allowed LaHair to go to 3rd that the ump didn't call strike 3 like it was or Soriano would have been on base, too. Another reason for electron balls and strikes -- umps pay more attention to whether you hit the target rather than if it really get it in the strike zone as it is defined!

If the Reds hang on it would be win 10000!!
