The Reds can afford Phillips, but not on a long-term deal. If he's willing to take a 2-year deal and give a slight discount, maybe 2 years, 21M or something, keep him. If not, he's going to walk. He's not worth more, especially not more years...

Votto signing a long-term contract = six to midnight. Barring injury Votto would likely be the Reds greatest hitter of all-time when he retires.

I can see him playing lights out to get a big contract somewhere else or he could go the cancer route. Either way is possible.

I wouldnt throw a ton of money at BP. Gotta be smart and offer a good, solid fair deal. If he doesnt like it.......let me play with a chip on his shoulder all season to get a big time FA deal elsewhere.

That is a massive deal for Votto. No home town discount at all, as the Reds paid full market price and more.

While he is a great player, I don't think he is ever going to be more than a 30/100 guy on average (some years better than others) and that is just a lot of money for a guy who isn't a 40/130 guy like a Pujols/Arod/Fielder were in their monster years.

This is the 4th largest deal in MLB history, with only Arod/Pujols ever getting more (A-rod twice).

I applaud the Reds for having a brass pair like that to pay the guy, but I just think he could have been had for about $30-40 million less since so many teams have already tied up their first baseman for similar deals. Outside of the Cubs, I am not sure who else would have been able to pay him for than 160-170 million since the big markets were all set for the next decade at the position.

Lets hope this one turns out better than the Griffey deal. I really hope they get off to a fast start and the fans fill up the stadium by late May. Then maybe they can resign BP.

I don't worry about Votto's career taking the Griffey path. Griffey's knees were pretty much shot after a decade of playing on the turf in Seattle and he also wasn't big on conditioning. Votto is playing at a low impact position, has the body type to sustain a long career, and has an unbelievable work ethic.

So would the Dodgers. He was going to get 200+ from someone.

I would currently take Votto over Arod, Pujols, and Fielder and their respective current contracts. It was a move the Reds had to make.
