Super Bowl XLVI - New England Patriots vs. New York Giants

The Giants, Eagles, and Cowboys all underachieved this season (edit: obviously I mean in the regular season). Those were all 10 win teams talent-wise in my opinion.

I don't understand people who equate team success to QB talent. Alex Smith isn't a top 10 QB, but San Fran made the NFC title game. I also don't understand people who discount the regular season. If we're going by playoff success, than do you all agree that Mark Sanchez is a top 10 QB in the NFL?

Great QBs help to make great teams. They don't make them on their own. Eli being clutch in the postseason doesn't make him a great QB anymore than Tebow being clutch for 5 minutes a game for 8 weeks this season makes him one.

Eli isn't considered elite just because the Giants have won 2 Super Bowls, he's considered elite because he has been instrumental in their wins with game winning drives and because when it's time to play in the 4th quarter he has stepped up time and time again. Peyton had a shot at a game winning drive in a Super Bowl and know what he did? Pick 6. Eli hasn't done it on his own, but he does have a lot to do with them getting 2 rings.

And the whole point of playing is to win championships right? Do you want players who are great when the stakes are low but not when they're high, or players that step up when it's time to win? LeBron is the most talented player to probably ever play in the NBA, but unless he gets multiple rings and displays the desire to be great when it matters I'll take Kobe and MJ and plenty of other players over him regardless of how great he is in the regular season. Not the best direct comparison, but how you do in the playoffs means far more to me than regular season.

They were also banged up all season, hence the 9-7 record. Once they got healthy late in the season they started rolling

Lol at Vick being better than Eli. Or Romo for that matter. WTF. You see some wild shit on this site but that is up there.

So effin pi$$ed, back in august I kept telling my boy I was gonna put a 20 spot on the G-MEN at 20/1 odds to win it and I never got around to it. Kickin myself tonight. Ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

Also, didn't they lose 2-3 defensive starters for the season early in the season that they needed to learn to do well without?

They were still the 27th ranked defense that is hardly the best in the NFC.

What defense, right now, would you take over the Giants' D?

    Their D-line is historically good

And they struggled until they got them back

Down the stretch they shut down Atlanta, GB, San Francisco and New England.

They're not better than the Saints lineup currently and they're nowhere near the 2000's Colts receivers, the Rams with the Greatest Show on Turf, the Vikings with Carter and Moss, the 07 Bengals with Ocho and Housh were unstoppable, and definitely behind what Green Bay has this year
Well ya just lost all credibility w/ the Ocho and Housh reference...you should be shot for that.

Who is THAT great on the Saints? They have Drew fuckin Brees throwing to them, of course they're gonna look good. Just look at Sproles, in SD he was decent, sure, but soon as he had Drew Brees throwing to him he was pro bowl snub good...you think he just switched overnight?

How are those Colts receivers doing w/out Peyton?

Rams and Vikings had some great WRs, as did other teams...hence why I said one of the best, not the best.

Ocho and Housh dominated in 2007. 20 TD's and 2500 yards receiving and they had Carson Palmer throwing lol. And not the good version either

Not to interject into the whole "Eli's blah and lucky" deal, but you do realize that his top receiver this year was a second-year FCS nobody who happened to become a touchdown dancing superstar this year with Eli throwing to him, don't you? I mean, if you're going to play the "wide receivers made him" card, you should realize the possibility that it could be the other way around, right?

It's a fair point. And I'm not saying Eli just got lucky, my whole point is he's not elite. He's not Brady. He's not Rodgers. He's not Brees. He's in the next tier.

But Victor Cruz is really fucking good though lol

Oh, I agree with that. I think him and Big Ben are on the exact same tier. They both have two SBs, they both have had great talent to throw to and they both have alternated between being amazingly clutch and having WTF R U DOING?!?!?! moments from week to week...if not play by play. You don't look at them as being that "any given Sunday, my money is on them" guy, but more often than not, when it's clutch, they find a way.

Mulva;1076453 wrote:Take the clock and don't even give them a chance. What is the average NFL PAT conversion %? Because they were a yard closer than that.
I would agree with you if it was a first down run. It was second down. If Bradshaw falls at the one the Patriots would certainly call timeout. Normally in game winning situations you like to kick the ball on third down in case there is a botched snap/hold on the first attempt. It would be interesting to see what the Giants would have done, if they elect to kneel and run off 40 it gives them ONE chance for the game winning FG. If Coughlin decides to kick it on third it gives the Pats the ball with about 50 seconds left without a time-out, but all they need is a FG. At least with a TD, the Pats had to score a TD as well, even with a time-out it is very difficult to do in under a minute.

If Bradshaw falls and the Giants botch the FG or allow too much time for the Pats to kick a FG, it would have been the biggest goat show in Super Bowl history.
