I would currently take Votto over Arod, Pujols, and Fielder and their respective current contracts. It was a move the Reds had to make.
Yeah, Magic would've given him $400m based on what his group paid for the Dodgers.

Idk about this. Fielder is 27 and already carded a 50 HR year and bound to have another similar one(won't hit 50 playing in Comerica though), Pujols is well Pujols and A-Rod is the best player of our time. Do you remember what he did in 2007? I think he had 160 RBI's! And as a shortstop too. Just unreal

Arod had 156 RBI in 2007, but he wasn't a SS (Jeter).

With Phillips and Cozart batting in front of Votto this year instead of (mostly) Stubbs and Renteria his RBI numbers are going to go up. If he doesn't have 120+ RBI this season I'll be surprised. He won't be a 40+ HR guy but I can live with that. He'll hit 30+ HR and 35+ 2B just about every year.

    Hope he changes nothing.

This. Without the strikeout king ahead of him...Votto should have a ton more RBIs.

That is why I said, "and their respective contracts". Do you really want to be on the hook for Arod when he is 40+ years old? Same with Pujols? Do you think Fielders body will hold up?

Those guys can move to DH. Votto will be making $20+mil when he is 40 and will have to play the field. It will be a bad contract the last few years, just have to hope he produces in his prime.

Possibly the most I've ever wanted the season to begin.

....and not really because of Reds greatness possibilities....too much good weather and no MLB.

    I need it.

There is no comparison between Prince and Votto.

Votto does so much more for a team than Prince. He's probably the best overall hitter outside of Miguel Cabrera in the MLB. Ability to hit any pitch, any pitcher, any count, to any field. He can draw walks, run the bases and hit for power.

I would've said this was Pujols before last year, but he has to gain the top spot back...

And his defense is head and shoulders above prince.

Yeah didn't even mention that, won a gold glove. Votto was a stiff at first when he first came up. Average at best. Gold Glove in less than 5 years. Dude busts ass...

Well he's only 27 so 36 isn't that old. I mean shoot Tom Brady is almost 36

I think a 40 year old Votto will still be an average first baseman, defensively.

With the Votto deal ya gotta take the good with the bad.

Sure....paying him 22mil + when he is in year 9-10 of his contract wont be a great deal, but hopefully in the ramp up to that he is the cornerstone of the Reds being very competitive. He is one of the top guys in baseball, and still young. He very easily will be a 30/125/.320 guy for a number of years and if ya want that type of player, you gotta pay for it.

I said before taht I dont think any player is worth 20+ million a year, and I still believe it, but man...the reds really need to keep Votto. This sends a serious message to this team, to the fans, to the minors, and to the league that this team is serious about contending. You need to have a stud player, and i would rather pay Votto than some FA signee.
To get him signed like this with 2 years remaining was remarkable, and to me showed that he really didnt wanna go anywhere else.

IF he had two more very good years he would have been even more expensive.

ALot of money...yeah. and to be honest I am not looking at the financial viability of this team when he is in year 9-10 of the deal. If he can bring the Reds year in and year out competitiveness then I am all for it.

Yeah. That's the big worry I'd have about Prince. With his weight, I'd start to get really scared about that contract when he hits the other side of 30.

    Justin, couple questions for you

How can you eat at the machine room grill?? Any idea? I'll be home and going to the may 11th game. Think that'd be fun to go to.
Also, you still gonna try to grab me a magnetic schedule? You told me to remind you.

I don't really see fielding being an issue or really having any value in this contract. He's getting the cash to hit. All I'm saying is the last 2,3, or even 5 years having to play/practice in the field will wear on him, regardless of his conditioning. That's what will lead to the downfall in hitting, just like Rolen and most others. Win a ring in the next 5-7yrs and it's worth it, that's really all there is to it.

The machine room grille is open to the public. It's overpriced though just like concessions, I'd suggest going to one of the newer places outside the ballpark. If you really want to go in there just grab a beer.

Ok well what's new outside the park. It'll be my first trip home to a reds game in 3 years.
